Tyrone GAA has paid tribute to Ronan McNamee after the All-Ireland winning defender ended his distinguished Red Hand County career.

McNamee helped Tyrone secure the All-Ireland title in 2021 and he earned an All-Star in 2019 after making his senior debut for the county in 2012.

A Tyrone GAA statement said McNamee, 32, "embodied the spirit of the Red Hand County".

"Rónán stood tall in moments of triumph and adversity," added the statement.

"He played a key role when the Sam Maguire Cup returned to Tyrone in 2021, a moment that will forever be etched in the hearts of us all.

"And he was there in the challenging times, pushing his body to the limits and demonstrating unwavering resilience.

"Thank you for your years of service, your unwavering commitment, and your indomitable spirit. Slán go fóill, a Rónáin!"

In addition to helping Tyrone win the county's fourth All-Ireland title two years ago, McNamee also secured Ulster Championship medals in 2016, 2017 and 2021.

The Aghyaran club-man's decision has to be regarded as a blow for managers Feargal Logan and Brian Dooher as McNamee remained one of the best man-markers in the modern game - despite suffering from a number of injuries in recent seasons.
