Plymouth Argyle manager Tom Cleverley has said the club are looking to sign a midfielder before the window closes.

Despite 13 arrivals through the Home Park doors this summer, Cleverley says adding another midfielder is a top priority before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

"We'll be looking at loans coming down the pyramid and things like that. We'll have our finger on the pulse for sure," Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon ahead of Tuesday's EFL Cup second-round tie against Swansea City.

"I think the priority will be a midfielder, knowing that (we're) playing Caleb Watts in midfield when he's really a number 10.

"We're really stretching our midfield to go again so it's a priority position that we bring the right player in from now to the end of the window, as well as keeping our fingers on the pulse and hopefully no outgoings."

Cleverley, 36, was appointed in June on a three-year deal as Pilgrims boss following Miron Muslic's move to German club Schalke, and is tasked with returning Argyle to the Championship as well stabilising a club that has appointed five permanent managers in just 18 months.

It was not the rosy start as the ex-Manchester United player would have hoped, losing the four opening games of the League One season but he led his side to a first league win when they beat Blackpool on Saturday and said their performance shows that progress is being made both on and off the pitch.

"I never once lost belief in the process and that we will eventually get things right," he said.

"Two centre halves, our number nine, and a big potential academy product tied (Tegan Finn) to a new contract."

"It's been a really significant week for the football club. The three points were the most significant for me personally, but all of those things are hugely important that we got done."
