It’s the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round this weekend – the final stage of the competition before EFL clubs enter – and BBC Sport’s live streaming game pits 8th tier Hednesford Town against National League side and current FA Trophy holders, Gateshead.

The Staffordshire club are playing at this stage for the first time in five years, and are one of only four clubs that remain having entered at the Extra-Preliminary Round. Their cup campaign began on 3rd August, and including replays, the Pitmen have already played seven ties.

The game against Gateshead will be played at Town’s impressive 6000 capacity Keys Park stadium, a legacy of their spell in the higher echelons of non-league – the club played in the then Conference between 1995 and 2001. The same period saw them achieve an historic best FA Cup run, with upset victories over Blackpool and York seeing them through to the 4th Round Proper and a trip to Middlesbrough in 1997.

In recent years Hednesford have unfortunately slipped down the pyramid. They were relegated from National League North in 2016 and in 2023 dropped down to Division One West of the Northern Premier League. Indeed, things were almost a great deal worse when a deal to buy the club fell through in May 2023, putting their entire existence in jeopardy, and they temporarily resigned from the league.

Now under new ownership, things are looking up, but they’ll need to be at their very best to have a chance against Gateshead who currently lie 4th in the National League table, some 80 places above Town in the pyramid. However, the visitors suffered a blow last week when their management team led by former Newcastle goalkeeper, Rob Elliot, departed to take up the reins at League One side Crawley. Last season, Elliot guided “The Heed” to a top six finish and that Trophy success at Wembley.
