Simply still too early to be calling it. Depending on how any one match week goes, everyone currently keeps flipping between ‘Arsenal will run away with it’ and ‘are back in title race’. These December fixtures could well be a good indicator though.

Arsenal v Brentford (Weds, 19.30 GMT)

    Arsenal

Arsenal have not lost a game in all competitions since August 31. However, they have dropped points in two of their last three Premier League games.

It shakes out with the Gunners currently five points clear of second-placed Manchester City heading into the latest round of fixtures.

If City beat Fulham tonight, the gap is down to two and the pressure is on before Arsenal host Brentford on Wednesday night.

Opta remain confident Arsenal will see this through however, giving them a 78.69% chance of winning the league in their latest predictions.

They say Man City only have an 11.43% chance. Indeed, the stats gurus predict that Arsenal will finish 11 points ahead of the Citizens.

But when are titles ever won on a spreadsheet?

That's all from Arne Slot - let's now turn our attentions to Mikel Arteta.

The title race is still tight. Teams like Liverpool are nine points behind but there are still many matches where points can be gained and lost. We can’t count them out yet - and Arsenal have a tendency to lose points at crucial times.

Too soon to talk about Liverpool getting back into the title race, especially with how other teams are playing. Top four is both achievable and expected, though.

  9. What does life without Salah look like for Liverpool?published at 09:50 GMT

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

    Aadam Patel
    BBC Sport Liverpool reporter

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has confirmed Mo Salah will depart for AFCON on December 15, which means his last game is expected to be on 13 December against Brighton.

If Egypt go all the way to the final, then Salah won’t return to Merseyside until January 19 at the earliest. That would mean missing seven games, including the match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on 8 January.

Slot refused to say whether he would leave Salah out over the next fortnight, but the Dutchman admitted that Salah was disappointed after he was left on the bench on Sunday.

Liverpool have lost their last two games at home and Sunderland will be licking their lips at the prospect of winning at Anfield in the league for the first time since 1983.

Regis Le Bris’ side will go into Wednesday’s game ahead of Liverpool in the table and Slot is aware of how tough a test the Black Cats will pose.

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

    Liverpool

It's promoted sides Sunderland and Leeds this week for Liverpool, with matches against Brighton and Tottenham to follow in the Premier League before Christmas.

This time next week, they'll be preparing to get back to winning ways in the Campions League against Inter Milan, after their heavy loss to PSV left them 13th in that competition.

They also host strugglers Wolves in their final game of 2025, another match they will expect to win.

Liverpool picked up an important win on Sunday, but I still don't see the defending champions getting back in the title race now.

Instead, their aim is probably the Champions League places, which is something they should have enough for with the ability in their squad.

It was an important three points because Arne Slot was under pressure and he made a big call to leave Mohamed Salah out, but it worked out for him.

It was huge for Alexander Isak to score his first Premier League goal for Liverpool too. He's had to wait longer than he would have wanted for it, and the Liverpool fans have had to wait as well.

  12. Isak up and running in leaguepublished at 09:42 GMT

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

Another positive for Liverpool, beyond the result on Sunday, was Alexander Isak getting his name on the scoresheet.

The club record £125m signing scored his first Premier League goal in eight appearances, ending his joint-longest scoring drought in the competition (also seven games from April-May 2023).

Speaking on Match of the Day, pundit Alan Shearer said Isak is showing positive signs - but still needs to work on his connection with his Liverpool team-mates.

  13. Reds aim for back-to-back winspublished at 09:40 GMT

Yet, despite their struggles - and they have struggled - the Champions League positions are only three points away. Even second-placed Manchester City are only four points better off.

Do you think that should be the target now, Liverpool fans? Or do you believe the title is still there to be won?

From six defeats in their past seven Premier League games prior to facing West Ham, I'm sure most supporters will just be hoping it's back-to-back wins after tomorrow.

They haven't won consecutive league games since beating Everton on 20 September.

  14. Will Salah return?published at 09:37 GMT

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

The headline team news for Liverpool on Sunday was the dropping of Mohamed Salah.

The form of the club's third-highest ever scorer has been among the team's major concerns this season

Dominik Szobozslai took up much of the Salah role on Liverpool's right side, and notably struck a better balance between going forward and defensive work. His heatmap, on the left below, shows work either side of the halfway line.

Compare that with Salah's heatmap in defeats against Nottingham Forest and Brentford [central and right] highlight the time he spends positioned high up the pitch.

Arne Slot played down dropping Salah and referenced he may well start against Sunderland on Wednesday. But greater balance to Liverpool's right flank, which has been targeted by opponents, may prove key to stabilising this season.

Szobozslai's heat map at West Ham can be seen on the left. Salah's heatmap against Nottingham Forest can be seen in the centre, with his heatmap at Brentford on the right.
  15. Salah is 'just another player'published at 09:35 GMT

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Football Daily

Not a problem at all. I think Liverpool have been on such a bad run and Mo Salah's been an incredible player for Liverpool over the years but he’s just another player and he should be treated no differently.

And if he’s out of form, which he has been and is no where near the level he has been in recent seasons then he should be dropped and have to work his way back into the team.

  16. 'He would have taken that personally'published at 09:32 GMT

    Andros Townsend
Former Tottenham midfielder on Monday Night Club

I think [Mo] Salah would have taken that [being benched] personally. The best players in the world want to be playing every minute of every game. They have an ego and they don’t like not being deemed good enough to play in those games. He would have taken that personally.

  17. Can Liverpool begin turning corner?published at 09:30 GMT

    Liverpool v Sunderland (20:15 GMT)

Defending Premier League champions Liverpool will kick-off tomorrow in eighth place, nine points adrift of leaders Arsenal after 13 games.

They had lost their past three matches in a row in all competitions before Sunday's victory over West Ham - conceding 10 goals against Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and PSV - as their dreadful run of form continued.

Sunderland, who have made an excellent start on their top-flight return, are two places and one point above.

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

    Andros Townsend
Former Tottenham midfielder on Monday Night Club

As a player, looking into a player’s mindset, he [Mo Salah] wouldn’t be thinking that he is the problem. No player thinks they’re the problem. He’d be saying this is how many goals I scored last season, maybe it’s xyz who you have brought in who hasn’t delivered, hasn’t given me the ball, or the service instead of my performance.

Salah will be knocking on that door saying why am I not playing, I was the main man last season, I should be playing and another player should be on the bench

  19. Slot has to make a decision in the 'best interest of the team'published at 09:25 GMT

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on Monday Night Club

Arne Slot will bring out some footage of [Mo] Salah from this season and some of his horrendous misses and say that’s why you’re not in the team.

Slot would have thought long and hard about it, but it gets to such a point when the manager feels he’s under severe pressure and he has to make a decision in the best interest of the team.

He needs to win a game of football, and if he thinks leaving Mo Salah out is the best thing to do because he needs greater return in forward areas, he needs to win a game. It’s going to be fascinating because of the old saying you can’t change a winning team.

  20. Slot hopes Bradley back for Leedspublished at 09:22 GMT

Liverpool v Sunderland (Weds, 20:15 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on when defenders Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong will return from injury: "Connor got into a training session yesterday for the first time. He is not 100% yet, so we need to manage it a bit so don't get your hopes up too soon.

"We expect the same with Jeremie next week. So the two of the come back while we play a lot of games.

"I hope [Bradley] will be available for Leeds."
