The biggest story of the week so far? Azerbaijan's Qarabag.

They became the first Azerbaijani side to win a Champions League main draw match with a 3-2 victory over Benfica.

Having qualified for Europe's premier competition for the first time in eight years, Gurban Gurbanov's side found themselves facing a 2-0 deficit after just 16 minutes.

The Azerbaijan champions halved the deficit on the half-hour mark through a fine Leandro Andrade finish and equalised shortly after the break.

Substitute Oleksii Kashchuk got the historic winning goal five minutes from time, picking the ball up with his back to goal before finishing brilliantly on the turn.

History for Qarabag, and the result led to the sacking of Benfica manager Bruno Lage.

With Jose Mourinho saying he is close to being appointed their new manager after arriving in Lisbon for talks with the Portuguese club.

  2. Debutants unbeaten so farpublished at 11:53 BST

After Union Saint-Gilloise's historic opening night victory, Bodo/Glimt and Pafos followed it up with a point each away from home to leave the teams making their Champions League debuts unbeaten so far.

Bodo needed two goals in the final 12 minutes to come from 2-0 down at Slavia Prague with Sondre Fet the hero for the Norwegian side.

Pafos may have only been formed 11 years ago but they held Greek giants Olympiacos to a goalless draw despite playing 64 minutes with 10 men following Bruno's red card.

Can we have an opening week clean sweep for the debutants?

Kairat Almaty face a tricky trip to Portugal on Thursday for their first ever Champions League match when they take on Sporting Lisbon.

The Kazakhstan champions are only the second side from the country to play in the Champions League, after Astana in 2015-16.

They beat Celtic on penalties to reach this stage and host Real Madrid on matchday two.

Time now for us to move on again and round-up the rest of the week's Champions League action.

We've also got plenty of preview to Manchester City's clash with Napoli and Newcastle's match against Barcelona on the way.

And before we leave you around 15:00 BST, we have three Premier League news conferences to bring you, with Daniel Farke, Graham Potter and Keith Andrews all speaking to the media.

There is an awful lot going on today.

Chelsea's defence was the downfall last night. Baffles me why on deadline day they were bringing in Garnacho (after letting Madueke leave) and not looking at trying to sign someone like Guehi instead.

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot praised Bayern Munich’s know-how in their win, pointing to Harry Kane’s experience and individual errors from the Blues as decisive moments in the match.

"Bayern won the game with a lot of experience. You talk about the goals Chelsea conceded - Kane with the intelligence to understand that you're 32 and you understand how to put your body and move it for Caicedo to not get to the ball.

"The second goal was Gusto's back pass which was wrong. Bayern was ready to play against them and give them the feeling that they are going to dictate the tempo, especially in the beginning when Chelsea began well."

Chelsea losing Levi Colwill was a huge blow to the season. CB was the weakest position Enzo called for a CB and didn't get one. If you compare Tosin and Trevor Chalobah to other top teams CB's the quality is very different. So expect defensive mistakes like last night.

Last night's defeat to Bayern Munich was Chelsea's first of the season after a steady start to their Premier League campaign.

The Blues sit fifth in the table, but are yet to face a side currently placed above ninth and that won't change with a match against Manchester Untied to come at the weekend.

    Results:

    • Chelsea 0-0 Crystal Palace
    • West Ham 1-5 Chelsea
    • Chelsea 2-0 Fulham
    • Brentford 2-2 Chelsea
    • Bayern Munch 3-1 Chelsea

The match against Bayern was seen as their first big test of what will be a long season following success at the Club World Cup in the summer, and the Blues must bounce back against Benfica on Matchday two.

  9. How unusual is Liverpool’s run of late winners?published at 11:29 BST

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

Liverpool maintained their 100% winning record thanks to Virgil van Dijk’s injury-time winner against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, with all five of their victories earned thanks to goals from the 83rd minute onwards.

Head coach Arne Slot said after the game that fitness was part of the reason for his team’s remarkable record, adding “our mentality is we will always push”.

But just how rare is the Reds’ knack for finding late winners and how does it compare to England’s other Champions League entrants – Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle and Tottenham?

We have looked at those clubs’ last five victories in which the winner was scored in or after the 80th minute. Those strikes have to be ‘go-ahead goals’ to be included. A 90th minute goal to make the score 2-0 won’t count, even if the opposition later pull one back to make the final result 2-1.

Unsurprisingly, none of Liverpool’s rivals score late goals at anywhere near the same rate as the Merseysiders, with Arsenal a very distant second. The last five Gunners victories which fit our criteria span 16 months and 64 games, the most recent of which came at Southampton on the final day of last season.

Tottenham rank third, with their last five late wins coming across a run of 79 games, slightly fewer than Chelsea (82) and Manchester City (83), with Newcastle (109) bringing up the rear.

Firstly, great to be back in the Champions League. I thought the team (Chelsea) played well all in all, punished by a couple of errors which at this level you can't get away with. I personally believe we need a top quality defender, maybe sell two to accommodate.

With Chelsea it's a consistency problem. You put Palmer on the pitch, his performance can only exceed expectations, he'll perform as expected regardless. I can't say the same for the rest of the team. They're all capable of playing well, but they can't be relied upon to produce consistent performances.

    Pat Nevin

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin said the defeat to Bayern Munich was no surprise, suggesting the young Blues side still lacks the experience needed to compete at the very highest level.

"It was the kind of performance that I expected from Chelsea," Nevin said on BBC Radio 5 Live. "A lot of people were saying beforehand that they were going to break into this competition, they are Club World Cup champions and all of that, but I was thinking, 'steady on'.

"The jump you need to do to come to places like this is quite big and a number of players just don't have that experience yet. They weren't able to do it as a group today.

"It wasn't quite men against boys, but Bayern Munich were certainly a good distance ahead of Chelsea here.

"The mistakes Chelsea made were quite naive and they were caught out, not just for the goals, but for a whole raft of chances aside from that. That's what happens with young players playing in this competition, but they will learn from that.

"This level is elite. It is a jump. And that jump may take them a little while."

  14. What do the stats say?published at 11:13 BST

    Bayern Munich 3-1 Chelsea

Although Enzo Maresca was happy with his teams performance, Bayern Munich certainly had the better of the stats.

The home side managed 16 shots to Chelsea's nine, whilst Vincent Kompany's side also had five on target to Chelsea's three.

As always, xG becomes important when looking at these figures and Bayern dominated that metric with a 2.07 in comparison to 0.52.

The most interesting stat is that both teams had 23 touches in the opposition box, and yet the home side were able to create and take more chances than their opponents.

I think once again Chelsea have flattered to deceive drawing in pundits to back them whilst actually not beating anyone decent. It seems because of Palmer all else is wiped under the carpet.

    Alan

As an Everton fan, I think Chelsea rely too much on Palmer, have no proper number nine and lack any proper experience. In two to three years they are going to have a proper team (potentially), but it is going to be up and down getting there.

  17. Champions League not a learning curve for Chelsea - Palmerpublished at 11:01 BST

Cole Palmer says Chelsea do not see this season's Champions League campaign as a "learning curve" - because they want to be competitive in it straight away.

Enzo Maresca's side were second-best as they lost 3-1 to a more experienced Bayern Munich side at Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

It was Chelsea's first appearance in the Champions League since April 2023 - and the match suggested a young team will need to reflect on what it takes to succeed at that level.

But head coach Maresca suggested his side can take plenty from the defeat and "build something special" - while forward Palmer has dismissed the idea that they can't do that quickly.

"We are not coming here for it to be a learning curve," the England international said.

"We have shown tonight we want to compete and we want to do as best as we can."

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on defeat to Bayern Munich: "Personally, I am happy with the performance, because we know how difficult it was to come here against this team. We knew that it would be a very tough game.

"Again, in the first 20 minutes we didn’t concede anything, we created two or three clear chances. Then we conceded a goal and it changed the game.

"Even with that we were in the game until the end. It’s very difficult to come here and control the game for 95 minutes, that is not realistic. Overall I think we competed very well."

England striker Harry Kane exploited error-prone Chelsea to score twice in Bayern Munich's 3-1 Champions League win.

Kane, 32, won and scored a penalty before sealing victory in the second half through a curled shot after a Malo Gusto mistake.

Earlier, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah scored an own goal, while a returning Cole Palmer placed a shot into the top corner to pull one back on his 100th appearance in all competitions for the west Londoners.

There were warnings in the second half as Michael Olise and Kane missed good chances when Chelsea - back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2022-23 season - were chasing an equaliser.

Ultimately, Gusto's misplaced pass led to Kane's curled shot in the 63rd minute that ended the match as a contest.
