Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell says he wants to "achieve something that's never been done" at the club after signing a new contract.

The former Scotland, Wigan Athletic and Celtic defender, who first joined the club in October 2022, agreed a new undisclosed-length deal on Thursday.

He has guided Exeter to 14th and 13th-placed finishes in League One in his two seasons at St James Park.

"We always want to make progress, which we've done," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"We want to keep doing that and doing the same year on year - making progress - to hopefully achieve something that's never been done at this football club before, which would be really special.

"That's going to take time, and I'm committing myself to that project and the club is committing to me, which is great."

The 42-year-old led Wigan to promotion to the Championship in 2016 and has also had spells in charge of Partick Thistle and Chesterfield.

He took over from Matt Taylor, who left to take charge of Rotherham United having guided the Grecians to promotion from League Two in 2022.

"I love it here," Caldwell said.

"I've been here nearly two years now, it's the longest time I've been a manager at any football club.

"I think the way this club is run is unbelievable.

"The supporters have owned it for over 20 years now, the board take real care of that money and spend it wisely, not just on the team but on other aspects of the football club - the training ground, the stadium.

"The way they want to push the whole club forward is exceptional for me and I'm a small part of that."
