Great Britain beat Canada 2-0 in Olympic qualifying opener

Great Britain's women opened their Olympic qualifying campaign with a 2-0 win over Canada in Valencia.

Tess Howard scored from the penalty spot - her 12th international goal - and Anna Toman struck from a penalty corner 10 minutes from time.

Britain, who won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, need a top-three finish to qualify for Paris 2024.

"We came into it wanting three points and managed to get that," said player of the match Sophie Hamilton.

Sarah Jones may be a doubt for Sunday's game against Spain.

She required lengthy treatment after landing awkwardly in a collision with Canada goalkeeper Rowan Harris in the final seconds.

Eight teams are competing in Spain, split into groups of four.

The two top from each group will progress to the semi-finals, and the finalists and winners of the third-place play-off qualify for the Olympics.

Spain and Malaysia, who are in Britain and Canada's group, meet later on Saturday.

Britain's men are involved in Olympic qualifying in Oman.
