    Football

    Phil McNulty

"Clyne, 24, is earmarked by manager Brendan Rodgers as the replacement for Glen Johnson, who has left Liverpool at the end of his contract, and to provide added squad depth with Jon Flanagan a long-term absentee after knee surgery.

"Southampton were hopeful Clyne would sign a new contract at St Mary's as his current deal runs out next summer, but he now looks destined to join Liverpool's other summer signings James Milner, Danny Ings and former Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan at Anfield.

"Liverpool are yet to make an improved offer but one will certainly arrive for Southampton to consider and it is expected a bid in the region of £15m will bring the move close, with Saints having already signed Portugal defender Cedric Soares from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £4.7m."

  74. BreakingMo Farah statement (1/2)

Mo Farah has released a statement following reports that he missed two drugs tests before the London Olympics.

It has been reported that double Olympic champion Farah, 32, first missed a test in early 2010, then a second one came at the distance runner's home in February 2011.

    Mo Farah

"I have never taken performance enhancing drugs in my life and I never will. Over the course of my career I have taken hundreds of drugs tests and every single one has been negative. I've fully explained the only two tests in my career that I have ever missed, which the authorities understood, and there was never any suggestion that these were anything more than simple mistakes.

"The last two weeks have been the toughest of my life - with rumours and speculation about me that are completely false - and the impact this has had on my family and friends has left me angry, frustrated and upset. In particular, the media pressure on my young family and my wife, who is five-months pregnant, is extremely painful, especially as I'm away training for some important races."

    US Open

    Stephen Gallacher

Stephen Gallacher says this year's US Open course feels like playing on any championship course in Scotland.

But, given the Ryder Cup player recorded an opening round of 78, he did not appear to be hugely at home.

"It's very Scottish looking on the eye," he said. "You could be playing any course in Scotland: Dornoch, Castle Stuart or Kingsbarns."

Live commentary of the final two rounds are on BBC Radio 5 live on Saturday and Sunday between 22:00 BST and 03:00 BST. Live text updates are available from 1900 BST for every round on the BBC Sport website.

The Tour of Britain is on to the third stage today. Yesterday, Belgium's Jolien d'Hoore crossed the line first in Clacton, to move within a second of leader Lisa Brennauer.

  133. On board the McClaren coach

    Football

    Steve McClaren

New Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren is a bit of a maverick - he fancies getting his coaching team in place before the players return for pre-season training.

It would be a lot to take on by himself to be fair.

"I'm looking for the best," McClaren told BBC Newcastle.

"It can be difficult because good people are always working elsewhere. No doubt though, I want my team in by next week, with a good week to 10 days to prepare."

    Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods shooting 80 in the opening round of the US Open is merely the latest calamity amid a run that has seen the 39-year-old drop to 181st in the world rankings.

A 14-time major winner should, frankly, never be posting a score of eight-over-fours (or 10-under-fives if you prefer) but he's not the only sporting star to suffer a fall from grace.

With that in mind, we want to know whose you think is the saddest sporting decline?

  139. Your thoughts on Kane

    #bbcsportsday

We've not even asked you about it and you're already chatting about whether Harry Kane should join Manchester United, over on our Match of the Day Facebook page.

Sharad Sasha Vemalanathan: As a United fan, he's better off staying where he is. Kane would do best playing week in and week out for 90 minutes in the Premiership before moving to the 'bigger' teams.

Joel Howden: He will never be the main man at United, he will be at Spurs as long as he's there. He's not worth £40m either. One good season can't justify that fee.

Sara Neill: I'm a Man Utd fan and I think he should stay where he is. It's better for his career. Young players might have less opportunity in big clubs.

  140. Flattery gets you nowhere

    Football

    Harry Kane

Even the presence of living, breathing superhero Harry Kane could not help England under-21s last night.

But the Tottenham striker was asked about his rumoured move to Manchester United. He's flattered, although not flattered enough, it seems...

  141. No win? No worries

    Football

    Gareth Southgate

It wouldn't be summer without England losing games of football at a major tournament, would it?

England's under-21s suffered a 1-0 defeat by Portugal in their European Championship opener last night.

But do not worry, England still have a great chance of reaching the semi-finals... according to boss Gareth Southgate.

Brazil are through to the last 16 of the Women's World Cup. Their 1-0 win over Costa Rica last night means they top group E after the three games.

Brazil are joined by South Korea, who beat Spain 2-1 to secure a qualification spot.

    Tiger Woods

Hello. Did you have that Friday feeling as you sprung out of bed this morning?

If you didn't, just thank your lucky stars and stripes that you're not Tiger Woods, who will no doubt still be in his pyjamas, trying to sleep off the round from hell at the US Open yesterday.

    But then remember he's a world-class golfing multi-millionaire and you're (probably) not.

    Welcome to Sportsday.
