Cardiff Devils have dropped to fourth in Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) after a 3-0 defeat at Sheffield Steelers.

It was a second loss of the weekend after the Devils 3-2 home defeat against Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, and a third straight defeat since returning to domestic action after lifting the Continental Cup trophy.

First period goals from Robert Dowd and Dominic Cormier at Utilia Arena on Sunday put Steelers on the way to their second victory of the weekend.

And Patrick Watling's effort five minutes from time secured a convincing win as Cardiff, despite numerous chances, failed to score in a game for the first time this season.

Devils led the Elite League table throughout the first half of the campaign but now find themselves playing catch-up, having lost to the new top three since their European success.

They are nine points behind leaders Belfast Giants, though have played two games fewer.

Cardiff, who have 44 points, also have one game in hand over Sheffield - who have risen to second on 46 - and third placed Nottingham who have 45 points.

Devils and Steelers meet again in Sheffield on Wednesday, 5 February in the first leg of their Challenge Cup semi-final.

Cardiff then return to EIHL action with games against Coventry Blaze and Guildford Flames next weekend before the second leg with Sheffield at the Vindico Arena on Wednesday, 12 February.
