Monaghan's second-half fightback fell short as Tyrone won 1-19 to 2-13 at Healy Park to relegate their Ulster neighbours from Division One.

The gap was seven early in the second half but Vinny Corey's side roared back and got to within one late on.

However, they couldn't find the levelling score that would have kept them alive going into the final round of games.

The win gives Tyrone every chance of avoiding the drop.

In reality, a draw was not going to be what they required but in the end, the great survivors just ran out of lives.

Darragh Canavan with 1-5 and Darren McCurry with 0-6 were in superb form for Tyrone in the first half in particular, but they didn't enjoy the same space in the second as the Monaghan surge came.

Tyrone were straight down to business with McCurry and Canavan opening their accounts, while Kieran McGeary marked his first start of the campaign with a point.

Monaghan hit back after five minutes as Michael Bannigan burst in on the left and found Jack McCarron, who gathered to blast to the net and level.

Tyrone dusted themselves off and continued to pile on the scores with their goal coming on 27 minutes as Niall Morgan played a sublime long ball to Canavan around midfield.

He had space to run into but a lot to do, yet his pace took him clear and although seeming to lose control of the ball, hit it sweetly on the half-volley to give Kieran Duffy no chance to help his side into a 1-11 to 1-6 lead at the break.

Two early points seemed to suggest Tyrone would pull further clear, but gradually Monaghan began to claw their way back with Conor McManus starting to weave his magic with five second-half points.

The goal they needed to fully ignite their charge came after Monaghan's Ryan O'Toole and Tyrone's Brian Kennedy were flashed black cards within a minute of each other.

It was a break from Andrew Woods that opened the Tyrone defence and he popped into the on-rushing Killian Lavelle, who finished with his fist to narrow the gap to two - 1-16 to 2-11 - with 12 minutes to play.

Monaghan continued to grow and McManus had them back to within one, but substitute David Garland was off-target with a chance from a mark with his first involvement.

It was backs to he wall for Tyrone in added time, but a beauty from McCurry steadied them and after Jack McCarron shot at Niall Morgan at the other end, Joe Oguz thumped over late to seal the win.
