Tranmere Rovers have signed defender Aaron McGowan on a short-term contract until January.

McGowan was a free agent after leaving Northampton Town at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old was offered a new two-year contract to remain at Sixfields but wanted to move back to Liverpool to be closer to his wife and new baby.

McGowan made 131 appearances for the Cobblers across four seasons having moved from Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

"We believe Aaron's attributes will strengthen our options and contribute positively to the club both on and off the field," said, external Tranmere manager Andy Crosby.
