Port Vale manager Darren Moore says his side will continue to learn lessons and develop after securing their first league win of the season.

A goal at the start and end of the first half, from Ruari Paton and Devante Cole respectively, put Vale on their way to a 2-0 victory at Exeter in the club's eighth League One match of the season.

The result ended a run of four defeats in a row and lifted Moore's team out of the relegation zone in the early-season table.

"The main thing was to get the clean sheet and stop the rot," Moore told BBC Radio Stoke.

"We set up for it and knew that if we kept the back door shut we would score.

"I'm chuffed with the clean sheet, I must say."

Camaraderie and togetherness 'second to none'

Vale's first three points of the campaign came after some near misses.

They led Stevenage 1-0 with two minutes to go before conceding twice to lose 2-1 in their fifth game of the season.

Prior to their trip to St James Park, they led Leyton Orient, then came back to equalise at 2-2 before losing in the last minute.

But against Exeter, Vale held on to their lead to deliver a timely morale boost to the camp.

"Last week after the [Leyton Orient] game, we spoke about the psychology of the game and where it was at," Moore added.

"For me, waking up Sunday morning, my focus was on the Exeter game and I suppose I get to get rid of the game the week before because I'm working on another one.

"My job is now to work on the Mansfield game and learn from what we did last week and against Exeter."

Moore, who has seen his side produce impressive victories at Blackpool and Championship Birmingham in the Carabao Cup, said his squad's fortitude in their difficult start to the League One season has never wavered.

"I have to give credit to the group again. The atmosphere, camaraderie and togetherness has been second to none," Moore said.

"A lot of people have been asking about that. But from the start of the season we've not been too far away.

"We've had some good wins in the cup competitions but then stuttered in the league but we need to learn from this win and take it into the Mansfield game."
