Sneyd faces disciplinary charge

Hull scrum-half Marc Sneyd could be banned for three to five matches after being charged by the Rugby Football League with making dangerous contact on Leeds' Danny McGuire.

It follows a controversial challenge in Sunday's Super League game that left the Rhinos half-back with a suspected broken ankle.

Huddersfield's Brett Ferres has been charged with a grade C offence of punching following his sending-off after an incident involving Rhys Hanbury in the Giants' victory at Widnes on Sunday and could be banned for two or three games if found guilty.

Women's World Cup

In Norway, England face a team ranked 11th, six places below them, but who drew 1-1 with two time-champions Germany in the group stages.

England were beaten 3-0 by the world's number one team at Wembley last November.

Sampson's team also drew 1-1 in a friendly with Norway in January 2014, which was his first game in charge. "It feels about 35 years ago," the England boss joked.

Norway's veteran coach Even Pellerud, 61, guided the team to their sole World Cup triumph in 1995. And they are unbeaten so far in this World Cup, having enjoyed comfortable wins over debutants Thailand and Ivory Coast.

Women's World Cup

England boss Mark Sampson said he will strike a careful balance between attack and defence against Norway in their last 16 game, having seen his team produce their most fluid performance in their last group game against Colombia.

"Norway are really well organised, fit, strong, determined, and if they can't find a way on the floor they'll put the ball in the air," Sampson said.

"We'll have to manage that threat, but we've got good experience. [Centre-backs] Steph Houghton, Laura Bassett and Casey Stoney have probably headed more balls in the last two games than they have all season."

Women's World Cup

Juventus sign Mandzukic

Juventus have signed Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic from Atletico Madrid for £13.6m.

The 29-year-old only joined Atletico last summer from Bayern Munich and scored 20 goals in 43 games for the Spanish side.

He has agreed a four-year deal with the beaten Champions League finalists, who said the fee could rise to £15m.

Dart loses out in Eastbourne

British teenager Harriet Dart has been beaten in the first round of the Aegon International in Eastbourne by the 2014 Australian Open finalist, Dominika Cibulkova 6-1 6-3.

Cibulkova, the world number 49, is playing in her first tournament since February having had surgery on her achilles.

Dart, 18, was given a wildcard into the main draw at Eastbourne and has received a wildcard in to the qualifying draw for Wimbledon.

Women's World Cup

England go into their last-16 tie in Ottawa on Monday evening at the Women's World Cup having qualified second behind France in Group F.

After losing to the side ranked third in the world, England recovered with consecutive 2-1 victories over Mexico and Colombia.

The Welshman, who has used all 20 outfield players so far, introduced Jodie Taylor for the final nine minutes against Colombia after she had knee surgery eight weeks ago.

However, Taylor and Jordan Nobbs, who also featured against Colombia after returning from a hamstring problem, both missed England's final training session on Sunday.

Hibs mascot gives thumbs down to Kingsley

The new Partick Thistle mascot Kingsley has certainly been attracting a lot of attention since his launch - and not all of it good.

He might have expected a bit of solidarity from Hibs mascot Sunshine the Leith Lynx but the Edinburgh club tweeted a picture which shows that Sunshine is as appalled as many of you at what Partick have given to the mascot world.

Marsh vows Australia will be 'aggressive'

Australia batsman Shaun Marsh says his side will play with aggression in the forthcoming Ashes Series but insists they will not overstep the mark.

The last Ashes series in the winter of 2013/14 had a number of flashpoints with Michael Clarke charged by the International Cricket Council for swearing at England bowler Jimmy Anderson.

"I think it is really important to get out there and show your aggression and put your stamp on the game - that is the Australian way," said Marsh.

"It is an Ashes series and I am sure there will be sledging from both teams, but I am also sure it will be in the spirit of the game. We're looking forward to getting out there and putting it right up to them."

Hafeez facing second ban

Pakistan off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez has been reported for a suspected illegal bowling action for the second time in less than a year and could face a 12-month ban from the sport.

The International Cricket Council said in a statement that match officials in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle raised concerns about Hafeez's action in a report handed to Pakistan's team management.

Hafeez was banned from bowling in December after tests showed he was extending his elbow more than the permitted limit. He was cleared to bowl in April after remedial work.

The ICC said in its statement that Hafeez will need to undergo another test and if his bowling action is proven to be illegal again, he will be given a year-long ban from bowling.

Strettle pulls out of England squad

Winger David Strettle has withdrawn from England's World Cup training squad and will be replaced by Bath Rugby's Semesa Rokoduguni.

The 31-year-old, who won the Premiership title with Saracens last month, will join French club Clermont Auvergne next season and decided to pull out of the squad before they assembled ahead of the World Cup.

Benitez promises more signings for Real

New Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez has said Real Madrid will be bringing in more reinforcements this summer, but has not divulged who they might be or which players might be on their way out.

"Of course there will be," Benitez told his club's official website, when asked about new arrivals.

"But let me just say that to improve the current Real Madrid side is enormously difficult.

"This team has won it all and has proved the level it has. The fans can be certain that the team will have the level of competitiveness that this club demands."

"Not sure Firmino is on the radar," Simon says. "Am pretty sure United could get Fabinho from Monaco if they wanted him but that might not become completely apparent until after Copa America, by which time alternative targets might emerge.

"The other thing nobody is mentioning is who makes way. United already have two right-backs in Antonio Valencia and Rafael. Of those, Rafael is the most vulnerable. Van Gaal may want to create some room before risking having a squad that is far too big."

Stone inspires Northants victory

Pace bowler Ollie Stone produced a career-best 5-44 as Northants beat Kent to register their second Championship win of the summer in Division Two.

The 21-year-old was well supported by Rory Kleinveldt, whose 3-44 gave him match figures of 8-85.

Kent's second innings only lasted 38.5 overs and Northants knocked off the 46 needed for victory for the loss of Rob Newton and Ben Duckett.

Canaries confirm Mulumbu deal

Premier League newcomers Norwich City have agreed to sign DR Congo midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu on a two-year contract.

The 28-year-old's move to Carrow Road will go through on 1 July when his current deal with West Brom expires.

"The fact that we've been able to pick Youssouf up on a free transfer is a fantastic piece of business," boss Alex Neil told the Norwich website.

Bedene wins at Nottingham

There has been mixed news for the Britons at the Aegon Open in Nottingham.

British number two Aljaz Bedene has reached the second round after defeating Argentina's Diego Schwatzman 6-1 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.

Next up for the 25-year-old Slovenian-born player, who was granted UK citizenship in March, is eighth-seeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

But British number three Kyle Edmund is out after losing to Malek Jaziri 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5).

Gloucestershire made to follow-on at Bristol

"Graham Napier wrapped up the Gloucestershire tail taking four of the last five wickets, including the last three, all bowled, in the space of five deliveries.

"Youngster Jamie Porter underlined his huge potential, his three wickets barely describing how well he bowled.

"Following on, Napier soon dismissed Chris Dent and Porter promptly removed Will Tavare.

Four years ago in the World Cup in Germany, France beat England on penalties in their quarter-final having drawn 1-1 after extra-time.

Boss Mark Sampson says he knows who would be taking penalties should tonight's game with Norway go that far.

"I've been very successful over the course of my career with penalties as a coach," he said.

"We've assessed their techniques, their character and their personalities. I will take responsibility deciding which players take them and they will have my full backing to go and do their best."

Premier new boys sign Distin

Newly-promoted Bournemouth have agreed a deal in principle to sign defender Sylvain Distin.

The 37-year-old left Everton when his contract expired at the end of the season.

Distin is still to have a medical but it is not anticipated there will be any barrier to the deal going through.

If he does sign, Bournemouth will become Distin's fifth Premier League club after previous spells with Newcastle, Manchester City, Portsmouth - where he won the FA Cup in 2008 - and Everton.

Glamorgan's Wagg continues to shine with bat

"Leicestershire's bowlers took wickets at regular intervals through the afternoon session as Chris Cooke led the Glamorgan resistance with a valuable 84.

Colchester sign defender Briggs

League One side Colchester United have signed former loanee Matthew Briggs following his release by Millwall.

The 24-year-old former Fulham left-back played 18 times for the U's last season as they avoided relegation to League Two with a final-day win over Preston.

McDonnell to miss rest of season

St Helens full-back Shannon McDonnell will miss the rest of the season after snapping his Achilles tendon.

The 27-year-old, who rejoined Saints in April after a brief spell with the club last season, suffered the injury late in their Super League loss at Castleford last Thursday.

He will now have surgery and faces between four and seven months of rehabilitation.

But winger Adam Swift has been given the all-clear after being carried off on a stretcher in the same game with what looked like a serious injury.

Well Brentford now have one after the appointment of Flemming Pedersen.

The 52-year-old "will work as part of the first team coaching staff" and will be "responsible for setting out Brentford's football philosophy and structuring individual development plans for players".

New owners at Hartlepool

Hartlepool have confirmed recruitment company JPNG Global has completed its takeover of the club.

Previous majority shareholders Increased Oil Recovery, who took control in 1997, announced on Friday that it had sold Hartlepool and chairman Ken Hodcroft had stepped down with immediate effect.

Gary Coxall has been named as the new chairman. "It's a deal that we have been working on for the past three months," he said. "We're really pleased that it is completed and we can start to implement our plans."

Manager Ronnie Moore, appointed in December, led Hartlepool to an unlikely relegation escape in May after they turned around a 10-point gap to preserve their Football League status.

Parma must start at bottom

Bankrupt club Parma will have to play in the fourth tier of Italian football after no buyer was found by the deadline.

Parma's hopes of avoiding demotion to the amateur division were all but ended when former Major League Baseball player Mike Piazza pulled out of talks to buy the club.

In March, Parma were declared bankrupt with debts of more than 200 million euros.

The club finished bottom of Serie A last season.

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner has called for Formula One to turn to Ross Brawn in a bid to turn around its flailing fortunes.

F1 has been criticised for dull races, a lack of overtaking and an over-complicated rule book.

"It is the commercial rights holder and the governing body to decide what F1 should be and then put it on the table to the teams and say 'this is what we want the product to be, these are the rules, this is the entry form'," said Horner.

"Maybe you need an independent observer, someone not involved... someone like Ross Brawn that understands the challenges and knows the business."

St Helens lose McDonnell for season

St Helens full-back Shannon McDonnell will miss the rest of the season because of an Achilles injury.

McDonnell, 27, was hurt in the closing stages of Saints' 25-24 defeat by Castleford Tigers on Thursday.

Head coach Keiron Cunningham has confirmed McDonnell will undergo surgery on the injury and return next season.

When Rafa Benitez was being interviewed about the Real Madrid job, I imagine he was prepared for questions about tactics and player acquisition, but perhaps not the size of his waist.

Stoke striker Bojan Krkic says he hopes to be fit for the start of the new season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in January.

The 24-year-old former Barcelona player has undergone an extensive rehabilitation programme in his native Spain and believes he is on course to be ready for Stoke's opening Premier League game against Liverpool on the weekend of 8-9 August.

"I feel better, it's been four and a half months from that knee injury," he told Italian newspaper Corriere Dello Sport. "Now I'm enhancing muscle tone and I hope to return in time for the start of the season."

Volvo Ocean Race reaches climax

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, skippered by Briton Ian Walker, has won the Volvo Ocean Race.

They secured victory after finishing fifth in the ninth and final leg of the 38,739-nautical mile, nine-month offshore race which brought the crews to Gothenburg, Sweden.

The crew secured top-three podium places in all but two of the legs and won two of them.

More on the news that Petra Kvitova has pulled out of the Aegon International at Eastbourne because of illness.

"I wanted to play but it doesn't really make sense to play and not be ready for Wimbledon," said Czech top seed Kvitova.

"I didn't need antibiotics so that's a good sign. But I have to be in bed and drink hot tea, just lying and resting."

The weather has had an impact on today's County Championship programme with no play possible before lunch in the Division One fixtures between Middlesex and Worcestershire at Uxbridge, and Hampshire and Somerset in Southampton.

Middlesex are set to resume on 289-7, while at the Ageas Bowl, Somerset were 310-6 at the end of day one.

Tough place to go

Aberdeen face KF Shkendija of Macedonia in their Europa League tie and it could be lively.

Formed in 1979 so that Albanians throughout Yugoslavia could unite in supporting a club, Shkendija's fans are known as the Ballistet and are one of the most notorious supporter groups in Europe.

In 2010, for instance, they removed the Macedonian flag from a mast at the home of FK Napredok and put an Albanian one in its place. Cue a riot as the Ballistet tore out their seats and threw them as the police tried to intervene.

There have also been a string of other incidents including attacks on opposition players, throwing flares, and offensive banners.

Wakefield have signed New Zealand-born Samoa hooker Michael Sio from Mackay Cutters on an 18-month contract.

The 30-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Giants and will join up with the club for pre-season training in November.

Widnes 'soft' in Huddersfield loss

Widnes were too "soft" as they lost 30-22 to 12-man Huddersfield Giants on Sunday, says Vikings head coach Denis Betts.

Giants forward Brett Ferres was sent off after 12 minutes for punching Rhys Hanbury but the home side were unable to take advantage, conceding four tries in the second half.

Squash aims for 2020 inclusion

Maradona wants to be Fifa president

According to reports in South America, Diego Maradona wants to stand for the Fifa presidency to succeed Sepp Blatter.

The 54-year-old former Argentina captain and manager has been a long-time critic of Blatter but Uruguayan broadcaster and writer Victor Hugo Morales says he has decided to stand for the position

Morales tweeted: "I called Diego Maradona to check on his father's health. He told me that he would be a candidate for president of Fifa and that I was authorised to communicate it."

More on the news that Olympic champion Nicola Adams has guaranteed at least a European Games bronze medal by reaching the semi-finals of the flyweight competition.

The 32-year-old secured a split-decision victory over Bulgarian rival Stoyka Petrova ,who beat the British boxer at last year's European Union Championships.

"I knew I had it all to prove today, to be honest it should have been a finals [against her]," Adams told BBC Sport.

She will face 21-year-old Turkish boxer Elif Coskun in the semi-finals on Wednesday (10:00 BST).

"I'm here for gold, I'm hoping I can make history again and bring it back to Britain."

Tragedy at track

A 25-year-old female jockey has died from injuries sustained in a fall during a trotting race in France.

Christelle Zimmer landed heavily on her neck and back in Saturday's meeting at the Chartres race track.

Zimmer received first aid at the track, with medical staff giving her CPR after she suffered a heart attack.

She was flown by helicopter to Rouen hospital, but also suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and did not recover, sport organisers LeTrot said.

Franklin century rescues Middlesex

A century from captain James Franklin rescued Middlesex on day one of their County Championship Division One game against Worcestershire at Uxbridge.

The home side were struggling at 51-4 but the former New Zealand all-rounder hit 135 and shared 170 for the sixth wicket with John Simpson to help them to 289-7 by the close.

At the Ageas Bowl, Somerset will resume day two on 310-6 against Hampshire thanks to half-centuries from Marcus Trescothick, Tom Abell and James Hildreth.

Reigning champions Yorkshire start their match against Nottinghamshire at Headingley this morning.

Manchester United are pushing to sign defender Sergio Ramos, 29, from Real Madrid as part of a deal that will see goalkeeper David De Gea, 24, move to Spain, according to the Independent.

Clutching at straws

Lewis Hamilton blamed losing the grand prix to team-mate Nico Rosberg on a technical problem with his car's start procedure.

Hamilton started from pole but made a slow start and was passed on the run to the first corner by Rosberg, who dominated the rest of the race.

"I did everything I was supposed to do but the clutch keeps under-performing," Hamilton said.

He said it was "something we need to work on" after a run of poor starts.

'Scary'

That crash between Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso was spectacular to say the least, with the latter's McLaren ending up on top of the Ferrari.

Alonso, who had slid along the top of the barrier before the cars came to a halt, described the incident as "scary".

The crash, which appeared to be caused by Raikkonen losing control of his car under power while Alonso was alongside on his outside, was investigated by stewards after the race, but no further action was taken.

Rosberg dominates

Nico Rosberg took a dominant victory in the Austrian Grand Prix to reduce Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton's lead in the World Championship.

Rosberg passed Hamilton at the start and controlled the race to the end.

Hamilton's attempt to re-pass on lap one was thwarted by the safety car, triggered by a heavy crash between Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren's Fernando Alonso.

Player dies after tackle

Some sad and shocking news from overnight, after a rugby league player seriously injured during a Queensland Cup match on Saturday died in hospital.

James Ackerman, 25, was playing for the Sunshine Coast Falcons when he suffered a head injury in a tackle five minutes into a game against Norths Devils.

The father-of-two was treated on the field, before being taken to hospital in Brisbane. The game was then abandoned.

Queensland Rugby League (QRL) managing director Robert Moore said: "One of the strengths of rugby league is the game's ability to rally behind its own - and I have no doubt this will happen throughout this challenging period."

Last week, we had the fixtures for the new season and today it's the draw for the opening rounds of both the Champions and Europa League (from 11:00 BST).

Northern Ireland's Crusaders and Wales' The New Saints will discover their first qualifying-round opponents in Europe's premier club competition, and Celtic will be included in the second-round draw.

West Ham, meanwhile, will find out their first Europa League opponents, as will Aberdeen and St Johnstone from Scotland, Northern Ireland's Linfield, Glenavon and Glentoran, and Welsh trio Bala Town, Airbus UK Broughton and Newtown.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle will be in the second-round draw.

Brazil battle through

Let's switch to events at the Copa America, where Thiago Silva and Roberto Firmino scored in each half against Venezuela to seal Brazil's place at the quarter-final stage.

Silva volleyed home a corner from Robinho - starting in place of Neymar following his tournament ban - early on before Firmino converted Willian's cross, with former Celtic striker Miku scoring a consolation.

Brazil will now face Paraguay in the tournament quarter-finals on Saturday.

Colombia and Peru also qualified after drawing earlier in the day.

Murray also won the Queen's title in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and will hope to repeat his effort of two years ago when he went on to make it a grass-court double at Wimbledon.

"It's great preparation obviously, but it has only happened six times where someone has won Queen's and gone on to win Wimbledon," Murray added.

"There are no guarantees that winning here gives you a Wimbledon title."

No stopping Murray

Andy Murray is all set for Wimbledon after joining the likes of John McEnroe and Boris Becker as a four-time Queen's Club champion.

The British number one played superbly to beat South African Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-4 in 64 minutes at the Aegon Championships in London.

It was a busy day for Murray, the top seed, who had earlier finished a rain-delayed semi-final, beating Viktor Troicki 6-3 7-6 (7-4).

"I played better as the week went on and hopefully I can continue that into Wimbledon," the 28-year-old said.

McIlroy falters

How did world number one Rory McIlroy fare?

Well, he posted six birdies in his opening 13 holes, including an incredible 72-foot putt, and looked as though he was on course to threaten the leaders.

But then a few dropped shots halted his progress and his 66 left him level par for the tournament, five shots behind Spieth.

"It just wasn't meant to be, I didn't play the last few holes well all week," he told BBC Sport.

"It's going to take a few days to get over it but when I look back on it I'll be happy about it - a few missed putts will have made the difference."

Spieth clearly doesn't need to work on improving his golf game, but he does perhaps needs lessons in how to hold a trophy.

Spieth remains on course to become the first player to win all four majors in a calendar year, and also became the youngest player to win the US Open since Bobby Jones in 1923.

"It's cool to be able to have two legs of the grand slam now, and to conquer golf's hardest test - the US Open is conquering the hardest layout in all of golf," Spieth said.

Splendid Spieth

First to America, where Jordan Spieth - a man so young he'd struggle to buy alcohol at a supermarket without ID - is celebrating after winning the US Open after a thrilling climax at Chambers Bay.

The 21-year-old carded a one-under 69 to win his second major of 2015 by one shot on five under after Dustin Johnson three-putted the last from 12 feet.

South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen sank six birdies in his last seven holes as he hit 67 to tie Johnson for second.

What a nice boy Spieth is too, posing with his parents and brother in his moment of victory.
