US Open update

Jordan Spieth is using being one of the first out to put some pressure on the rest of the field.

The 21-year-old, who won the Masters earlier on this year, shot four birdies in his opening eight holes to move into the overall lead by a shot on six under.

But, having started on the 10th, he then dropped two shots on the 18th to drop a shot behind the leaders.

Sussex skipper plays down relegation fears

Sussex captain Ed Joyce says his team should not be worried by relegation fears.

The Hove side have lost five of their last six Division One games and are fifth in the table, having played a game more than the bottom four.

"We're realistic about where we are," he added. "A lot of it is circumstance and the way it has gone; pitches we've played on, a few tosses and lots of injuries."

Murray survives Queen's scare

Andy Murray was given a stern test by Gilles Muller in their quarter-final at Queen's but has won 3-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4.

Australia tour a 'massive challenge'

England head coach Stuart Lancaster says the three-match tour to Australia next year will be a "massive challenge and one to really look forward to".

The games will be next June and Lancaster added: "We haven't toured Australia since 2010 so for most of our squad it will be their first opportunity to play a senior Test there and I'm sure it will be a great series.

Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika said: "There is no question England are our greatest rivals from the north and this is guaranteed to be a really hard-fought and physical series."

Drinkhall misses out on medal

Britain's Paul Drinkhall missed out on a table tennis medal in Baku after losing the bronze medal match. The Englishman, who was seeded 16, lost 4-2 to Lei Kou of the Ukraine.

Brewster takes up Plymouth role

Former Inverness and Dundee United manager Craig Brewster has joined Plymouth Argyle as assistant to new boss Derek Adams.

The 48-year-old was previously Adams' number two at Ross County.

Wolves in the hunt for half-backs

Warrington coach Tony Smith says the Super League side are "scouring the world looking for half-backs" after failing to settle on a first-choice pairing so far this season.

"I don't want to make my half-backs feel bad about it, but we understand that we haven't been consistent enough in those sort of positions this year," he said.

Crawley sign Walton

League Two side Crawley Town have signed midfielder Simon Walton following his departure from Stevenage.

The 27-year-old scored five goals in 33 appearances for Boro last season and has agreed a two-year contract.

Moore secures record Ascot win

Jockey Ryan Moore secured a modern-day record-breaking ninth winner at Royal Ascot on Aloft in the Queen's Vase.

The 31-year-old could yet break the all-time record of 12 winners set by Fred Archer in 1878.

"I'm very lucky, I get to ride the best horses and that makes a big difference, " said the three-time champion jockey.

"It (the record) is not something you think about, we'll think about rides tomorrow then worry about this."

Glamorgan sign Carter

Glamorgan have signed Nottinghamshire seamer Andy Carter on loan for the second time this season.

Carter took 12 wickets in a month-long spell at the Swalec Stadium at the start of the season and will come into contention for Glamorgan's LV County Championship Division Two home match against Leicestershire, which starts in Cardiff on Monday.

"It's no surprise to me that they have put themselves in contention because there are a lot of good cricketers at the club and it's a very positive dressing room," Carter told the official club website.

Andy Murray lost the first set against Gilles Muller but has just levelled as the quarter-final at Queen's has gone into a decider.

Tiger Woods opened his second round with a bogey on the 10th but, while he looks set to miss the cut after his opening round 80, he did pick up a birdie on the 12th. It was a rare moment of joy as another bogey on the 14th followed.

Masters champion Jordan Spieth is a man on the move. He has picked up three birdies in his first six holes to move into a share of the lead on five under.

Justin Rose, who won the US Open in 2013, is in the same group as Spieth and has two birdies and a bogey in his first six holes. He's one over for the tournament.

US Open greens criticised

The greens at the Chambers Bay course being used for the US Open are "as bad as they look", says Sergio Garcia.

The Spaniard was happy with his level-par opening round of 70 but added on Twitter: "A championship of the calibre of the US Open deserves better quality green surfaces."

World number one Rory McIlroy, who hit a two-over 72, said: "They are not the best I have putted on."

Colin Montgomerie, who had a one-under 69, described them as "extremely poor".

Dunkley admits FA doping breach

Oxford United defender Chey Dunkley has been reprimanded after admitting breaching the Football Association's anti-doping regulations.

The 23-year-old tested positive for salbutamol after using an inhaler prescribed for his asthma, but a regulatory commission hearing found there was no intention on Dunkley's part to enhance sporting performance.

He will also be subject to target testing for two years.

Moore breaks Royal Ascot record

Ryan Moore has broken the post-War record for winners at a single Royal Ascot meeting.

Moore won his ninth race when he rode Aloft to victory in the 17.35 BST race, the Queen's Vase.

Lester Piggott (1965 and 1975) and Pat Eddery (1989) both rode eight winners.

Fred Archer holds the overall record with 12 wins in 1878.

'Mo is the only one people care about'

British sprinter-turned-bobsledder Craig Pickering has been speaking about his experiences of the drug testing system.

Mo Farah has today released a statement saying he has never taken performance-enhancing drugs, after reports that he missed two tests in the 2010-11 season.

"It's not uncommon for athletes to miss tests - athletes shouldn't miss tests but it's built into the system that you can miss two," said Pickering.

"Athletes miss tests, but Mo is the only one people care about. The fact you can miss two shows UKAD accept that it can happen."

"Liverpool remain confident of signing Southampton's England right-back Nathaniel Clyne - despite seeing an opening £10m bid rejected.

"Clyne, 24, is earmarked by manager Brendan Rodgers as the replacement for Glen Johnson, who has left Liverpool at the end of his contract, and to provide added squad depth with Jon Flanagan a long-term absentee after knee surgery.

"Southampton were hopeful Clyne would sign a new contract at St Mary's as his current deal runs out next summer, but he now looks destined to join Liverpool's other summer signings James Milner, Danny Ings and former Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan at Anfield.

"Liverpool are yet to make an improved offer but one will certainly arrive for Southampton to consider and it is expected a bid in the region of £15m will bring the move close, with Saints having already signed Portugal defender Cedric Soares from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth up to £4.7m."

Tsonga forced to miss Nottingham

French Open semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has had to pull out of next week's Nottingham ATP World Tour event because of an abdominal strain.

The world number 12 lost to eventual winner Stan Wawrinka at Roland Garros earlier this month and has not played since.

His injury means he will have played no grass-court tennis prior to Wimbledon, which begins on 29 June.

In his second round, the 21-year-old opens with a birdie at the 10th to close the gap before a par at the 11th. He then missed a short birdie putt at the 12th when his effort caught the edge of the hole.

Lyon to offer Lacazette new deal

Lyon are ready to make striker Alexandre Lacazette their highest paid player to keep him at the club.

Lacazette finished last season as the top scorer in Ligue 1 with 27 goals, but Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said it would be "a strategical error" to sell the France international.

"Alexandre wishes to be the number one and receive the biggest salary at the club, which is absolutely understandable. He will earn at least four million euros (£2.9m) a year," said Aulas.

Lacazette, France's player of the year, is currently under contract until 2018.

Robson gets tough draw

Laura Robson has drawn the top seed, and world number 41, Daria Gavrilova in the first round of the Eastbourne qualifying competition.

The former British number one has not played a competitive match since last year's Australian Open because of a wrist injury.

Tiger Woods shot an opening round of 80 at the US Open yesterday and the former world number one and 14-time major winner has just got his second round at Chambers Bay in Washington under way.

The early signs are not good as he aims to show he still has some of the old magic.

He puts a shot from the fairway into the rough on a grassy slope, slips as he tries to work a way out and sends his shot to the green way past the hole. He finally opens with a five on the par-four 10th.

The 24-year-old defender has signed a five-year contract.

Tour de France in UCI stand off

The organisers of the Tour de France are threatening to pull out of the world governing body's calendar in 2016, according to Reuters.

The UCI (International Cycling Union) oversees global cycling, but ASO (Amaury Sport Organisation) organise the Tour, which is the biggest cycling event in the world. Sir Bradley Wiggins was the first British winner in 2012.

According to reports, ASO are concerned by a lack of progress in the UCI's reform programme. The UCI had promised a calendar restructure, to prevent races clashing.

The Tour would still go ahead next year, just not as a UCI recognised event.

'A lion in a cage'

Liverpool forward Fabio Borini wants to leave the club this summer, according to his agent.

Borini made just 12 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in the 2014-15 campaign and the Italian wants a move away from Anfield in search of more playing time.

"Fabio wants a new experience," Borini's agent Marco De Marchi told Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport. "We expected more consideration from Liverpool. There are teams from all over Europe interested in him.

"Right now he feels like a lion in a cage."

Wiggins to return to the roads

Sir Bradley Wiggins is to return to the roads for the London-Surrey Classic on 2 August.

The 2012 Tour de France winner will compete in the 200km race which will also feature sprinter Mark Cavendish.

"It's always fantastic to race on home roads and this race is very special," said Wiggins.

"My team is really looking forward to it. I was amazed how many people were out watching last year in that appalling weather."

Fulham make double signing

Fulham have agreed the signing of midfielder Ben Pringle (pictured) and goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, from Rotherham and Bolton respectively, on two-year contracts.

The pair will join the London club on free transfers when their current contracts expire on 1 July.

Kerry Dixon jailed

Kerry Dixon, 53, played eight times for England between 1985 and 1986.

He scored 147 goals in 335 games for Chelsea and also had spells at Reading, Southampton, Luton, Millwall and Doncaster.

Former England and Chelsea footballer Kerry Dixon has been jailed for nine months for punching and kicking a man who is said to have called him "fatso".

Dixon, 53, denied assaulting the man at a pub in Luton in May 2014, but was convicted of the offence last week.

Luton Crown Court heard the assault was captured on CCTV cameras at the Nag's Head in Dunstable.

Judge Barbara Mensah described the attack as "shocking and sickening to watch".

The issue is back on the agenda though as players and coaches have raised concerns about the pitches, with the group stage now complete.

Vale's Birchall signs new contract

Trinidad and Tobago international midfielder Chris Birchall, 31, has signed a new one-year contract with Port Vale.

Birchall started his career at Vale Park and returned to the club in 2013 after spells at Coventry and Brighton, as well as a stint in America. He played alongside David Beckham during his time with Los Angeles Galaxy.

Confirmation that Christine Majerus's victory in the third stage of the Women's Tour of Britain was enough to give her the overall lead. The Dutch rider, who won a sprint finish in Kettering, is three seconds ahead of Belgium's Jolien D'Hoore.

Karlovic eclipsed the previous ATP record of 44 in a best-of-three-sets match, which he shared with Mark Philippoussis.

"I always like when I'm best at something, so if it's aces I'm happy about it," said Karlovic.

Buttler doubt for decider

Jonny Bairstow has been called up to England's squad ahead of the fifth one-day international with New Zealand after wicketkeeper Jos Buttler split the webbing on his left hand in practice on Friday morning.

The series is tied at 2-2 going into Saturday's decider and Buttler has been one of England's star performers.

"Jonny Bairstow has been added to the squad as cover for Jos Buttler who has split the skin at the base of his thumb on his left hand," said England Cricket.

The hosts will wait to see how Buttler's hand recovers before making a final decision on his participation on Saturday morning.

Britain's world champion Bianca Walkden has been beaten in the quarter-finals at the European Games in Baku.

She lost to the world ranked number 19, Ukranian Maryna Konieva, by a golden point after a 13-13 tie.

Walkden now has to wait to see if she qualifies for the repechage, which would still give her chance of a bronze medal.

Afghanistan's cricket board chairman Nasim Danish has tol BBC Pashto that they will not be extending Andy Moles' contract as coach of the national team.

They are approaching Pakistan's bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed, who has expressed interest in the position, to be his replacement.

'I didn't have to speak to Mourinho'

Gael Kakuta has spent most of his time at Chelsea out on loan but is finally hoping to settle at a club after joining back-to-back Europa League winners Sevilla on a four-year deal.

"It's true that I've been in many clubs throughout my career but now I want to find continuity here," the 23-year-old said. "My idea is to remain here for a long time.

"My departure from Chelsea has been fast. I didn't have to speak to [Chelsea coach Jose] Mourinho."

Kakuta makes Sevilla move

Remember the fuss Chelsea made to sign this guy in 2007?

Well, eight years and six loan clubs later, Gael Kakuta has completed a move to Sevilla after passing a medical with the Spanish club.

You may recall his signing at Chelsea initially resulted in a transfer ban for the Blues and suspension for Kakuta due to a breach of his contract with Lens, although both punishments were successfully appealed against.

Jagielka extends Everton deal

Phil Jagielka has signed a one-year contract extension with Everton which will keep him at Goodison Park until the summer of 2018.

"It's always nice to feel wanted," said Jagielka. "Being rewarded with the extra year gives me that motivation to keep striving to get better and to keep going for as long as possible.

"It wasn't the longest negotiations ever - it only took a couple of minutes rather than hours. I love it here, I want to stay here and thankfully enough the club felt the same."

Derby sign Northern Ireland's Baird

Derby County have signed Northern Ireland international defender Chris Baird on a two-year contract.

The 33-year-old, who has 72 caps, left Premier League side West Bromwich Albion at the end of the season.

Vanessa Mae ban lifted

Violinist Vanessa Mae's four-year ban from skiing by the International Ski Federation has been lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas).

Cas found there was "insufficient evidence" to back the suspension, although it backed the decision to expunge Mae's results at the Winter Olympics last year.

The tribunal said she "was ineligible to compete" in the Sochi Games because the qualifying events in Slovenia were "so defective".

Mae, competing under her family name of Vanessa Vanakorn, came 67th and last in the women's giant slalom at the Olympics.

Swansea sign Tabanou

Franck Tabanou has been speaking after completing his move from St Etienne to Swansea.

"I believe it's the right move forward for me at this stage of my career," said the former France Under-21 international.

"I was aware of Swansea's interest in me for a while, but unfortunately it didn't happen in January. But I've been watching them closely ever since and I like the way they play the game; their whole philosophy on football."

Franck Tabanou becomes Swansea's second signing of the summer following the arrival of Andre Ayew earlier this month.

Tabanou, whose switch from St Etienne is subject to Premier League and international clearance, started out as a winger before moving to left-back and will provide competition for Neil Taylor.

He helped St Etienne to fifth in Ligue 1 last season which secured the club a place in the Europa League.

Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfielder Roy Keane has been cleared of a public order offence.

The 43-year-old was at Manchester Magistrates Court today following an alleged altercation with a taxi driver.

The district judge said prosecution case against Keane was "riven with inconsistencies "

A BBC investigation alleged that Farah's coach, Alberto Salazar, had practised doping techniques with US athlete Galen Rupp.

Farah's statement continues: "As I made clear, I went to Portland to speak to Alberto Salazar and demand answers. He reassured me that the claims are false and that he will soon be providing evidence to make that clear. Until then I will not be commenting further on the allegations.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fans, family, friends and teammates for all the great support they have provided over the last few days and hope that I will now be allowed to focus on my training and winning medals for my country."

Mo Farah has released a statement following reports that he missed two drugs tests before the London Olympics.

It has been reported that double Olympic champion Farah, 32, first missed a test in early 2010, then a second one came at the distance runner's home in February 2011.

"I have never taken performance enhancing drugs in my life and I never will. Over the course of my career I have taken hundreds of drugs tests and every single one has been negative. I've fully explained the only two tests in my career that I have ever missed, which the authorities understood, and there was never any suggestion that these were anything more than simple mistakes.

"The last two weeks have been the toughest of my life - with rumours and speculation about me that are completely false - and the impact this has had on my family and friends has left me angry, frustrated and upset. In particular, the media pressure on my young family and my wife, who is five-months pregnant, is extremely painful, especially as I'm away training for some important races."

Franck Tabanou has completed his move to Swansea from French club St Etienne on a three-year deal.

Stoke target 'one or two more signings'

Stoke City chief executive Tony Scholes says the Potters still hope to make "one or two" more signings before the new season.

Last season they finished ninth in the Premier League with a club record 54 points but he said they would like to continue improving.

"There's one or two we'd still like to do," Scholes told BBC Radio Stoke." We've got a squad that's very strong already and we're looking to improve."

Dundee United sign Durnan

Dundee United have completed the signing of Queen of the South centre-back Mark Durnan.

Rosberg tops Austrian GP practice

Nico Rosberg beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton to the fastest time in an incident-packed first practice at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Both were among a number drivers who ran off at the penultimate corner, as all struggled to find grip in cool conditions at the Red Bull Ring.

In one bizarre incident, there was a near-miss in the pit lane when Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene nearly got run over. He stepped off the pit wall to walk back to the garage just after Williams released Felipe Massa from his pit box.

The Brazilian managed to stop in plenty of time and an embarrassed Arrivabene pulled himself up short, giving Massa a sheepish thumbs up as he waited for the Williams to go by.

Salazar plays down Farah training in France

Mo Farah's coach, Alberto Salazar, insists the British Olympic champion is training in France rather than his Oregon base as part of his planned training regime.

Farah will compete in Monaco on 17 July in what will be his first race since doping allegations were made against Salazar.

"Mo is on a different training cycle, as he always is at this time of year," Salazar told an Oregon newspaper.

"So I send him to Europe to get accustomed to the time zone. This is how we've always done it."

Bevan handed two-year ban

Ross Bevan has been banned for two years after testing positive for the use of steroids.

The 22-year-old winger from Nelson, near Caerphilly, joined League 1 club South Wales Scorpions from rugby union club Nelson at the start of the season but never played for the club.

UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) say Bevan tested positive for exogenous anabolic androgenic steroid Drostanolone following an out-of-competition test at a squad training session on 9 February.

Lizzie Armistead had to pull out of the Women's Tour earlier this week when she crashed as she celebrated winning the first stage.

The 26-year-old then collided with a group of photographers and race director Mick Bennett.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, she said: "You win a race and you celebrate by putting your hands in the air but, unfortunately, some wind or something in the road caught my front wheel and pulled me to the left.

"I went to grab my handlebars to save it but I'd been thrown off my line and went straight into some photographers. My first instinct was to worry about the photographer as he was bent on his knees at wheel height and I hit him at a good speed.

"It was a pretty heavy impact and my leg took most it. I have still got a bit of a dead leg but it could have been worse."

Pukki makes Celtic exit

Celtic striker Teemu Pukki has sealed a permanent switch to Brondby after last year's loan stint with the Danish club.

Chris Lewis: Hughie Gallacher. Once the best player in the world (certainly in Britain), and ended up killing himself on a railway line.

If you haven't heard of wee Hughie, he was quite the player. Despite being just 5ft 5in, he scored 23 goals in 20 games for Scotland and 406 in 554 games for the likes of Newcastle, Chelsea and Derby. He died age 54 in 1957.

Giggs expects improvement

Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has told the club's website that he expects the team to push on and challenge for honours in the upcoming season.

"We've had a pretty good start and are back in the Champions League, which is exciting," said the Welshman when asked about how the team had fared under Louis van Gaal's leadership.

"I think we can achieve a lot as we have shown this year we are capable of matching the best teams in the league. Now we just have to work on our consistency, and if we get off to a good start next season we can definitely do that."

England to tour Australia in 2016

Australia will host England in a three-Test series with matches in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney during next year's June international break.

It will be the first time the two nations have played three matches in a series and the opening test will take place at Brisbane's Lang Park on 11 June with Melbourne's Rectangular Stadium hosting the second match a week later and the series concluding at the Sydney Football Stadium on 25 June.

England have taken some heavy beatings in Australia over the years, most notably a 76-0 thrashing at Lang Park on their 1998 tour, but famously triumphed at Sydney's Olympic Stadium in the 2003 World Cup final.

The Hammers move into the 54,000-capacity venue next year.

Gregory switches to help Rio 2016 bid

Britain's Alex Gregory is happy to race in the men's eight in the World Cup in Italy this weekend to help the team get all their boats into next year's Rio Olympics.

Gregory won gold in the coxless four at London 2012 but has switched to the eight to help them gain qualification.

Olympic places for 2016 will be earned at the World Championships in France between 30 August and 6 September.

"The primary goal is to make sure every boat is on the start line in Rio," Gregory told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
