Sneyd given two-game ban

Hull half-back Marc Sneyd has been handed a two-match ban after being found guilty of a dangerous tackle on Leeds scrum-half Danny McGuire during Sunday's 32-20 Super League defeat at Headingley.

The suspension rules the former Salford and Castleford player out of Hull's return clash with Leeds in the Challenge Cup quarter-final at the KC Stadium on Friday as well as next Wednesday's re-arranged league game at Wakefield.

McGuire is also set to sit out the Cup tie but scans have cleared him of a break.

Tudgay agrees new Coventry contract

Coventry City striker Marcus Tudgay has signed a new one-year contract with the League One side.

The 32-year-old scored four goals in 23 games last season as Tony Mowbray's side finished 17th in the third tier, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Baghdatis is a hit on and off court

After reading the BBC East Midlands Today weather, Marcos Baghdatis made a good start his campaign at the Aegon International event in Nottingham, beating top seed David Ferrer of Spain 6-2 7-6 (7-4).

It was the first win for the Cypriot against a Top 10 player in two years and he sent down nine aces and converted over 70% of his service points.

Australian front-rower Ashton Sims has told the BBC Super League Show that Warrington Wolves need to start playing to potential after a 'clear the air' team meeting on Monday.

"We've talked the talk, now we need to walk the walk," ex-Newcastle Knights prop said ahead of Saturday's last eight Challenge Cup tie against Leigh.

Cathro, 28, recently left Valencia for family reasons after moving to Spain with coach Nuno Espírito Santo from Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2014.

McClean on Premier return

Republic of Ireland midfielder James McClean has told the BBC he is happy to be back in the Premier League following his move to West Bromwich Albion from Wigan Athletic.

'Hanging by a thread'

Italy Under-21s midfielder Danilo Cataldi admits their European Championship chances are "hanging on by a thread" heading into the England match.

The Azzurri lost 2-1 to Sweden in their opening game and will only go through to the knockout stage if they beat England and Sweden lose to Portugal.

"Our future is hanging by a thread, it won't be easy but we are ready," said Lazio midfielder Cataldi.

"We have to face England with one single goal... victory."

Asked about the success of England at the Women's World Cup, Southgate said he and his players were using it as an inspiration.

"I've spent some time around their camp because they are at St George's when I'm in my office," he said.

"They have a really good environment and Mark Sampson has done a great job in building that.

"They lost their first game as you often do in major tournaments, but they've come back and that is a good example for us."

Southgate's Under-21s lost to Portugal in their opening game but recovered to beat Sweden in their next game. Their final group match is against Italy on Wednesday - full coverage on the BBC Sport website.

Everton defender John Stones is available again after a head injury. Asked if that was a bonus, Southgate joked: "We are never sure with Stones whether he is still groggy or not so I don't quite know how the doc works it out!"

The boss added: "John is fit and available and he is a top player so I have a decision to make in that respect because we've only let one goal in and the defenders have defended with great heart and spirit and that's why we've got to the point we have."

England are second in their group at the European Championships, level on points with Sweden. They play Italy on Wednesday in their final group match and need a win to be guaranteed of going through to the semi-finals.

Asked about the lack of goals so far - England have only scored one in their first two games at the tournament - Southgate said: "Nobody has managed to win two matches and we are in the last eight of major competition - so there shouldn't be a lot between the teams and you have to earn everything you get.

"We haven't missed glaring chances so we need to look at whether we have created enough.

"We are three games away from the opportunity to be European Champions so we will discuss how we can get better because we need to be better."

Burke sets Derbyshire tough target

James Burke's crucial innings of 73 for Surrey has left Derbyshire with a tougher run-chase than they might have expected.

At lunch, the visitors were only 198 ahead with half of their wickets gone, but Burke hit a six and 11 fours in a career-best score before he was the ninth man dismissed.

Paceman Mark Footitt finished with 4-102, with Derbyshire requiring 348 to register their third Championship win of the summer.

Four medals for GB swimmers in Baku

Great Britain have won a third gold medal in the pool at the European Games in Baku.

The 4x100m freestyle relay team of Duncan Scott, Martyn Walton, Daniel Speers and Cameron Kurle claimed victory to follow the earlier successes of Abbie Wood (400m medley) and Holly Hibbott (800m freestyle).

There was also bronze for the women's freestyle relay team of Darcy Deakin, Madeleine Crompton, Hannah Featherstone and Georgia Coates.

Leics close in on Glamorgan first innings score

Five athletes eligible for GB

British Athletics has announced that five new athletes have been declared eligible to compete for GB with immediate effect.

Among them are 100m hurdler Cindy Ofili, the younger sister of European champion Tiffany Porter, and 100 and 200m teenage sprinter Zharnel Hughes from Anguilla.

Hughes recently finished second to Usain Bolt over 200m at the Diamond League meeting in New York.

The others are high jumper Victoria Dronsfield, 400m hurdler Shante Little and 400m runner Montene Speight.

Zinedine Zidane has revealed he would have accepted the chance to replace Carlo Ancelotti as Real Madrid coach had he been offered the job.

Zidane, one of Ancelotti's assistants as well as coaching Real Madrid's reserve side Castilla last season, lost out to Rafael Benitez in the race for the top job.

Vidal payment snubbed

A charity in Chile that campaigns for the victims of drink-drive accidents has rejected a payment offered to them by Arturo Vidal, the national team's star midfielder who crashed after drinking last week.

Vidal was arrested after the incident, which occurred when his Ferrari left the road in Santiago - but was later released and has continued to play for Chile in the ongoing Copa America tournament in the country.

After admitting in a statement that he had "taken two drinks, then had an accident", Vidal pledged any money he received as a reward for his performances in the Copa America would go to the Emilia Foundation charity.

However, the charity has said it would not accept any payments from Vidal - at least until the legal process ends.

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says he is as hungry as when he was a teenager as he attempts to bounce back from a below-par last season.

President arrested

It has emerged that Catania president Antonino Pulvirenti is one of seven people arrested over suspected match-fixing involving some of the Italian Serie B club's matches.

Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino is fined £28,500 by an Italian court for non-payment of taxes on a four-wheel drive he imported from the USA to Sardinia.

The Football League is waiting for official confirmation of the court's ruling before deciding on whether to take action, Press Association Sport understands.

Cellino was banned from being involved until the end of the season after being found guilty of tax evasion in Italy, returning to his role in May.

Hearn wants Olympic Stadium disclosure

Full details of West Ham's "secret" deal as tenants of the Olympic Stadium should be made public, says former Leyton Orient chairman Barry Hearn.

The cost of transforming the venue into a stadium ready for football has reached £272m.

West Ham will contribute £15m but the rent they will pay - reported to be £2m a year - has not been made public.

"Who is it confidential from? I can't see any reason whatsoever why it should be secret," Hearn told BBC Sport.

Hearn, chairman of Orient for nearly 20 years until selling up in 2014, wanted the club to groundshare the Olympic Stadium with West Ham and lost out in a legal battle to have the bidding process overturned.

Rangers sign Wigan's Kiernan

Rangers have secured the signature of Wigan Athletic's Rob Kiernan, hours after Danny Wilson became Mark Warburton's first signing as manager.

Wigan had already agreed a fee for 24-year-old Kiernan, who has signed a two-year contract, while fellow defender Wilson, 23, had decided to leave Hearts.

John Eustace could become their third signing after arriving in Glasgow for talks with the Ibrox club.

The midfielder, 35, was released by Derby County earlier this month.

Surrey struggle to build lead

Derbyshire picked up three Surrey wickets on the third morning to keep the match in the balance at the County Ground.

The visitors extended their lead to 198 for the loss of Dean Elgar, Dominic Sibley and Ben Foakes.

The latter was bowled by Mark Footitt, named in England's Ashes training squad, who cleaned up Surrey's openers in similar fashion on day two.

Hampshire facing Somerset defeat

Hampshire lost three early wickets at the Ageas bowl against Somerset, before Adam Wheater and Will Smith steadied things with an unbroken stand of 74 to take the hosts to lunch.

Lyth falls cheaply against Notts

"Stuart Broad then had England team-mate Adam Lyth lbw with his third delivery, with a ball which kept low, and Hilfenhaus claimed his first Championship wicket for Notts when he got rid of Gary Ballance for 14."

GB draw with Ireland

Great Britain's men squandered an early two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Ireland at the World League Semi-final in Belgium.

Captain Barry Middleton opened the scoring after just five minutes when his cross was deflected in by Ireland's John Jackson before a cross-shot from Mark Gleghorne, facing brother Paul in the Irish team, was expertly deflected in by Chris Griffiths.

But Kyle Wood pulled a goal back before Jackson levelled it to leave GB with two points from two games.

The 37-year-old, who was at Palmeiras, joins FC Goa, managed by another Brazilian great Zico.

Polish defender Jaroslaw Fojut has left Dundee United to join Pogon Szczecin in his homeland.

Fojut, 28, has signed a three-year deal with the Ekstraklasa side. His family had already returned to Poland, having failed to settle in Scotland.

After spending a year in Norway with Tromso, Fojut joined United on a two-year deal in 2014 and made 39 appearances, scoring five times.

Vieira rates Sterling

Manchester City's football development executive Patrick Vieira believes the club's interest in Liverpool striker Raheem Sterling is understandable.

City have already had two offers - the latest worth £40m - rejected but reports suggest they are preparing a third for the England international who has refused to sign a new £100,000-a-week contract, at £50m-plus.

"I think if you go down and ask 10 people what they think about him, I think nine would give you a positive answer," Vieira told ESPN FC at an event in New York.

"I would be part of the nine people because he's shown how good he is, how well he's been doing at Liverpool. If he is in the market, not just City would be interested in him."

Leicestershire make solid progress

Slovenian-born Aljaz Bedene, who switched allegiance earlier this year, was the only Brit to make the second round after James Ward's exit earlier today.

But Bedene was unable to reach the next stage, going down 6-7 4-6 against France's eighth seed Adrian Mannarino.

Liverpool chase Copa America trio

Leicester Tigers have signed Dom Barrow from Newcastle Falcons after the second-row forward activated a release clause in his contract.

The 22-year-old was in the England U20 side that won the 2013 World Junior Championship and played 37 games for Falcons after joining in 2013.

Director of rugby Dean Richards told Newcastle's website he was "bitterly disappointed" Barrow had left.

Rivaldo to return at 43

World Cup winner Rivaldo is considering coming out of retirement at the age of 43 - to help pull struggling Mogi Mirim off the bottom of the Brazilian second division.

Rivaldo, president of the provincial club, said: "Once again, I will sacrifice my family for the good of the club but I hope to see our team in a more worthy situation in the competition.

"I stopped played professionally 15 months ago but, if my knee is OK, I could help in some games."

Rivaldo, of course, helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup, during which competition he famously got hit in the chest - sorry, face, of course it was the face - by the ball.

British number four James Ward will not join compatriot Aljaz Bedene in the Aegon Open second round after losing his rain-delayed match against American Tim Smyczek in Nottingham.

Ward, 28, loses 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 1-6 after the pair resumed at 6-1 4-5 this morning.

The Londoner survived three set points at 5-6 in the second before Smyczek, 27, levelled by winning the tie-break. And the world number 72, ranked 38 places above Ward, won the first four games of the final set before sealing victory.

He said: "I'm obviously disappointed. I'll go back and watch the match, see what went wrong, move on from there, brush up and get ready for next week."

Simpson retains World Cup hope

Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson remains hopeful of staking a claim to be in England's World Cup squad after recovering from a knee injury.

The 26-year-old strained his medial collateral ligament in the 26-21 defeat by Leicester in May, which caused him to miss the last game of the Premiership season and also cost him a place in Stuart Lancaster's 45-man summer training squad, but he is back in training.

"I'm just hoping I get the call from England to show what I can do in training to give myself a chance to make the World Cup squad," he told the Wasps official website.

Horner vows to stay on at Red Bull

Red Bull principal Christian Horner has shrugged off speculation about his future and said he is determined to stay on to help the troubled Formula One team resolve their problems.

According to reports in The Times, one of Horner's rival principals had called him on Sunday morning, before the Austrian Grand Prix, to commiserate about his supposed departure.

The unidentified boss had been given the impression that Austrian Gerhard Berger, a former McLaren and Ferrari driver who is close to Red Bull's billionaire owner Dietrich Mateschitz, was set to replace the Briton.

"I was shocked," Horner said. "I had no idea people were talking about me that way. I have a long contract with the team. It is difficult but I had dinner with Dietrich on Saturday evening and we still get along very well. We know we have problems but we just have to work through them and I am here to do that job."

Budapest set to enter 2024 Games race

Budapest's city council has approved the launch of a bid to host the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

The idea will now pass to the Hungarian parliament in July where keen sports fan and Prime Minister Viktor Orban is likely to ensure it passes.

Cities have until 15 September to enter bids and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make a decision at a congress in Lima, Peru on 15 September 2017.

Boston, Rome and Hamburg are already lobbying for IOC votes, while Paris, Baku and Doha are tipped to enter the race.

Millwall sign Archer and Martin

League One side Millwall have signed Tottenham goalkeeper Jordan Archer on a two-year contract and left-back Joe Martin on a one-year deal.

Unfortunately it hasn't gone to plan for the 28-year-old Londoner, who now faces a deciding set in this first-round tie.

The pair resumed at 6-1 4-5 about 20 minutes ago, with Ward having to survive three set points at 5-6 to force a tie-break.

However, 27-year-old Smyczek eventually took his chance, winning the tie-break 7-3 to level.

Former England cricketer Chris Lewis was recently released from prison after serving less than half of a 13-year sentence for drug smuggling.

BBC sports editor Dan Roan has spoken to Lewis and finds out how he is trying to rebuild his life and help others.

"It was unfathomable. But pretty soon afterwards after going back to my cell and having a cry you go: 'I am going to have to deal with this.'

"Sometimes a typical day was 23 hours locked up. That was really challenging. You're in a jail and there can be 1,000 men running around, testosterone, and everything else. It's not exactly a holiday camp."

De La Hoya considers return

Boxing great Oscar De La Hoya says he is "very serious" about making a return to the ring at the age of 42.

The American, a former six-weight world champion, retired in 2009 after losing to Manny Pacquiao in his last fight.

Since retiring, De La Hoya has become a boxing promoter but has also battled alcohol and drugs addictions.

"I don't have to come back for financial reasons or the lights or the glamour," he told ESPN. "I'm training. I feel great. But it has to be worth my while. Would I do it? I don't know but I wake up every morning thinking that I can."

Second chance for youngsters

Here's an unusual one. Exeter City have offered trials to every Torquay United youth player released after the Gulls closed their academy last week.

Torquay closed their youth programme to save money after a new consortium took charge the club earlier this month.

Exeter are also hoping to offer chances to former coaches at Torquay.

"We are pleased that we are able to offer each of the boys a trial and a chance to become part of the club," said Simon Hayward of Exeter's academy.

Liverpool are "close to an agreement" for Brazilian playmaker Roberto Firmino, according to football website Globoesporte.

Arrests in match-fixing probe

Seven people have been arrested over suspected match-fixing involving Catania in Serie B, police have announced.

The seven are accused of "fraud in sporting competition... aimed at influencing the results and altering the outcome of (Serie B) matches in which Catania were involved, with the consequent victory for that team," police added.

Catania finished 15th in Serie B last season, three points above the relegation playoff places.

A 20-year-old player has been referred to the judiciary over a tackle involving prop forward James Ackerman, who later died in hospital.

Ackerman, a player with Brisbane club Sunshine Coast, was knocked unconscious in a tackle by Norths Devils' Francis Molo during a Queensland Cup match at the weekend and died 48 hours later.

Queensland Rugby League (QRL) said: "An incident involving Norths Devils player Francis Molo has been referred to the judiciary at a date to be confirmed."

The QRL has not provided any details of the charge Molo faces.

Galatasaray are ready to match 30-year-old striker Roberto Soldado's £2.2m annual salary if they can agree a transfer fee with Tottenham for the Spaniard, reports Talksport.

Change of heart

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who was set to leave the German club this summer, could stay on under new coach Thomas Tuchel, his agent says.

Germany international Gundogan had said in April he would not be renewing a contract that runs out in 2016, amid speculation of a move to the Premier League or Spain.

However, after the departure of coach Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season and the appointment of former Mainz coach Tuchel, the player's agent said Gundogan had "now been thinking about staying" after hearing Dortmund's plans for next season.

Becoming hostage to technology

Admit it, we've all done it. Sat at home, or on a train, or in the pub, staring aimlessly at our mobile phone.

But according to a leading sports charity, our obsession with handheld devices will lead to serious problems.

Future generations of young people risk becoming "hostages to handheld devices" and disengaged from physical activity,a report by The Youth Sports Trust says.

It suggests that nearly a quarter of children see playing computer games with friends as a form of physical activity.

Talks between the clubs are progressing towards the 33-year-old becoming Arsenal's first summer acquisition.

Ready for Canada

England, who have not been past the quarter-finals in three previous appearances at the World Cup, meet Canada in Vancouver at 00:30 BST on Sunday.

The hosts, who beat England 1-0 in a pre-tournament friendly, are managed by Englishman John Herdman.

"It's going to be a big game in front of a big crowd," added England boss Mark Sampson. "It's a special one to look forward to.

Brilliant Bronze

First to England's triumphant women, who took on Norway in the first knockout stage of the Women's World Cup and won, thanks to a stunning goal.

It was scored by Lucy Bronze, who fired into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Steph Houghton equalised with a header from a corner, before Bronze's super strike 14 minutes from time.
