England are second in their group at the European Championships, level on points with Sweden. They play Italy on Wednesday in their final group match and need a win to be guaranteed of going through to the semi-finals.
Asked about the lack of goals so far - England have only scored one in their first two games at the tournament - Southgate said: "Nobody has managed to win two matches and we are in the last eight of major competition - so there shouldn't be a lot between the teams and you have to earn everything you get.
"We haven't missed glaring chances so we need to look at whether we have created enough.
"We are three games away from the opportunity to be European Champions so we will discuss how we can get better because we need to be better."

Vidal payment snubbed
Jose Pinochet, BBC Mundo
A charity in Chile that campaigns for the victims of drink-drive accidents has rejected a payment offered to them by Arturo Vidal, the national team's star midfielder who crashed after drinking last week.

After admitting in a statement that he had "taken two drinks, then had an accident", Vidal pledged any money he received as a reward for his performances in the Copa America would go to the Emilia Foundation charity.
However, the charity has said it would not accept any payments from Vidal - at least until the legal process ends.

Rangers have secured the signature of Wigan Athletic's Rob Kiernan, hours after Danny Wilson became Mark Warburton's first signing as manager.

The midfielder, 35, was released by Derby County earlier this month.
Surrey struggle to build lead
Surrey 239 & 166-5, Derbyshire 207
Derbyshire picked up three Surrey wickets on the third morning to keep the match in the balance at the County Ground.
The visitors extended their lead to 198 for the loss of Dean Elgar, Dominic Sibley and Ben Foakes.
The latter was bowled by Mark Footitt, named in England's Ashes training squad, who cleaned up Surrey's openers in similar fashion on day two.
Hampshire facing Somerset defeat
Somerset 346, Hampshire 147 & 143-5 (f/o)
Hampshire lost three early wickets at the Ageas bowl against Somerset, before Adam Wheater and Will Smith steadied things with an unbroken stand of 74 to take the hosts to lunch.
However, they still trail by 56 and will need plenty of lower-order resistance to set Somerset any sort of target.
Wicketkeeper Wheater could be the key. He is unbeaten on 48.
"It was Nottinghamshire's morning as they fought their way back into the game, with first some lusty hitting and then two wickets before lunch.
"Luke Wood (38) and Ben Hilfenhaus (28 not out) swung the bat and put on 65 for the ninth wicket, the highest partnership of the innings.
"Stuart Broad then had England team-mate Adam Lyth lbw with his third delivery, with a ball which kept low, and Hilfenhaus claimed his first Championship wicket for Notts when he got rid of Gary Ballance for 14."
GB draw with Ireland
Hockey
Great Britain's men squandered an early two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Ireland at the World League Semi-final in Belgium.
Captain Barry Middleton opened the scoring after just five minutes when his cross was deflected in by Ireland's John Jackson before a cross-shot from Mark Gleghorne, facing brother Paul in the Irish team, was expertly deflected in by Chris Griffiths.
But Kyle Wood pulled a goal back before Jackson levelled it to leave GB with two points from two games.
"The end is nigh for Gloucestershire, who are only 24 head with three wickets left, despite a superbly crafted hundred from Michael Klinger, his fifth in 10 innings in all competitions this season.
"Ian Cockbain left a straight delivery from the first ball of the day, but Klinger and Geraint Jones added 69 before Klinger's masterful knock was ended when he could not evade a short ball from Ryan ten Doeschate.
"Jones fell for a honey trap 10 minutes before lunch when he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Aron Nijjar and Jack Taylor then compounded Gloucestershire's misery when he was out on the last ball before lunch."

Manchester City's football development executive Patrick Vieira believes the club's interest in Liverpool striker Raheem Sterling is understandable.
City have already had two offers - the latest worth £40m - rejected but reports suggest they are preparing a third for the England international who has refused to sign a new £100,000-a-week contract, at £50m-plus.

Remember that other debate we are having? Tis this... What impact is our obsession with handheld devices having on physical activity?
Here are some of your thoughts.
Neil Brookes: The cricket field where we played cricket, football, rounders etc as kids has long since been built on and not replaced. It's just collateral damage from an ever increasing population of a geographically small country.
Gavin Walker: Stop charging stupid money to play! Ever since this initiative to get more grassroots football the prices at football centres have gone sky high. Stupid! I remember when all you needed were a ball , some mates and jumpers! Can't even play on fields now cause they're all fenced off by schools and local authorities! Ridiculous!
James Bassett: Pah. It's no different from when I was little and being told to get my nose out of my books and get outside. Children are, by their very nature, obsessive about the here and now. They can't help it. Give them a break and stop telling them how useless they are.
Ward, 28, loses 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 1-6 after the pair resumed at 6-1 4-5 this morning.
The Londoner survived three set points at 5-6 in the second before Smyczek, 27, levelled by winning the tie-break. And the world number 72, ranked 38 places above Ward, won the first four games of the final set before sealing victory.
He said: "I'm obviously disappointed. I'll go back and watch the match, see what went wrong, move on from there, brush up and get ready for next week."
Meanwhile, Bedene is one set down in his second-round tie against French eighth seed Adrian Mannarino

The 26-year-old strained his medial collateral ligament in the 26-21 defeat by Leicester in May, which caused him to miss the last game of the Premiership season and also cost him a place in Stuart Lancaster's 45-man summer training squad, but he is back in training.
"I'm just hoping I get the call from England to show what I can do in training to give myself a chance to make the World Cup squad," he told the Wasps official website.

Red Bull principal Christian Horner has shrugged off speculation about his future and said he is determined to stay on to help the troubled Formula One team resolve their problems.
According to reports in The Times, one of Horner's rival principals had called him on Sunday morning, before the Austrian Grand Prix, to commiserate about his supposed departure.
The unidentified boss had been given the impression that Austrian Gerhard Berger, a former McLaren and Ferrari driver who is close to Red Bull's billionaire owner Dietrich Mateschitz, was set to replace the Briton.
"I was shocked," Horner said. "I had no idea people were talking about me that way. I have a long contract with the team. It is difficult but I had dinner with Dietrich on Saturday evening and we still get along very well. We know we have problems but we just have to work through them and I am here to do that job."

Gareth Southgate speaks to media

Vidal was arrested after the incident, which occurred when his Ferrari left the road in Santiago - but was later released and has continued to play for Chile in the ongoing Copa America tournament in the country.
After admitting in a statement that he had "taken two drinks, then had an accident", Vidal pledged any money he received as a reward for his performances in the Copa America would go to the Emilia Foundation charity.
However, the charity has said it would not accept any payments from Vidal - at least until the legal process ends.

"Arsenal are very close to having a squad that almost matches Chelsea and Manchester City. I think everybody knows Arsenal are minimum two, maybe three, good signings to really challenge Chelsea.
"He's 33 now, he still has five or six season of greatness in him and he is going to give Arsenal that assurance at the back that they really need.
"When a side wins the league it starts with the man at the back and usually when a side wins the league the goalkeeper usually has an amazing season."

"I have contacted the club to see if this affects his ownership status and the message back was that it seemed unlikely. Cellino was relaxed, I'm told, but no statement is expected from United.
"However, I understand that Cellino, along with others, has to appear in court on 14 September regarding an investigation into the construction of the IS Arenas stadium in Cagliari.
"Those charges include corruption, attempted corruption, unauthorised construction and non-compliance with a public authority order.
"So the obstacles to his continued running of the club are far from overcome it would seem."

Wigan had already agreed a fee for 24-year-old Kiernan, who has signed a two-year contract, while fellow defender Wilson, 23, had decided to leave Hearts.
John Eustace could become their third signing after arriving in Glasgow for talks with the Ibrox club.
The midfielder, 35, was released by Derby County earlier this month.

Surrey 239 & 166-5, Derbyshire 207

Hampshire facing Somerset defeat
Somerset 346, Hampshire 147 & 143-5 (f/o)
Hampshire lost three early wickets at the Ageas bowl against Somerset, before Adam Wheater and Will Smith steadied things with an unbroken stand of 74 to take the hosts to lunch.
However, they still trail by 56 and will need plenty of lower-order resistance to set Somerset any sort of target.
Wicketkeeper Wheater could be the key. He is unbeaten on 48.
Lyth falls cheaply against Notts
Nottinghamshire 224, Yorkshire 35-2
BBC Radio Nottingham's Chris Ellis at Headingley:

But Kyle Wood pulled a goal back before Jackson levelled it to leave GB with two points from two games.
Essex press for victory
Essex 319, Gloucestershire 116 & 227-7
BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Bob Hunt at Bristol:

Vieira rates Sterling
Football
Manchester City's football development executive Patrick Vieira believes the club's interest in Liverpool striker Raheem Sterling is understandable.
City have already had two offers - the latest worth £40m - rejected but reports suggest they are preparing a third for the England international who has refused to sign a new £100,000-a-week contract, at £50m-plus.
"I think if you go down and ask 10 people what they think about him, I think nine would give you a positive answer," Vieira told ESPN FC at an event in New York.
"I would be part of the nine people because he's shown how good he is, how well he's been doing at Liverpool. If he is in the market, not just City would be interested in him."

"Leicestershire skipper Mark Cosgrove hit a rapid 38 against his former club and looked unhappy to be given out, caught at short leg off spinner Andrew Salter.
"Opener Matt Boyce batted stolidly through the morning session to reach lunch on 46 not out."

Tigers sign Falcons forward Barrow
Rugby Union
Leicester Tigers have signed Dom Barrow from Newcastle Falcons after the second-row forward activated a release clause in his contract.
The 22-year-old was in the England U20 side that won the 2013 World Junior Championship and played 37 games for Falcons after joining in 2013.
Director of rugby Dean Richards told Newcastle's website he was "bitterly disappointed" Barrow had left.
Rivaldo to return at 43
Football
World Cup winner Rivaldo is considering coming out of retirement at the age of 43 - to help pull struggling Mogi Mirim off the bottom of the Brazilian second division.
Rivaldo, president of the provincial club, said: "Once again, I will sacrifice my family for the good of the club but I hope to see our team in a more worthy situation in the competition.
"I stopped played professionally 15 months ago but, if my knee is OK, I could help in some games."
Rivaldo, of course, helped Brazil win the 2002 World Cup, during which competition he famously got hit in the chest - sorry, face, of course it was the face - by the ball.

No decision yet on Cipriani
Rugby Union
England head coach Stuart Lancaster is awaiting the outcome of the police investigation into Danny Cipriani's drink-drive arrest before determining whether the fly-half is included in his World Cup squad.
England began their summer training camp on Monday without centre Manu Tuilagi and hooker Dylan Hartley, who will miss the tournament for disciplinary reasons.
Sale's Cipriani must wait until early August to discover the outcome of a police investigation into his arrest.
Lancaster said: "I've got no position at all on it at the moment. I'll deal with it as and when it's appropriate."
Konta on form in Eastbourne

While the British men toil at the Aegon Open in Nottingham, there is much better news about one of their female counterparts down in Eastbourne.
Johanna Konta, the 24-year-old British number three, is closing in on a memorable win against fourth seed Ekaterina Makarova at the Aegon International.

Ward out
Tennis
British number four James Ward will not join compatriot Aljaz Bedene in the Aegon Open second round after losing his rain-delayed match against American Tim Smyczek in Nottingham.
Simpson retains World Cup hope
Rugby Union
Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson remains hopeful of staking a claim to be in England's World Cup squad after recovering from a knee injury.

Horner vows to stay on at Red Bull
Formula 1

Ward faces deciding set in Nottingham

British number four James Ward would have been hoping for a quick break of serve - in between two holds of his own - to wrap up his rain-delayed match against American Tim Smyczek at the Aegon Open in Nottingham.
Unfortunately it hasn't gone to plan for the 28-year-old Londoner, who now faces a deciding set in this first-round tie.
The pair resumed at 6-1 4-5 about 20 minutes ago, with Ward having to survive three set points at 5-6 to force a tie-break.
However, 27-year-old Smyczek eventually took his chance, winning the tie-break 7-3 to level.

But according to a leading sports charity, our obsession with handheld devices will lead to serious problems.
Future generations of young people risk becoming "hostages to handheld devices" and disengaged from physical activity,a report by The Youth Sports Trust says.
It suggests that nearly a quarter of children see playing computer games with friends as a form of physical activity.

Brilliant Bronze
Football
First to England's triumphant women, who took on Norway in the first knockout stage of the Women's World Cup and won, thanks to a stunning goal.

Steph Houghton equalised with a header from a corner, before Bronze's super strike 14 minutes from time.
