In-form Hibernian beat Championship leaders Ayr United on Friday to become the first side in the hat for the Scottish Cup quarter-finals.

Five of the seven remaining last-16 ties also pit a Premiership side against a team from the division below.

Scott Brown's Ayr held their own against top-flight opposition despite the end result, and recent form will have given other teams from the second tier a lift going into the weekend...

Shaky Dundee face Diamonds test

Airdrieonians may be stranded at the foot of the table but they have won both league matches since banging five past Dumbarton in the fourth round of the cup, which is their best sequence of results this term.

The Diamonds shipped six goals at Dens Park in the League Cup in August and on their last Scottish Cup visit in 2022, but Dundee have been hit for six themselves in their past two outings against Heart of Midlothian and Celtic.

This is something of a free-hit for Airdrie, who were hammered by a horrendous injury list in the first half of the season, while Tony Docherty will be looking for a response from his players after a couple of shaky defensive displays.

Out-of-form Dons ripe for shock?

Dunfermline were victims of Airdrie's recent resurgence but they responded with a good derby win over Raith Rovers before tumbling out of the SPFL Trust Trophy at the semi-final stage.

New head coach Michael Tidser was well backed in the winter transfer window but the Pars' best hope on Sunday probably rests on just how atrocious hosts Aberdeen have been of late.

The Dons' dip has been astonishing, going 14 without a win in the Premiership and scoring once in their past eight league outings.

Jimmy Thelin delivered some harsh home truths last weekend and seems happy with how further talks with his players have gone, but the atmosphere at Pittodrie will be anxious and angsty if Aberdeen continue to mis-fire.

Hamilton may have been hoping to pray on frayed nerves at St Johnstone but Accies have lost three in a row without scoring, while the Premiership's bottom side have won three in a row.

More than pay day for Old Firm opponents?

Queen's Park and Raith Rovers go up against the Old Firm and both are away from home, so it may be a question of 'take the money and run', hoping that the scorelines can be kept respectable.

Celtic will have one eye on Bayern Munich in the Champions League play-offs and Rovers can take heart from the fight Falkirk put up against Brendan Rodgers' B team in the League Cup before Nicolas Kuhn came on to terrorise them.

The Kirkcaldy side also have very special League Cup final memories against Celtic - although that was more than 30 years ago now and Rodgers has a Scottish Cup record of played 18, won 18.

It's more than 50 years since Queen's Park visited Ibrox in this tournament and Rangers scored eight that day.

Manchester United are the only team to have beaten Rangers in 2025.

With just one win in their past seven Championship games, the Spiders seem unlikely to be the first Scottish side to leave Ibrox celebrating a victory this season, even if manager Callum Davidson has worked cup miracles before.
