Will Erling Haaland reach 100 Premier League goals by scoring against his hometown club Leeds?

Burnley sat above Brentford on goal difference after five games of this season, but the gap between the teams is now six places and six points.

Scott Parker's side have slipped back into the relegation places after a hat-trick of defeats, and they could suffer four losses in a row for the first time since between February and March 2024 under Vincent Kompany.

The Clarets have mustered a total of 98 shots in 12 games this term and are the only side to attempt fewer than 100 efforts at goal.

Their current ratio of 8.2 shots per game is the lowest on record in a Premier League campaign, since Opta started recording that data in 1997-98, and history tells us that a season normally ends with relegation for teams who struggle to generate shooting opportunities.

Manchester City have had a bad week, with defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen. Boss Pep Guardiola made 10 changes for the Champions League game with Leverkusen which was a strange thing to do, and it backfired massively because now his team have got work to do to make the knockout stage automatically.

Before the international break, their recent form suggested they had turned the corner and were going to go on a run to really push leaders Arsenal.

Two defeats in a week in two different competitions tells a different story, though. Even so, I don't see City having any problems against Leeds.

Manchester City

This is Manchester City's worst start to a season for five years and their second-worst under Pep Guardiola. City are third in the Premier League table with 22 points from 12 games, which is just a point fewer than they had at this stage last season.

Interestingly, City did win the title with just 20 points after 12 games in 2020-21, but there was arguably not a title rival like Arsenal to catch that season because Tottenham and Liverpool were at the top with just 25 points.

The most points they have had at this stage under Guardiola is 34 during the title-winning 2017-18 season.

Bournemouth have won just five points from 18 available on the road in the Premier League so far this season – with their only victory at Tottenham – and head coach Andoni Iraola believes his team need to be "especially good" if they are going to triumph at Sunderland.

"We cannot see Sunderland like a promoted team," said the Spaniard. "I think they have shown they are a really good team and they have a lot of experience with players coming from big clubs. They know what they're doing and what it takes to win in the Premier League."

Brentford head into this weekend in the relative comfort of mid-table - five points clear of the relegation zone and five points below the top four.

Two defeats from their past three league outings doesn't look great on paper, but both losses came away from home and they only failed to snatch a point at Brighton last Saturday because top scorer Igor Thiago's 94th-minute penalty was saved with the Bees trailing 2-1.

The Brazilian scored his ninth top-flight goal of the season from the spot earlier in that match and only Erling Haaland, with 14 goals, has more in the division.

Thiago is vying to reach the 10-goal mark after just 13 matches and would become the quickest Brentford player to reach double figures in the division, beating Ivan Toney's previous record of 15 games set in 2022-23.

Alf-Inge Haaland, father of Erling, has turned up at the Etihad to support his son - and watch his two former clubs in action.

Haaland senior played for Leeds before moving to City in 2000.

Something has happened to Burnley over the past couple of weeks. We have turned into a very passive side with no real intent to win a game.

When we don't have the ball, we lack the intensity and drive to get in the opposition's faces and win the ball back. We just allow the play to continue and try to defend the attack that the other side are building.

Scott Parker is a naturally cautious manager. We know that, but he has to step out of his comfort zone and fire his players up - otherwise we're just waving the white flag and whimpering back down to the Championship. We have the talent, we just don't have the drive at the moment.

I ask Parker this question: what is your side's identity? What does the class of 2026 want to be known for? If you don't know the answer to that question, you have got work to do.

At the start of the season, did we think that Leeds would roll into the Premier League and cruise? No.

I suppose there are Leeds fans that are looking at Sunderland's success this season and are thinking: 'Why couldn't that have been us?'

That's the issue because Leeds haven't had a disastrous start to the Premier League. They have picked up 11 points from 12 games and they have been very competitive, but we are seeing how ruthless this league can be.

Manchester City

In the least surprising news of the day, it's tipping it down at the Etihad.

While welcoming Leeds United in his programme notes, the Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he hopes the visitors "can enjoy Manchester a little bit before returning home after the game."

I am presuming he means at the Christmas markets in the city centre, or something along those lines, because nothing less than three points will do for City this afternoon as they attempt to make up ground on Premier League leaders Arsenal, who are seven points better off.

Sunderland

Sunderland are without a win in three games but will finish the day in a Champions League spot if they defeat Bournemouth at the Stadium of Light.

Around this time four years ago they were playing Cambridge United in League One. Now the Black Cats are aiming to finish the day in the Premier League's top four.

What a job Regis Le Bris is doing.

Burnley

Burnley defender Kyle Walker on his team's survival chances: "They say you need 10 wins. We are on three. If we can turn some of those losses into draws, we are getting closer.

"I was very fortunate to win six Premier Leagues. Would Burnley staying up match the Champions League? Of course not. Would it match the third Premier League or something like that? Possibly on par. On par for different reasons. When people are doubting you so much in a town like Burnley, where they expect you to go down, if we survive this, it'll be a great achievement."

Leeds haven't had the creative edge that they need and they are relying too much on set pieces. Daniel Farke was under pressure before this season even started so you feel like his head was just above water and, since he has bobbed under it, it has been difficult for him to come up and get more air.
