Donegal boss Jim McGuinness says his team "left too many scores behind' in the Division Two top-of-the table showdown against Armagh.

Oisin Gallen saw his 66th-minute penalty saved by Armagh keeper Blaine Hughes as the Athletic Grounds encounter ended 1-9 to 0-12.

"We left too many scores behind us - that's the bottom line," said McGuinness.

"We felt we had enough possession to win the game."

Andrew Murnin scored the only goal to help the Orchard hosts into a 1-5 to 0-7 advantage at the break.

Donegal scored the final three points of the first half before moving 0-10 to 1-5 in front, but wasted a golden chance to win it when Gallen was denied by Hughes from the spot.

Orchard outfit stay top

Armagh held a one-point lead in added time, but Shane O'Donnell levelled to earn Donegal a draw.

It leaves Armagh in top spot but only on score difference from Donegal, with fellow Ulster side Cavan a point back.

"Armagh asked a lot of questions of us on their own kick-out in the first half - we got to grips with that in the second half and that gave us a bit of a platform," added McGuinness.

"It was a tough battle and it's always going to be that way with Armagh. You know you're going to get it and we got it. Hopefully it will bring both teams on.

"Both teams were coming in on full points and had any of us won they were going to be in a very strong position for the rest of the campaign. That's what was on the line.

"I think that played out with some of the errors and mistakes from both teams. There were periods where the pressure became too much to bear in both sides and it was one of those games."
