Rotherham boss Steve Evans has said he understands the fans' frustration as they look to end their near two-year wait for an away win.

The Millers were one of the pre-season promotion favourites but have made a poor start to the season with just one victory from their opening seven League One games.

Evans, who led the club to two promotions during his previous spell in charge, returned in April after their relegation from the Championship was confirmed.

"The league table never lies, whether that's after two games, 10 games or 20. We're disappointed with where we are," he told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"I expect negativity but we're in a situation here where the club has done nothing but lose matches for two years.

"The first thing you need to do is stop the wheel. You can't just suddenly reverse it, you need to stop it and we have done. But it's more difficult to get winning matches.

"That'll come, our performances and our positive play have been good. My job is to make sure we keep confidence in the camp."

Rotherham last won away from home in the league when they beat Sheffield United in November 2022, 39 matches ago.

They visit Shrewsbury on Saturday before travelling to Cambridge on Tuesday, the teams who are 23rd and 24th respectively in the table.

Evans said he and the team will be "doing everything" to put an end to their barren run on the road.

"I'm not used to Millers fans booing and not being happy but my job is to get in the trenches and fight," he added.

"We know how tough these next four days are going to be but they are great incentives to get a two-year statistic off our back.

"The supporters pay their hard-earned money to get in the car or coach or train to come and support us. To go two whole years without winning a match away from home is pretty hard to take.

"I can't promise that it will happen on Saturday or Tuesday but we will be doing everything to make it happen. We're humble enough to know what that will mean to them."
