GB's men and women lose to Australia in Pro League

Great Britain's women's and men's teams both face India on Sunday

Great Britain's men twice gave the lead away as they were beaten 3-2 by Australia during a pulsating Pro League encounter in London.

Earlier on Saturday, Great Britain's women were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Australia at Lea Valley.

Great Britain's men took the lead through Gareth Furlong after seven minutes but Australia hit back four minutes later when Blake Govers equalised.

Great Britain took a lead into the second quarter when Zachary Wallace fortuitously diverted Tom Sorsby's effort into the roof of the net.

But the visitors' dominance started to show and Tom Wickham drew his side level just before half-time when he swivelled from close range and powered home an equaliser.

Govers scored the winner in the 40th minute when his powerful effort beat Oliver Payne from a penalty corner.

"Listen, we're disappointed," Great Britain captain David Ames told TNT Sports.

"We weren't at the level we wanted to be, especially after the last four games. It was always going to be a battle and we were below par at times. That's probably what's done us at the end."

The defeat means Great Britain remain behind Belgium in sixth place in the standings, with seven matches to play - starting with a game against India on Sunday.

GB women have plenty 'to improve on'

Great Britain's women slipped to a second consecutive Pro League defeat with their 3-0 loss to Australia.

After an evenly contested opening quarter, Brooke Peris gave the visitors the lead in the 22nd minute when she scrambled home from close range following a good save from debutant Jess Buchanan.

Great Britain were handed the perfect chance to equalise from the penalty spot in the third quarter when Sarah Robertson was fouled but Tess Howard blazed over the crossbar.

Australia doubled their advantage through Rebecca Greiner in the 39th minute after Stephanie Kershaw capitalised on some loose play from the hosts.

Greiner, 24, grabbed her second of the afternoon six minutes later when she collected a lofty pass and smashed past Buchanan.

Buchanan said on TNT Sports: "It's a dream come true to play for Great Britain and against Australia was even better.

"We came out well but there's obviously stuff to improve on. We knew Australia would give us a great game."

The defeat, which came after a surprise loss to USA on Thursday, leaves Great Britain seventh in the Pro League table, with seven matches remaining.

The first of those is on Sunday against India, who are eighth and playing the last of their 16 games.
