Dr McKenna Cup: Tyrone and Derry win to make semi-finals

Tyrone beat Antrim 2-9 to 0-6 and Derry defeated Queen's 0-17 to 2-8 on Wednesday night to progress to the Dr McKenna Cup semi-finals from Section A.

Goals from Padraig McNulty and Lee Brennan helped ensure that holders Tyrone secured a semi-final against Fermanagh in Clones on Sunday.

Derry will face Cavan in Armagh after finishing as the best runners-up.

Debutant and man-of-the-match Conor Kearns scored five points from play for the Oak Leafers at Celtic Park.

Gerard McGovern scored the students' opening goal in the first half, with Dermot McAleese adding the second two minutes from time.

McNulty got the Red Hands off to the best possible start at Healy Park as he found the Saffrons' net just 26 seconds into the game.

Ronan O'Neill contributed two frees and Brennan one, while goalkeeper Niall Morgan popped up with two 45's.

It took Antrim 32 minutes to register a score, with Michael McCann pointing, then Colm Fleming adding another.

Morgan made a fine save to deny Brian Neeson, before Brennan executed a superb individual goal to give his side a 2-5 to 0-2 lead at the interval.

Fleming added another three points in the second half, and McCann one, but Hugh Pat McGeary was named man-of-the-match as Mickey Harte's men ran out nine-point victors.

Derry led 0-4 to 0-2 after 13 minutes of their contest against Queen's but McGovern's goal helped the visitors level at 1-2 to 0-5 midway through the opening half.

Damian Barton's outfit led by two, 0-10 to 1-5, at the break, and Michael O'Kane replaced Ciaron O'Boyle in the Derry goals before the resumption.

The last of Kearns' five-point haul left the score 0-15 to 1-8 in his side's favour, and while McAleese's goal reduced the deficit, late scores from Niall Loughlin and Shane Heavron left the hosts comfortable six-point winners.
