Southampton came away from their first pre-season friendly with a victory over National League side Eastleigh but it was far from convincing.
This time last year Saints thrashed the Spitfires 7-1 but on this occasion they had to come from behind, eventually winning 2-1 in sweltering conditions.
Will Still fielded two different XIs in his first game as boss, one for each half with the side after the break offering much more reason for optimism.
Eastleigh took a surprise lead inside two minutes, Kieron Evans firing into the roof of the net from close range.
Just before the end of the first half, Saints won a penalty after a trip just inside the box which Adam Armstrong calmly slotted home.
The real quality came in the second half as youngsters Jay Robinson and Sam Edozie offered pace and directness in the wide areas.
Academy product Robinson was able to find a moment and make the difference as he dinked the ball through for Cameron Archer to chase and smash home.
Throughout the second half Tyler Dibling and Flynn Downes also showed moments of class, moving the ball around with pace and flair.
Still's side dominated the ball throughout the game and in the second half were able to create many more chances to score.
Saints will next travel to Spain and play a pre-season match behind closed doors against RCD Espanyol before a game against Brighton at St Mary's.
