Mattie McGleenan named as new Cavan football manager

Mattie McGleenan has enjoyed club success with Monaghan champions Scotstown

Mattie McGleenan has been appointed as the new Cavan senior football boss two months after Terry Hyland stepped down.

Former Tyrone player McGleenan has guided Scotstown to two straight Monaghan county club titles.

Seamus McEnaney, who has managed Monaghan and Meath, was also in the running for the Breffni post.

Hyland took Cavan from Division Three to Division One during his five years in charge and he resigned after an All-Ireland qualifier defeat by Derry.

McGleenan, who has won three Monaghan titles in four years with Scotstown and managed St Patrick's Armagh to MacRory Cup success, has not confirmed his backroom team.

His appointment was ratified by the management and county committees of the Cavan County Board on Monday night.

Cavan were hammered 5-18 to 2-17 by Tyrone in an Ulster SFC semi-final replay in July.

The qualifier exit at the hands of Derry came in round three a fortnight later with just one point separating the sides at Breffni Park.
