There has been no competitive GAA action since March

Ten Derry GAA clubs have suspended activity "as a precautionary measure" because of reported Covid-19 cases in the local community.

Banagher and Craigbane made similar announcements of the suspensions on social media on Thursday evening.

On Friday, Drumsurn, St Colm's Drum, Glack, Limavady, Foreglen, Claudy, Ardmore and Magilligan said they too had temporarily halted all activity.

None of the clubs have reported any positive Covid-19 cases.

Derry GAA says it is monitoring the situation and will act accordingly as the situation unfolds.

"Derry GAA is aware of a number of clubs who have taken precautionary measures as part of their response to Covid-19," said a county statement.

"This remains a developing situation and we will continue to operate based on the latest information and guidance available from Ulster GAA."

The decision to take the precautionary action comes following a rise of cases within the local community.

On Thursday the Public Health Agency identified a cluster of Covid-19 cases in the Limavady area linked to a social gathering.

All the clubs have said they will seek to update their members quickly, with Drum suspending all activity until Monday.

"We are not aware of any players, managers or club officials that have the virus," Banagher's statement said.

The club added that they will "advise further in the next 24 hours".

Craigbane, meanwhile, said that "updates will be posted as things change".

Drumsurn reported that none of their players or members are currently experiencing symptoms consistent with coronavirus.

With all GAA activity having been suspended since March due to the coronavirus pandemic, competitive GAA action returns this weekend with county leagues starting.

Banagher are due to play in their first match in the Derry hurling championship against Eoghan Rua on Saturday 25 July.

The county's football championship is due to begin on 1 August with Banagher, Craigbane and Drumsurn set to be in action on the opening weekend, with Glack and Limavady scheduled to meet in Group A of the intermediate championship.
