Great Britain's women and men secure places at Paris 2024 Olympics with qualifier wins

Great Britain's women and men both earned wins which secured their places at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

GB's women beat Ireland 2-1 in the FIH qualifiers bronze-medal match in Valencia, with both sides needing to win to qualify for the Games.

Sarah Jones and Katie Robertson put GB 2-0 up before Hannah McLoughlin scored a late consolation for Ireland.

In Oman, GB's men beat New Zealand 3-1 in the qualifier semi-finals to secure their spot in Paris.

Phil Roper put Britain in front against the Kiwis when he took down a lofted ball and lashed in a shot.

Sam Ward powered in two strikes from penalty corners either side of Kane Russell scoring from a New Zealand penalty corner.

Britain had to deal with five minutes with one less player during the last quarter following a yellow card but maintained their two-goal lead to close out the win and set up a final against Germany on Sunday.

"It's a fantastic day for GB hockey. The girls winning earlier was amazing and then us doing it now," said Ward.

"It's nice not having to play the third/fourth play-off."

New Zealand will play Pakistan on Sunday, with the winner qualifying for the Olympics.

Emotional is definitely the word - Jones

GB's women and Ireland were bidding to join Belgium and Spain in qualifying for the Paris Games and Britain, Olympic gold medallists in 2016, started strongly in Spain.

Elena Rayer had a shot saved before Robertson had a follow-up effort cleared off the line by Ireland's Charlotte Beggs.

Jones then scored as she turned in an angled shot from Hamilton following the game's first penalty corner.

Robertson's goal came early in the fourth quarter following a Hannah French pass.

Ireland, who had swapped their keeper for an extra outfield player with about six minutes left, had a number of penalty corners in the final stages and, while McLoughlin scored, the final whistle went after her effort as GB celebrated victory.

"Emotional is definitely the word. Absolutely thrilled to have qualified for the Olympics," said Jones, who helped GB win bronze at the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

"I think we had a fantastic tournament. Today probably wasn't the best hockey we played but I think we played some fantastic hockey throughout this tournament and I know that's something we will build on.

"Ireland are a fantastic opponent and commiserations to them."
