Piastri's McLaren team-mate Lando Norris stormed to pole position at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Saturday, with the Australian set to start Sunday's race in seventh.
Norris is 14 points behind Piastri, while Max Verstappen in third is just 40 points further back with five races and two sprints remaining.
Sunday's 71-lap grand prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez starts at 20:00 GMT.
