Plymouth Argyle defender Julio Pleguezuelo says he has been impressed with new head coach Wayne Rooney.

The Pilgrims are currently in Spain on a pre-season training camp.

They play their first match under the former England captain's guidance on Friday in a friendly against South African side Orlando Pirates.

"The atmosphere has been really good in this first week. He looks hungry to achieve," the Spanish defender told BBC Radio Devon.

"For me and for all of us it's going to be a very exciting season."

Argyle's first competitive match under Rooney - who was appointed in May after being sacked by Birmingham City in January - is at Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday, 11 August.

The Pilgrims go into their second season back in the Championship hoping to improve on a first season which saw them avoid relegation on the final day.

Argyle had been safely in mid-table, but after Steven Schumacher left the club in December to join Stoke City his replacement Ian Foster struggled to get results and lost his job at the start of April.

Plymouth survived after three wins and a draw in their final seven games under the caretaker leadership of director of football Neil Dewsnip and coach Kevin Nancekivell.

The club are now looking to build under Rooney, who is now in his fourth job after spells at Blues, Derby County and American side DC United.

"There's been plenty of running, but even from the first day he brought the balls out so we've been doing loads of ball work," Pleguezuelo added.

"That's the kind of football he wants to play, so it's really nice.

"It'll be the first test for us to see the stuff that we've been working on and put it into practise.

"The whole season is going to be very exciting for all of us."
