United have signed the 4th and 6th best statistically performing players in the entire Premier League last season in Mbuemo and Cunha, (as per Whoscored) and they both solve glaring issues in the side. Hard to say anyone has done better really.

    • United's first bid for Mbeumo in June was a £45m offer, with up to £10m in add-ons.
    • That was rejected with United making a second bid a few weeks later of more than £60m.
    • It was third time lucky for Man Utd as their bid of £65m with £6m in add-ons, was accepted last Thursday.
    • The deal finally got confirmed yesterday, with Mbeumo signing a five-year contract, with the option of another year.

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter in Chicago

Manchester United new-boy Bryan Mbeumo has spoken to club media following his £65m arrival from Brentford.

In it, he explains why he enjoys playing the piano and his new found love for chess.

"I am just a normal guy," he said. "I like piano and chess.

"I really discovered it (piano) a few years ago, a friend was playing and I wanted to try.

"With chess, I played a little bit when I was younger but two or three years ago, I started playing again and I really enjoyed it.

"I play online. I have a board at home but I have no-one to play with."

Best transfer window has got to be Chelsea 04/05 (Robben, Drogba, Cech, Carvalho) or City 10/11 (Yaya, Balotelli, David Silva, Kolarov, Boateng) - these windows set these clubs up to compete with the best ever since then.

  6. Survival a tall order for Leeds?published at 12:41 British Summer Time

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Anton Stach is Leeds’ sixth signing of the summer, four of whom are 6ft 1in or taller, with head coach Daniel Farke clearly keen to add height and physicality to the squad which won promotion from the Championship last season.

Stach, who moves to Elland Road for £17m, certainly fits the bill, having been one of the Bundesliga’s most effective ball-winners in recent years. In the past two seasons he has registered 120 interceptions, more than any other player in the German top flight, and won possession 393 times, which is the league’s third highest tally. He also ranks fourth for tackles attempted and duels won.

His versatility should also be an asset for Leeds. Though used primarily as a holding midfielder by Hoffenheim, Stach began 2024-25 at centre-back, only switching to a more advanced role in November following the appointment of Christian Ilzer as head coach.

At 6ft 4in tall, Stach is an effective aerial presence in both boxes. With Leeds also recruiting Jaka Bijol and Sebastian Bornauw – both of whom are 6ft 3in – plus 6ft 1in Lukas Nmecha, the Yorkshire club will hope to gain a competitive edge next season when it comes to all-important set-pieces.

Spurs fan here. Looking at both the signings, the momentum, and the squad depth, it's Liverpool's title to lose. I genuinely can't see anyone else getting within 10 points on the final day. If I had to gamble, it would be Chelsea (and that hurts to say).

If Liverpool secure Ekitike, which looks all but done, and Rodrygo, which look a possibility, it could potentially be the greatest transfer window by any club in the history of the Premier League.

The striker will complete a medical upon his arrival in England before flying out to meet the rest of his new teammates in Hong Kong.

I’m worried by Newcastle’s recruitment. Yes we want quality but we also need numbers. If you flog your stars across all competitions you risk injuries which helps nobody. Even if not ‘first XI,’ we need to increase the depth our squad to give the bigger names a much needed rest.

  12. 'It's now up to Rashford to prove the doubters wrong'published at 11:54 British Summer Time

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Football writer, Henry Winter reflects on Marcus Rashford's loan move to football giants, Barcelona:

"It's sad but I think it suits all parties," said Winter.

    "It's sad because you've got a player who's 15th, in Manchester United's all-time scoring list,138 goals in 426 games so there's clearly a talent there.

"But his career clearly has been drifting. He is the target, the magnet for a fair bit of criticism almost sort of scapegoated for the broader issues going on at Manchester United

"He also doesn't fit in with Amorim's tactical 3-4-2-1, he's more of a flying winger who's best coming in on the left. .

"So, I think it suits all parties and he'll be breathing a sigh of relief.

"He's got to cease this opportunity. He could fly at Barcelona but obviously they've got Raphina on the left wing who's had a brilliant season. So he's not going to walk into the starting team, as they've got some exceptional attackers.

"But what has been significant that has been raised at the BBC, that his deal is an 'option' to buy not 'obligation' to buy.

"Whether that's because Barcelona have still got some misgivings about Rashford and his consistency or whether it's actually good way of making sure he actually delivers in every game

"So, for Rashford it's a chance to play back in the Champions League at one of the top five clubs probably top two three clubs in the world but also there is a World Cup at the end of it and he needs to be delivering to grab that left wing spot for England.

"Tuchel rates him, Flick at Barcelona rates him, so it's now up to Rashford to prove the doubters wrong."

Tom, London (11:29) Arteta said "six, seven, eight" and suggested teams are getting stronger. I fail to see how that's an excuse, because on paper, he's right. Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Man Utd and Newcastle. Villa and Spurs might challenge, Forest were there till a late crash last season...

Struggling to get eight contenders that he's referring to. There's the obvious Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City. Then you've got Chelsea, maybe Newcastle. Very outside shot of Spurs and Man Utd. Sunderland or eight?

    Daniel, Derby

Did anyone manage to scramble together eight teams able to win the league? Or is it just another rambling excuse for Arteta's nearly men once again. Have more than three teams ever competed in a proper title charge?

If Newcastle hang on to Isak (and is looking more likely by the day) then I can see them having an outside chance of winning the league. They've got a manager who believes in the players and an excellent signing in Anthony Elanga.

Bayer Leverkusen are among the clubs monitoring Chelsea attacker Raheem Sterling.

The forward is attracting interest from a clutch of European sides with Leverkusen, according to sources close to the player, believed to be among the teams keeping abreast of developments over his future.

Sterling is not in Enzo Maresca’s plans and can leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 30-year-old has returned to Chelsea having spent last season on loan at Arsenal.
