You can imagine Daniel Farke's last words to his Leeds players before they left the dressing room.

    "Keep it tight lads."

A week of planning on the training ground went flying out of the window inside the opening 60 seconds.

It's a blow to concede early but Sunderland have started this game well.

    Bournemouth strike first!

A slip allows Antoine Semeyo space to pick out the run of Evanilson in the box with a stunning, low cross. The striker hits the post but the rebound falls to Amine Adli to slot home.

Right then, the first of the long throws comes from Michael Kayode. He absolutely launches it into the mixer and Mathias Jensen is hauled down.

Not enough in that for a penalty.

When I was walking over to the Etihad Stadium earlier Manchester City's Under-18s were part way through a 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest in their Premier League North fixture.

The way the men's first team have started suggests they have plenty of goals on their mind as well.

That Phil Foden goal went in before scores of supporters in front of me had even reached their seats.

Now it's Sunderland who come forward through Enzo Le Fee. He cuts it back for Chemsdine Talbi in the box but Bournemouth have enough bodies back.

One minute on the clock - 1-0 to Manchester City!

A lightning start for the home side thanks to Phil Foden's first time attempt from close range after great work down the wing by Matheus Nunes.

A disastrous start for Leeds and their under-pressure boss Daniel Farke.

This may well be Manchester City's worst start to a campaign for five years but Pep Guardiola has said that overall he is, "pleased with the season so far" and his "players are working hard to improve every day."

With six Premier League titles under his belt at City and numerous other trophies, is that a little bit of expectation management?

He might be supporting his boy at the Etihad this afternoon but, after he finished playing, Alfie Haaland used to occasionally turn up in the Elland Road kop (not the hospitality suites) with a Leeds scarf around his neck.

Whatever you do you're scrutinised. Pep gave people minutes [against Bayer Leverkusen], he believes in his squad but it was a disappointing performance and you can't ignore it.

But the best thing about the best teams is that they learn from mistakes really quickly and that's what they've got to do today - another big test and they can't afford to keep making these mistakes.

Burnley sat above Brentford on goal difference after five games of this season, but the gap between the teams is now six places and six points.

Scott Parker's side have slipped back into the relegation places after a hat-trick of defeats, and they could suffer four losses in a row for the first time since between February and March 2024 under Vincent Kompany.

The Clarets have mustered a total of 98 shots in 12 games this term and are the only side to attempt fewer than 100 efforts at goal.

Their current ratio of 8.2 shots per game is the lowest on record in a Premier League campaign, since Opta started recording that data in 1997-98, and history tells us that a season normally ends with relegation for teams who struggle to generate shooting opportunities.

  19. Will Man City end bad week with a win?published at 14:51 GMT

Man City v Leeds (15:00 GMT)

    .

Manchester City have had a bad week, with defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen. Boss Pep Guardiola made 10 changes for the Champions League game with Leverkusen which was a strange thing to do, and it backfired massively because now his team have got work to do to make the knockout stage automatically.

Before the international break, their recent form suggested they had turned the corner and were going to go on a run to really push leaders Arsenal.

Two defeats in a week in two different competitions tells a different story, though. Even so, I don't see City having any problems against Leeds.

  20. 'Worst start for five years'published at 14:48 GMT

Man City v Leeds (15:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

This is Manchester City's worst start to a season for five years and their second-worst under Pep Guardiola. City are third in the Premier League table with 22 points from 12 games, which is just a point fewer than they had at this stage last season.

Interestingly, City did win the title with just 20 points after 12 games in 2020-21, but there was arguably not a title rival like Arsenal to catch that season because Tottenham and Liverpool were at the top with just 25 points.

The most points they have had at this stage under Guardiola is 34 during the title-winning 2017-18 season.
