Exeter City forward Sonny Cox could be out for two months after suffering a groin injury.

The 20-year-old came off 24 minutes into Exeter's 2-1 loss at Stevenage.

Cox has scored once in 11 appearances in all competitions this season.

"He had a scan and has seen a specialist. The good news is that he doesn't need an operation. It was on the better side of what it could have been," Exeter City manager Gary Caldwell told BBC Radio Devon.

"I think you could see straight away as soon as he went down that a sub was needed because of the way he went down."

Caldwell said he will particularly miss the versatility the homegrown player has shown for him this season, and Cox's absence comes with loan signing Carlos Mendes Gomes ruled out until Christmas.

"He [Cox] has played in different positions for the team and he's done extremely well in terms of being a good team player and doing his bit in unfamiliar positions," Caldwell added.

"I feel gutted for him because he had played consecutively for a few games and was getting minutes, and it was about building those minutes and progressing.

"But that's football. These things happen, and he's a player that has had injuries before. He's a player that is strong and hopefully will come back quick."
