Scotland lose Champions Challenge quarter-final to South Africa

Scotland's women were beaten by South Africa in the quarter-finals of the FIH Champions Challenge in Glasgow.

Shelly Russell scored twice to put South Africa in control before Emily Maguire's reply for the Scots.

Ireland beat Korea 2-1, Spain overcame Belgium 3-2 in a sudden death shoot-out after a 2-2 draw and USA beat India by a single goal.

Korea will now face Scotland in one of two classification matches before the semi-finals take place on Saturday.

The Scots drew with Korea in the pool stage.

In the semi-finals, Ireland face Spain and South Africa take on USA.

Reacting to the defeat by South Africa, Scotland head coach Gordon Shepherd told the Scottish Hockey website: "We didn't play for 70 minutes, we got caught cold right at the start when they scored so that was a tough one to take. It gave South Africa huge confidence and the players got a bit nervous.

"We gave them a stern talk at half-time and in the second half they were much better than the level at which they had been playing, causing them some problems but not as many as we would have liked.

"The girls showed character in the second half and we've told them to take away the positives to build on for the rest of the summer so we can improve.

"We know we can get better and we just need to show that level of consistency in the performances we deliver from now on."
