Luton Town have "no chance" of being relegated because of the quality of their squad, according to Alfie Doughty.

The wing-back was pushed further forward and scored in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, a result which ended a run of 11 successive defeats away from home for the Hatters.

However, they remain next to bottom of the Championship table, and their next two games are against Sunderland and Sheffield United, who are currently fourth and second and pressing for automatic promotion.

"We're showing that aggression again that we did when we got promoted (in 2023). Once we get that back I don't think we've got anything to be worried about," Doughty told BBC Three Counties Radio.

Luton gave debuts to new signings Thelo Aasgaard, Millenic Alli and Josh Bowler at Hillsborough, the latter two from the bench, and Doughty believes all three will play a big part in the coming weeks.

"I think we've got no chance of going down, we've got a really good squad here. The signings that we've made, they came on and made a really big impact so I'm looking forward to it and I think everyone else is as well," he said.

Doughty has made 16 appearances this season, but has missed games because of an ankle problem, and his goal - fired home from 25 yards with his left foot - was his first since scoring in the final game of last season's Premier League campaign, a 4-2 home defeat by Fulham.

"I don't find myself in those positions (often), so it's quite unusual really. I haven't played left wing in years. I like shooting and luckily it came off," the 25-year-old said.

"I've played my whole career at left-wing back really so for me to be there, I love it. I want to help the team as much as I can and to be there with a goal, I'd like to stay there, but wherever the gaffer plays me, the gaffer plays me."

He continued: "Injuries happen. I'll kick on from this and I'm going to try and play as many games as I can for the rest of the season."

Luton do not have a game next weekend as they were beaten in the FA Cup third round by Nottingham Forest, with the trip to Sunderland on 12 February.

"It's time to rest, recover and really focus on what we need to do for the rest of the season," Doughty added.

"We're going in the right direction, we know what we're doing now and we've got to trust him [boss Matt Bloomfield] and trust ourselves."
