England and Nottinghamshire batsman Michael Lumb believes Trevor Bayliss is the right man for the England head coach job. The Australian was named as Peter Moores' successor earlier today.

"He's a great man, he's had a lot of success in white ball cricket and he's someone that can take England forward in the future." Lumb said.

"He brings a big calmness to the group and I think with the England group he'll let them be able to express themselves and play with no fear almost like the Australian way that they do now and get all the guys to enjoy the game and play positive cricket.

"Bayliss knows a lot of the New South Wales players in that Ashes squad so he'll come with a lot of homework on them as well."

Man Utd targeting Dani Alves?

Manchester United are targeting Barcelona's 32-year-old Brazilian right-back Dani Alves, but only as a backup option should they fail to sign their favoured defensive recruits - that's according to the Daily Telegraph.

Boro 'will achieve Premier League goal' - Karanka

Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka insists Boro are on track for a return to the Premier League despite their Championship play-off final loss to Norwich on Monday.

Boro ended the Spaniard's first full season in charge fourth in the Championship, their best finish since dropping out of the Premier League in 2009.

"I prefer to remain positive," Karanka told BBC Tees. "To think where we were 18 months ago, five points above the relegation zone, and now we're playing at Wembley."

Watford are close to appointing the Getafe and former Atletico Madrid manager Quique Sanchez Flores after talks with current boss Slavisa Jokanovic broke down over his contract demands.

Jokanovic guided Watford to automatic promotion from the Championship this season but his contract is due to expire at the end of next month. Talks over a new deal broke down after the former Chelsea midfielder asked for a pay rise the owners felt was beyond what they could pay.

Watford have now approached Flores and while no deal has yet been agreed, it is understand he has been offered the chance to take charge of the Hornets on their return to the Premier League.

GB announce World Championships squad

Great Britain announce their squad for the modern pentathlon World Championships, which take place in Berlin from 28 June.

World champion and Olympic silver medallist Samantha Murray will be joined by Kate French,Freyja Prentice and Francesca Summers.

Thomas Toolis,James Cooke, Joseph Choong and Joseph Evans have been selected for the men's team. Toolis, Cooke and Evans will also be heading to the World Cup Final, held in Minsk between 11- 14 June.

Natasha Dowie has been speaking about fellow Liverpool Ladies forward Asisat Oshoala, who won the first ever BBC Women's Footballer of the Year award today.

"She's a great talent and I'm sure she would have been surprised going up against the likes of Nadine Kessler who won the Ballon D'or this year, Kim Little, and Marta - who's won the world player of the year year on year.

"She's 20 years old and she's obviously been recognised for the good work she did last year with Nigeria in the Under-20s World Cup and then when she went away with the seniors. What an achievement. I'm very happy for her. I definitely think there is still more to come."

Ipswich's Bishop faces betting charge

Ipswich Town midfielder Teddy Bishop has been charged by the Football Association for alleged multiple breaches of betting rules.

The player has until 1 June to respond to the charge.

Bishop, 18, made 36 appearances for Championship side Ipswich this season, 26 of them starts, and scored once.

The 35-year-old midfielder is saying goodbye to the Camp Nou on Saturday, as Luis Enrique's side contest Athletic Bilbao for the Spanish Cup.

Landa wins stage, Contador extends Giro lead

Mikel Landa won a second successive mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia with victory on stage 16, as Alberto Contador (pictured) strengthened his grip on the race lead.

Landa convincingly won the 174-kilometres route from Pinzolo to Aprica, with Steven Kruijswijk second and Contador third, both 38 seconds behind.

Yury Trofimov was fourth, two minutes three seconds adrift of Landa, as Contador enhanced his position in the leader's pink jersey.

Fabio Aru began the day in second, 2mins 35secs behind Contador, but finished the stage behind his Astana team-mate Landa to slip to 4:52 adrift overall.

Rafael Nadal has been paying tribute to the 18-year-old he has just knocked out of the French Open in straight sets.

After completing victory, Nadal - aiming for a 10th win at Roland Garros - described French wild card Quentin Halys as "the future of tennis".

"The new style of game he has, trying to hit winners from everywhere - that is the way tennis is moving now," Nadal said. "Playing on centre court for the first time is not easy, so I wish him all the best."

Halys, ranked 296th in the world, was playing his first ever match in the main draw of a grand slam.

I'm sure you knew this already, but there's international cricket being played in Pakistan today as Zimbabwe's tour continues with the first one-day international in Lahore.

And the hosts' batsmen have enjoyed themselves - racking up an imposing 375-5 in their 50 overs, with Shoaib Malik smashing 112 off 76 balls.

Sussex beat Warwickshire in thriller

Division One - Sussex 191 & 190-9 beat Warwickshire 180 & 200 by one wicket at Hove

Chris Jordan's half-century helped Sussex to a dramatic one-wicket win over Warwickshire in Division One.

Jordan, left out of England's team for their Test victory over New Zealand at Lord's, scored 56 not out and hit Boyd Rankin for six to clinch victory.

The visitors were dismissed for 200 in the morning, leaving Sussex 190 to win.

They slipped to 38-3 at lunch, Chris Wright (3-54) taking all three wickets, but Ben Brown (53) gave the hosts hope and all-rounder Jordan saw them home.

Ibe withdraws from England U20s

Liverpool winger Jordan Ibe withdraws from the England under-20 squad because of a recurring knee injury.

The 19-year-old will be replaced by Derby County forward Kwame Thomas, 19.

Aidy Boothroyd's side are playing at the Toulon Tournament this summer - an annual competition in the south of France - alongside China, Ivory Coast, Mexico and Morocco, who they face in their first game on Thursday, 28 May.

Yeovil boss Sturrock signs new deal

Manager Paul Sturrock has agreed a new two-year deal with Yeovil Town, who were relegated to League Two this season.

Sturrock, 58, was appointed Glovers boss in April but had never signed a contract until now.

"I have got a big job to do here at Yeovil and it's something I am enjoying immensely," he told the club's website.

Whelan set in stone

A statue of Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan is to be erected outside the DW Stadium.

The plan has been announced by the club's chairman David Sharpe, who is the 23-year-old grandson of Mr Whelan.

"What my grandfather achieved at Wigan Athletic is beyond the dreams of anyone connected with the club and I feel it is fitting to honour those achievements," he said.

Whelan resigned as chairman in March, a few months after being banned from football-related activity for six weeks and fined £50,000 for making racist comments.

Stuart: As a Durham member I have watched a fair bit of Ben. He is a batsman who always looks to have far more time than anyone else in any match I have seen him in. His batting is better on fast bouncy wickets, against pace bowling. He's more vulnerable at the moment to spin. His bowling is also better suited to fast pitches. Give him those conditions and yes he's got huge potential.

Jeff: Enjoy the moment rather than enjoy the man. Stokes has to be judged over a longer period of time.

Accrington Stanley have signed defender Tom Davies on a one-year deal after his release by Fleetwood Town.

The 23-year-old had loan spells at Alfreton and Scunthorpe last season.

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema is being monitored by Manchester United - that's according to the Guardian.

Arsenal are also reported to be interested in the 27-year-old France international, but United may have the upper hand...

The newspaper suggests Louis van Gaal's Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea could be used as leverage in a deal, with Benzema's future uncertain following Carlo Ancelotit's sacking as Real boss. It does seem as they though were pretty close...

England and Northampton Saints hooker Dylan Hartley of Northampton Saints has been cited for striking an opponent with his head.

The incident happened during Northampton's Premiership semi-final defeat to Saracens at the weekend, when Hartley is alleged - the BBC understands - to have head-butted Saracens hooker Jamie George.

Hartley will appear before an RFU disciplinary panel on Wednesday.

Our reader Kit Marsden has come up with a novel way of picking the Match of the Day running order. Earlier - at 11:27 to be precise - we revealed that Swansea have appeared in the bottom slot more times than anyone else.

Writing in his blog, Norwich fan Kit has devised a formula which "would take an aggregate league position (ALP), by calculating the mean average of the two teams' standings in the table. For example, if the top two teams in the table were to play each other, their ALP would be 1.5 [1st place + 2nd place, divided by two] and so this would be the first game shown".

Oshoala's joy at award

After being named as the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year, Nigeria and Liverpool forward Asisat Oshoala said: "I would like to say thank you to the BBC, to my fans around the world and to everyone who voted."

Oshoala also said the honour was a big lift for Nigeria ahead of this year's World Cup and would help inspire young players in her homeland.

She said: "It's a really good thing for us as a team because we now know that we have something great and now we want to go at the trophy. We can do it, we did it in 2014 we can also do it this year as well.

"There is going to be a lot of motivation for women's football in Nigeria now because of this award because there are a lot of fans out there."

BreakingOshoala wins BBC award

Liverpool Ladies and Nigeria forward Asisat Oshoala has been named as the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year.

Fans voted for the winner and Oshoala, 20, won the award after starring at the Under-20 World Cup in Canada last summer. In addition to being the tournament's leading scorer and voted the best player, her performances led Nigeria to the final, where they were narrowly beaten by Germany.

Stokes - the real deal?

Ben Stokes is being hailed as the saviour of English cricket by all and sundry today, after the all-rounder's man-of-the-match performance in the Test win over New Zealand.

In only his 10th Test, the 23-year-old hit the fastest century in a Lord's Test, a swashbuckling 101 from 92 balls with 15 fours and three sixes.

Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke has set his sights on a lie-in on Saturday morning as he looks to win the Irish Open for the first time at the 24th attempt.

"It's one event I've always aspired to play really, really well in," Clarke said at Royal County Down, ahead of a tournament which starts on Thursday.

"Unfortunately, more Irish Opens than I can count, I've been first off on the Saturday morning which meant that I was not involved in the business end of the tournament. Hopefully this week will be a little bit different."

Clarke has not recorded a single top-10 on the European Tour since winning the Open Championship at Sandwich in 2011, but comes into the event on the back of a closing 66 in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has criticised Fifa for not considering the health of players in setting their international summer schedule.

The Gunners' season ends with Saturday's FA Cup final, before Colombia keeper David Ospina and Chile forward Alexis Sanchez depart for the Copa America, which begins on 11 June.

After the World Cup last year, Wenger says the tournament is "too much". "I am really surprised Fifa authorised that," said the Frenchman.

"I'll watch [the Copa America], but with a little bit of fear. Sanchez has played 50 games for us and goes there again, having already played in the World Cup last summer."

Boxing

Anthony Joshua has vowed to concentrate on his own game ahead of his heavyweight meeting with Kevin Johnson at the O2 Arena on Saturday.

Having dispatched last time out of Raphael Zumbano Love (that's him above, having a snooze on the canvas), Joshua, 25, is expecting a tougher test against 'Kingpin' Johnson, who went the distance with Vitali Klitschko in 2009.

The American has called Joshua "a media hype job" in the build-up, but the Brit said: "I want do a job on him for sure but I am not going to get carried away. I am going to break him down bit by bit."

The fight is part of the Kell Brook-Frankie Gavin bill at the O2 Arena in London at the weekend.

Former Australia batsman Marcus North has been speaking about the appointment of Trevor Bayliss as new England coach: "Trevor will let the guys play cricket, enjoy themselves and create an atmosphere where these guys will develop. With the age group of the current England side, it could be a very good marriage and there might be successful times ahead for England.

"He's so well respected in Australia, his record speaks for itself, and there will be a few jokes going round but everyone in Australia will wish him all the best."

Is Benitez a good fit for Real?

BBC World Service'sSport Today programme has been speaking to former Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz about what Real Madrid can expect from Rafael Benitez if the former Reds boss, currently in charge of Napoli, is named as Carlo Ancelotti's successor.

Ancelotti, 55, was sacked as Real manager on Monday, and Benitez - who managed Henchoz at Liverpool - is the front-runner to replace the Italian.

"He can be quite hard as a manager," Henchoz said. "He's not somebody who talks much with the players, I would say he doesn't have a close relationship with the players.

"In fact it's the opposite. He's quite distant, he's quite cold. I think if he goes to Real Madrid that could be one of his problems. Especially maybe with a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, I don't think he's going to be very happy with the way Rafa handles the players."

Pellegrini on City speculation

This really does seem to be the sacking season for managers - Steve McClaren, Nigel Clough, Carlo Ancelotti, Sam Allardyce... it's all been kicking off over the past few days.

Factor in Jurgen Klopp's departure from Borussia Dortmund (although will he be taking a break, as Bild suggest?) and everyone's all aflutter over who could step in where. What we need is a strong man. Somebody with the will to nip all this speculation in the bud.

Step forward Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini - as the Manchester Evening News reports, the Chilean is determined to stay on and win next year's Premier League title, amid reports Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola is being lined up to replace him.

Morgan Schneiderlin will only leave Southampton this summer for Champions League football and would prefer to stay in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has long been linked with a move away from St Mary's, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is known to be a keen admirer.

"I think my decision is made," the midfielder told French radio station RMC.

"If I leave Southampton, it is for a club that plays better than the Europa League. If a club pays the right amount for me, it will be time to leave."

West Ham earn Europa League place

The draw for the Europa League's first and second qualifying round is on 22 June.

Teams to progress from that stage of this season's competition include Flamurtari Vlore of Albania, Chikhura Sachkhere of Georgia, and Nomme Kalju of Estonia.

The Estonian capital, Tallinn, is beautiful in July, if West Ham fans were to end up there.

In a statement, West Ham joint-chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold said: "We are delighted to have won a place in the Uefa Europa League as we want to ensure the Boleyn Ground the best send-off possible, and progress in this competition will certainly help with that.

"Starting in early July will bring its challenges, but everyone will be relishing the opportunity to feature on the European stage. It should be a fantastic experience."

England finished second in Uefa's Fair Play table, earning an extra spot in the first qualifying round of next season's Europa League.

A duck for Cumbria - Stokes's start in England

No, the headline above isn't the latest reality TV show to hit our screens, BBC Radio 5 live has been speaking to John Gibson, who coached Ben Stokes during his time as a junior at Cockermouth Cricket Club. Here's what he had to say on the England international:

"Ben first came here from New Zealand as a 12-year-old and played with us for five or six years. I thought he was a good player, but I think we'd have been foolish to say we thought he'd play for England - there are lots of junior players who impress. But it's incredible what he has gone on to achieve.

"The first match he played in for Cumbria he got a duck, but he then played for a higher age group and got a big hundred, and that caught the eye of people from other counties. He bowled quickly and hit the ball hard for his age, and that got him off to a good start."

Cambiasso won't be rushed - Pearson

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson would "love" Esteban Cambiasso to sign a new contract but says they will not rush the 34-year-old former Inter Milan midfielder into making a decision.

Pearson said: "Everybody here would love him to stay. He has been a really positive figure on and off the field.

"But we give him time and that is the respect he is due."

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has filmed an interview with The Duke of Cambridge ahead of the FA Cup final between HRH's beloved Aston Villa and holders Arsenal.

The Duke, in his first broadcast interview since the birth of Princess Charlotte, spoke about how he became a Villa fan, his nerves ahead of Saturday's match and the possibility of both his children supporting Tim Sherwood's rejuvenated side.

In the interview, which will air in BBC One's FA Cup final build-up from 17:00 BST on Saturday, HRH also spoke passionately about his role as president of the Football Association and his desire to support the grassroots of the game.

Hernandez joined Real on a season-long loan and the 26-year-old scored nine times in 33 appearances for the Spanish side. His United contract is not due to expire until 2016.

BBC Somerset's Stephen Lamb at Taunton: "A scintillating last-wicket partnership of 74 by the Overton twins - Jamie and Craig - gave Somerset a 47-run first innings lead over Yorkshire on the third morning.

"Excellent bowling from the visitors, with Steven Patterson to the fore, had left Somerset in danger of trailing, but a 19-ball 50 from Jamie Overton included three sixes and seven fours, ending when he was caught at slip by Tim Bresnan off Adil Rashid.

"The match ball had to be replaced after one of the sixes went into the River Tone. But Patterson finished with 5-70 from 23 overs, and Tom Cooper fell just one run short of his maiden century for Somerset. Asked if he expected Bale's future to change at Madrid, Coleman said: "I don't."

In a statement, the ECB's director of England cricket Andrew Strauss said: "Trevor has an outstanding record as coach, has global experience and is very highly regarded in the game.

"He has proved himself in both domestic and international cricket, has a strong reputation for man-management and has shown how to build winning teams in all three formats.

"His expertise in the shorter forms of the game will be vital as we build towards three major ICC events over the next four years.

"Trevor will also work well with Paul Farbrace, an exceptional coach who will continue as assistant coach after helping us to an outstanding victory over New Zealand."

Bayliss will be the first Australian to coach England of course.

He's had considerable success as coach of Twenty20 sides the Sydney Sixers and Kolkata Knight Riders, winning the Australian Big Bash and Champions League with Sydney in 2012 and the Indian Premier League title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014.

But he is perhaps best known for leading Sri Lanka to the 2011 World Cup final in Mumbai, where they narrowly lost to India. Paul Farbrace - England's stand-in head coach after Peter Moores' departure - was his assistant.

BreakingBayliss named new England coach

Trevor Bayliss has been named England's new head coach.

The 52-year-old New South Wales coach succeeds Peter Moores, whose second spell ended in a sacking in early May.

Bayliss led Sri Lanka from 2007-2011, took temporary charge of Australia for their Twenty20 series in South Africa in 2014 and has coached Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

He played in 58 first-class matches as a batsman for his native New South Wales but never represented Australia.

Does Terry want Ancelotti back?

John Terry has had some kind words for Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked as manager of Real Madrid on Monday. The 55-year-old Italian was also fired from Chelsea in 2011, after two years in charge.

Chelsea captain Terry told Talksport: "I was very close with Carlo both on and off the pitch."

"He's a close second to Jose Mourinho, in terms of my favourite manager. With what I've won under Jose, he just edges it.

"Carlo is a fantastic manager and an unbelievable man-manager. I'd love to see him back in the Premier League and winning things."

Formula 1

No action is to be taken against a former Formula 1 team after test driver Maria de Villota suffered a severe crash in Cambridgeshire in 2012, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said.

De Villota lost her right eye at Duxford Airfield while testing for Marussia and died a year later aged 33. The HSE said the driver's family had been informed of its decision.

Manor Grand Prix Racing, which operated Marussia and now runs the Manor team, has yet to comment.

But this season I imagine being Blackpool manager hasn't been easy - basically have to build a team from scratch with no transfer money and little to offer in terms of wages. You're in a very demanding league, with a delusional chairman, a club infrastructure which is laughable: training pitch, kit washing, no spare kit, etc, and will probably encounter some damage to your win percentage and reputation.

Hernandez charged with violent conduct

The Football Association charge Hull forward Abel Hernandez with violent conduct for an incident with Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

The incident, which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video, occurred in the 70th minute of Sunday's Premier League fixture.

Hernandez, 24, has until 18:00 BST on Wednesday to reply to the charge.

Remember the story about fans of the Houston Rockets being trapped for hours inside an arena after five inches of rain caused flash floods during their team's win over Golden State Warriors.(08:14)?

Well, BBC Sport has tracked one of those fans down.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has called up uncapped Sevilla duo Sergio Rico and Aleix Vidal for next month's internationals against Costa Rica and Belarus, but Chelsea forward Diego Costa misses out.

Goalkeeper Rico, 21, and winger Vidal, 25, have been rewarded for some impressive performances this season for the Andalusian club, who finished fifth in La Liga and face Dnipro in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Costa and Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago are among those absent, with fitness concerns ruling both players out of Del Bosque's plans.

Dundee have confirmed that Kyle Letheren will be released when the goalkeeper's contract ends at the end of this month.

The 27-year-old Welshman joined Dundee after leaving Scottish Premiership rivals Kilmarnock in 2013.

Well the news is that there's... no news. The Evening Chronicle are reporting that Newcastle are yet to make an approach for Steve McClaren, who was sacked as Derby County boss on Monday.

It has been quite a six months for Norwich manager Alex Neil.

Defender Martin Olsson is clearly a fan of the boss, saying: "We've been working well under Alex. No disrespect to [previous boss Neil Adams] but if Alex had been in charge from the start of the season I think we would have won promotion automatically. He's a very tough manager but that's what we needed."

Neil, 33, said: "I'm more pleased for everybody else about winning promotion. The thing that drives me is letting people down and Norwich showed so much belief in giving me the job so young."

Bournemouth sign former Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc on a free transfer after the Poland international was released by Saints.

Boruc had spent the majority of last term on loan at Eddie Howe's side.

Valencia to miss Copa America?

Manchester United defender/winger/midfielder Antonio Valencia is likely to miss Ecuador's Copa America campaign as he's just had surgery to remove metal pins from his ankle, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph.

Ecuador's opening match is against tournament hosts Chile on June 11, and the 29-year-old is expected to be out for two weeks.

Valencia had the pins put in after suffering ligament damage in a Champions League match against Rangers in September 2010.

Jason Gillespie has admitted he would have made the same decision as Andrew Strauss had he been in charge of finding the next England coach.

The Aussie appears to have missed out on the job, with the ECB reported to be in advanced talks with former Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss.

"If I put myself in Andrew's shoes, I'd probably make the same decision, if I'm honest," Gillespie told the Yorkshire Post.

"I spoke to Andrew Strauss this morning. He said they've got a preferred candidate they're speaking to. I said, 'That's fine, no worries at all.'"

Only 19,000 tickets have been sold for Tottenham's fixture against a Malaysian XI on Wednesday after supporters group Ultras Malaya labelled the game "a circus match", saying it caused disruption to their domestic league and World Cup qualifying preparations.

Luke Procter hard at work in his local barbers

Lancashire all-rounder Luke Procter spent his winter training to be a barber and is now spending the summer practising on his Red Rose team-mates.

The 26-year-old set up a makeshift salon in the toilet area of the home dressing room at Old Trafford and offers a free service to his team mates.

As part of a personal development plan devised with the Professional Cricketers' Association, Procter has even cut the hair of his boss, Ashley Giles.

"Luke was a little bit nervous but he's very good," said former England spinner Giles. "He's got a good hairdresser's chat and he did a very good job on me. He used the clippers on the side and the back and then the scissors on the top and a comb-over for a George Clooney look, which is what I asked for."

GB's World Championship squad

British Cycling announces the five riders who will represent the Great Britain in the UCI BMX World Championships.

The games run from 21 - 25 July in Zolder, Belgium and Kyle Evans,Quillan Isidore,Liam Phillips and Tre Whyte will be competing in the elite men's category.

Clement set for Derby job

Real Madrid assistant manager Paul Clement is set to replace Steve McClaren as Derby County head coach, BBC Derby Sport reports.

McClaren was sacked on Monday following constant speculation about him taking over at Newcastle and Derby's failure to make the Championship play-offs.

Clement, 43, has been Real's number two to Carlo Ancelotti since 2013, but the Italian was sacked on Monday and he is now expected to take over at the IPro Stadium later this week.

Di Matteo resigns as Schalke manager

Schalke have had some high points this year - most notably their 4-3 win at Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 in March (even though they still went out on aggregate to the Spanish club).

In a statement, sporting director Horst Heldt says they could not "stop the downward trend" in the second half of the season.

Di Matteo had led the club to third place in the German table, having taken over when they were 11th in October. But defeat by strugglers Hamburg on Saturday left them with two wins from 10 games, and they missed out on a Champions League place by finishing sixth.

Where next for Roberto Di Matteo then? He leaves Schalke after seven and a half months in charge, having failed to secure the club a place in next season's Champions League.

The Championship club said they had made the decision following a "thorough review of the 2014-15 season".

"I'm very disappointed with the decision," said the former England boss in a statement.

It's little wonder then that when asked why Carlo Ancelotti had been given the boot, club president Florentino Perez said: "What did Ancelotti do wrong? I don't know" - a quote which makes the front page of Spanish paper AS.
