Paul Wotton's side lost out in last season's National League South play-off semi-finals

Torquay United boss Paul Wotton says the 6-0 friendly thrashing by Plymouth Argyle is a "brilliant learning curve" for his side.

The Gulls were only 1-0 behind at half-time in their pre-season game against their League One neighbours before struggling after the break.

But Wotton, whose side only missed out on last season's National League South title on goal difference, says there were positives to take from the defeat.

"First half for me I thought we were great - we've had good minutes in the legs playing against a team who were in the Championship last year and who have got players they've paid a lot of money for who are excellent," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"We've got work to do. I hate what I'm going to say now, but we won't face a team as good as that all season, nowhere near as good as that.

"First half for large periods it was great, second half the manner of the goals we conceded were poor and there's lots and lots to work on.

"It's not about being down, no one likes getting beat 6-0, but I think it's a brilliant learning curve for us."
