Rotherham United have signed midfielder Kian Spence on a two-year deal from League Two side Barrow.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder came through Middlesbrough's academy and had spells with Scarborough and Halifax Town before joining Barrow.

Spence scored 14 goals in two seasons at Holker Street but has chosen to move on after his contract expired.

He becomes the first acquisition for new manager Matt Hamshaw, who said the midfielder was an "exciting" addition to his squad.

"We have been tracking Kian over the last few years and are really excited by him," Hamshaw told the club website, external.

"He covers a lot of ground and I'm really glad that we have been able to get it over the line.

"He is a versatile midfielder and has a great strike from distance. He wears his heart on his sleeve, gives everything that he has got, but also has that touch of quality."
