Sheffield Steelers withstood a late comeback to earn a 4-2 win over Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup.

Marc-Olivier Vallerand fired the hosts ahead after just eight minutes, with Angelo Miceli and Mark Simpson netting in the second period to put Sheffield in command.

Tyler Busch and Cole Sanford scored in the third period as Cardiff mounted a fightback, but Simpson fired into an empty net late on for Steelers to seal victory.

Devils return to action in the Challenge Cup against Guildford Flames on Sunday (18:00 GMT).

Steelers host Fife Flyers in the Elite League on Wednesday (19:30 GMT).
