Helen Richardson-Walsh's 39th international goal gave Great Britain a 2-1 win over Olympic and world champions Netherlands in Amsterdam.
Lily Owsley had given the Brits the lead from close range before Kitty van Male equalised just before the break.
"We can be better with the ball, but we were defensively solid, which won us the game," said GB coach Danny Kerry.
The teams play the second and final Test on Thursday before meeting in London in June at the Champions Trophy.
