Aston Villa's early-season troubles deepened as Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson recovered from a blunder to become the Bees' penalty shootout hero in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Iceland international Valdimarsson was crestfallen in the first half, after letting Harvey Elliott's weak shot squirm both through his hands and between his legs, but was mobbed by his team-mates at the end.

The 23-year-old saved the opening spot-kick from John McGinn low to his right and then denied Matty Cash, allowing Mikkel Damsgaard to settle the tie with Brentford's fourth successful penalty from four.

Valdimarsson also saved from Cash and Morgan Rogers late in normal time after a shaky opening 60 minutes.

Elliott's goal was Villa's first of the season - their first in more than eight hours of competitive football - but was not enough to seal their first win of the campaign, coming on the back of their winless start across four games in the Premier League.

That opener was gifted to them, after they had struggled to create in the first half, with Vitaly Janelt caught in possession playing out from the back - even before Valdimarsson's error allowed Elliott to mark his first Villa start with a goal.

Villa were then unable to deal with another Brentford long throw - after the one which earned them an injury-time draw with Chelsea on Saturday - in the 57th minute as Aaron Hickey swept in a fine volley to equalise.

It continues a sorry run in the League Cup - this the fourth time Villa have been knocked out in their opening game in the competition in the past five seasons - and will do little to lift the mood at Villa Park.

  3. 'We are improving'published at 22:40 BST 16 September

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: "We compete well. Some players needed to take time playing, getting confidence and getting fit. We scored a goal and drew but in the end we lost on penalty kicks. We are improving."

How did the new players do? "Good, good. I decided to use different players and try to adapt as soon as possible. They played well and we created more chances than the last matches. We were more or less controlling the game but we want to concede less corners. We did a complete match in 90 minutes and if we were more clinical we could win."

On Villa's form: "We have some new players and we have some issues getting balance in the squad and now we are progressing in the right way that I want."

  4. 'I think we can have a great season'published at 22:34 BST 16 September

    Brentford

Brentford manager Keith Andrews speaking to Sky Sports: "I am just delighted for the group really. A lot of players coming in and making debuts and Hakon was the hero after a testing night. I don't care about mistakes. It is about the intentions of the players on a day-to-day basis.

"After the first 10 minutes, we were probably the better side and we grew into it. We gifted them a goal and then we did well. We are delighted to go through."

On Aaron Hickey: "I think it is the journey for him and Rico Henry. We are eager to get them involved but it has got to be right. Aaron went away with Scotland and he has come back and he is champing at the bit. He is a special talent."

On Brentford's start to the season: "People might have felt I was trying to spin something in recent weeks but it was all genuine what I was saying. I don't feel our players feel what is possible this season and I think we can have a great season."

Crystal Palace debutant Walter Benitez saved two penalties in the shootout as the Eagles beat south London rivals Millwall in the Carabao Cup third round.

Championship side Millwall had forced penalties thanks to a dramatic Ryan Leonard header from Jack Howland's corner in the first minute of added time.

Palace had taken the lead in the 72nd minute when Chris Richards turned home a loose ball from close range following a corner routine.

And Benitez did Jean-Philippe Mateta a big favour by helping the Premier League side win the shootout 4-2. The French striker missed a sitter deep into injury time when he screwed a shot wide from eight yards out.

Benitez saved from Tristan Crama and Aidomo Emakhu, while Palace scored all four of their spot-kicks.

The success extended Palace's unbeaten run to 16 games in all competitions, a streak going back to mid-April.

They will not find out their fourth-round opponents for another eight days, though, because this round of the competition is spread across two weeks.

League Two side Grimsby Town, who famously knocked out Manchester United in the second round of the Carabao Cup, claimed a deserved win at troubled Sheffield Wednesday to reach the fourth round of the competition.

Many home fans boycotted the game in protest against Dejphon Chansiri's ownership of the Championship club, meaning there were around twice as many Mariners fans inside Hillsborough as Owls supporters.

Grimsby had the better of the first half and they eventually took the lead after the break when Jaze Kabia headed in Reece Staunton's corner.

Thereafter the visitors had opportunities to add to their advantage but one goal proved to be enough against a Wednesday team who made 10 changes from their Championship defeat by Bristol City on Saturday.

Grimsby are now in the fourth round for the first time since the 2001-02 season.

The beleaguered home side's only two wins this season had come against Bolton and Leeds on penalties in this competition, but they could not find the equaliser to send this match to spot-kicks, with visiting goalkeeper Christy Pym not forced into a single save.

    Brentford

Brentford defender Aaron Hickey speaking to Sky Sports about his goal: "It was good. I've seen it last minute and thought 'why not?' And luckily it went in. I will go and have a look at it after this.

"The main thing for me is to try and get back in the team. We still have a lot to improve on and I am delighted to push on the boys who are playing.

"For the boys that don't always play in the league matches, we all have a good character. We are all wanting to play and hopefully we put on a good show."

Brentford goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson speaking to Sky Sports: "Just great. I am so happy.

"Second half was very good and in the first half after 15 minutes was very good. I should have saved their goal but I was happy with the performance. All the guys scored [their penalties]. I am just very happy."

To be fair, at least Villa were a bit better in the way they played today.

Brentford kept themselves in there and scored a great goal and at the end of the day, their penalties were better than Aston Villa's and they deserved to win.

When you have a situation like this when you have started sluggishly, today they were better. They are nowhere near the Aston Villa team we have seen in previous years but they do look better.
