Millwall defender Kamarl Grant will spend at least the opening half of the season with the first team after signing a new contract with the club this summer, says head coach Alex Neil.

Grant spent the whole of last season and the last three months of the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Bromley, making 57 appearances for the Ravens.

The 22-year-old played the entire 180 minutes of the National League promotion final as Bromley beat Solihull Moors on penalties to reach the English Football League for the first time, before making 40 appearances in League Two last season.

He was rewarded with a new "long-term" contract last month and made his Millwall debut in the club's Carabao Cup victory over Newport County on 12 August.

"Kamarl we'd like to keep in the building this year, certainly for the first half of the year in particular," Neil told BBC Radio London.

"He got his debut against Newport, we're hopeful that there will be some opportunities beyond that for him to come in and stake a claim and play."

Neil said he was keen for Grant to now get accustomed to life in the Championship and how he wants his Millwall side to play, rather than going out on another loan.

Alex Neil says there are "question marks" around the fitness of a couple of players ahead of Millwall's trip to Sheffield United

"It's always good for players to play but he's played quite a lot of games and we just want to get him prepared and ready for the level we're at rather than playing lower levels," he said.

Millwall begun the new Championship season with victory at Norwich City before a 3-0 defeat at home by Middlesbrough.

They travel to Sheffield United on Saturday with the Blades still looking for their first points of the season after defeats against Bristol City and Swansea City.

"We've got a couple of question marks over a couple of players for the weekend but as far as the preparation work and aiming towards Sheffield United's concerned, all that aspect's been fine," Neil said.

He also revealed left-back Joe Bryan is back in training after a spell on the sidelines since mid-July.

"Yeah he's going fine. He's in training, he's done a couple of days. But it's only been a couple of days for Joe and he's been out for a significant period so he's certainly not ready at the moment," Neil added.
