Manchester United's England defender Phil Jones, 23, who joined the club from Blackburn in 2011, signs a new four-year contract.

Watson hits back at Wood jibe

Mr Watson is asked for his response, and in true Aussie spirit he replies: "I heard about it this morning. I can't remember it at all. I don't even know when it was.

"I'm normally not that impressed with bowlers bouncing me too much in the nets anyway. I just hope he knows how to be able to bat properly, because we've got a few fast bowlers as well who don't mind bowling quite fast, so it'll be interesting to see how he goes."

Should be well worth listening to and it is all part of a packed programme with Mark Pougatch and Kelly Cates from 19:00 BST.

In 5 live Sport tonight at 21:30 BST there will be an interview with England fast bowler Mark Wood, who recalls bowling to Australia batsman Shane Watson in the nets.

Wood was instructed to bounce Watson by his Australia team mate Mike Hussey and says: "I let him have one, he gloved it and didn't give me the best of looks. Next ball, Hussey said 'give it him again', so I bumped him again and this time he absolutely smoked it.

"He picked up the ball, threw it back down the wicket at me and called me a 'net hero'."

Clubs to mark Stansfield anniversary

The number nine shirt at Exeter City remains retired in Stansfield's memory

Exeter City and Yeovil Town have confirmed they will mark the fifth anniversary of former striker Adam Stansfield's death when they meet on the first day of the League Two season.

Stansfield died from bowel cancer at the age of 31, with the sides' meeting coming two days before the anniversary.

The player spent three years with Yeovil and four seasons with Exeter.

There is set to be a minute's applause at St James Park on 8 August in both the seventh and ninth minutes of the match representing the numbers he wore with each club.

Dinner planned for day-night Test

We told you earlier about the first day-night Test match. In another break from tradition, the interval between the first and second sessions will be 20 minutes and be called tea instead of lunch. The second break in play would be 40 minutes and known as "dinner."

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon says he will not spend money he does not have and put the newly promoted club at risk.

Andy Mangan, Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Jermaine Grandison have not yet signed new contracts and may have to leave because the club are close to their budget.

"The pie is only so big, that's all I have," Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire. "I can't suddenly look behind Joe Hart's picture in the boardroom and find a bank vault with millions of pounds in it."

Kent batsman Daniel Bell-Drummond says scoring a century against Australia ranks as the best day of career.

The 21-year-old scored 127 off 112 balls on the final day of their tour match, which Australia won by 255 runs.

"It was a brilliant day. It's easily the best day of my life, cricket-wise," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"Normally I go nuts but when I hit the hundred I didn't know what to do. I was on another planet thinking 'what is going on?'."

He is surely likely to lose his place in the first team, but Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesney welcomes the signing of Petr Cech, at least publicly anyway.

The 25-year-old writes on his Facebook page: "Petr Cech, welcome to Arsenal FC! Delighted to have a chance to learn from one of the best GK's in the world!

Reading have completed the signing of 27-year-old former Fulham striker Orlando Sa on a three-year deal.

The Portuguese player moves for an undisclosed fee from Polish side Legia Warsaw, where he was the club's top league goalscorer last season.

Sa, who has also played for FC Porto and Nacional in Portugal, becomes the Royals' first summer signing.

Hewitt bows out at Wimbledon

All over for Lleyton Hewitt. He had saved three match points but the 34-year-old Australian wildcard's final Wimbledon appearance ends on the fourth with a 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-0 11-9 defeat against Finland's Jarkko Nieminen.

Australia-New Zealand to play first day-night Test

The first Test match was staged in Australia in 1877 and now Cricket Australia have confirmed they will play the first ever day-night Test match against New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval, beginning on 27 November, with a pink ball under floodlights.

Hewitt in final set classic

Aussie veteran Lleyton Hewitt is serving to stay in the match at 9-10 in the final set against Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, who is also making his final appearance at SW19.

Barbados out for fielding ineligible player

Barbados have been eliminated from the 2018 World Cup qualifying tournament and fined 6,000 Swiss francs for fielding an ineligible player against Aruba on 14 June.

Fifa ordered Barbados on Monday to forfeit their 1-0 win in the second leg of their second-round match and Aruba were awarded a 3-0 victory by default, meaning they advanced 3-2 on aggregate.

The Fifa disciplinary committee ruled that Barbados fielded Hadan Holligan, who scored the only goal in the 14 June match, when he should have served a one-match ban for receiving yellow cards in two previous games.

Sussex pile up huge total

It has been a painful day so far for Warwickshire, with four Sussex batsmen making centuries at Edgbaston.

After Chris Nash (121) and Luke Wright (110) fell to Jeetan Patel, Ben Brown (105) and Ashar Zaidi (101) have shared an unbroken sixth-wicket partnership of 182 to tea.

Patel has already sent down 47 overs in the innings, while fellow spinner Josh Poysden has endured a tough Championship baptism, with figures of 1-154 from 40 overs so far.

Everton Ladies midfielder Lucy Whipp, 19, has left the WSL 2 side after winning a place at a New York college.

The England Under-19 international scored two goals in 11 games this season.

Meanwhile, Gateshead midfielder Phil Turnbull, 28, is giving up full-time football to become a PE teacher at a school in Sunderland.

Arnason leaves Rotherham for Malmo

Rotherham defender Kari Arnason has joined Swedish top-flight side Malmo for an undisclosed fee.

The 32-year-old made 116 league appearances in three seasons with the Millers, helping them earn promotion from League Two to the Championship.

The Iceland international has signed a two-year deal with the Allsvenskan side.

Luton Town have made their sixth summer signing by capturing striker Josh McQuoid on a three-year deal after his release by Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old Northern Ireland international played 12 games and scored two goals during a loan spell at League One Coventry City last season.

McQuoid enjoyed two spells with the Cherries but failed to feature in their Championship title-winning campaign.

Boxing great Oscar De La Hoya has decided to stay retired after last week saying he was "very serious" about making a return to the ring at the age of 42.

De La Hoya, a former six-weight world champion, retired in 2008 after losing to Manny Pacquiao in his last fight.

Duckett ton bolsters Northants

Ben Duckett's 134 laid the foundation for a sizeable first-innings total by Northants on the opening day of their game against Division Two leaders Lancashire at Old Trafford.

The opener hit two sixes and 19 fours before falling lbw to left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan (2-54), who also accounted for Rob Keogh.

Skipper Alex Wakely made 56, and at tea, Richard Veil (24 not out) and Adam Rossington (22 not out) were approaching a 50 partnership.

Tykes in command

"It has been a day of records here as Yorkshire's Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan set a new County Championship seventh-wicket best with a stand of 366.

"It broke a record set in 1902 in a match between Sussex and Essex and it was also the highest stand for any wicket against Durham, who failed to take a wicket since play began and never really looked doing so.

"Bairstow made 219 not out and Bresnan 169 not out, both career bests and at tea, Durham were predictably struggling after losing both openers inside 10 overs."

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says Petr Cech is "one of the outstanding keepers in the world" after the Czech joined the Gunners from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

The 33-year-old made over 400 appearances during 11 years at Stamford Bridge, winning every major club honour at least once and the Premier League Golden Glove award on three occasions.

"Petr Cech is a player that I have admired for a long time and I am very pleased that he has decided to join us," said Wenger, who has paid in the region of £10m for the keeper.

Cech, who has signed a four-year deal, added: "When Arsene Wenger spoke to me about his ambitions for this club, and how he saw me as part of this team, the decision was clear."

Cech's message to Chelsea fans

New Arsenal keeper Petr Cech has written a letter to Chelsea fans, admitting he thought he would "finish his career" at Stamford Bridge.

However, after losing his starting position to Thibaut Courtois, he says he had to move on for "new challenges" because he is not at the stage of his career where he is happy to sit on the bench.

The Czech adds that he "couldn't be more proud" of what he achieved during 11 years at Chelsea but it is "time to begin a new adventure".

Queens Park Rangers have appointed Steve Gallen as first-team coach under boss Chris Ramsey.

Gallen, the brother of former QPR striker Kevin, has been on the club's academy coaching staff since 1997.

QPR were relegated after finishing bottom of the Premier League last season.

Meanwhile, goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock has left Loftus Road after turning down a new contract.

Paulinho leaves Spurs for China

Tottenham's Brazil international midfielder Paulinho, 26, who joined the Lilywhites from Corinthians for a fee of just under £17m in July 2013, has moved to Guangzhou for a reported £9.9m on a four-year contract, the Chinese club have confirmed.

They are managed by former Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari and are currently third in the league standings as they seek a fifth successive Super League title.

Accrington Stanleyhave signed Derby County goalkeeper Ross Etheridge on a free transfer.

The 20-year-old, who has agreed a one-year deal with the League Two side, failed to make a first-team appearance for the Rams after coming through the youth system.

"He's been in and around the Football League but has yet to make his debut so it's a big chance for him," manager John Coleman told the club website.

'England should target older Aussies'

Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie, who was interviewed for the England coaching job eventually given to Trevor Bayliss, has been talking to the Guardian about how to beat the Aussies.

He says he would target the more mature members of their squad, which he dubbed "Dad's Army".

"I'd keep those guys out there for a long time," the former Australia fast bowler said. "If Chris Rogers is out there for two days then has 10 minutes to strap on his pads and get his feet moving, could that work to England's advantage?

"Brad Haddin is 38 this year, so test his fitness. The same with Michael Clarke, he's had back problems. Ryan Harris, it's well documented he has a dodgy knee. It's just common sense."

Australia's world number 29 Nick Kyrgios, who knocked out Rafael Nadal last year, is already in to round two of this year's Wimbledon. He has beaten Diego Schwartzman 6-0 6-2 7-6 (8-6).

Discovery signs £922m Olympic deal

United States broadcasting giant Discovery, owner of Eurosport, has signed a £922m exclusive pan-European deal for broadcast rights to the Olympic Games.

In Britain, the rights cover the 2022 Winter Olympics and 2024 summer Games, whose venues are yet to be decided.

The Discovery chief executive, David Zaslav, told the Guardian that it would negotiate with the BBC and other broadcasters in the UK, France and Germany over potentially sub-licensing some of the rights.

"Part of our approach will be to strive to work with some of the best Olympic broadcast players. The BBC will have the chance to sub-licence some of the rights. We'll open up those discussions in every market," he said.

Wright century leads Sussex charge

Luke Wright struck his first Championship hundred of the season to put Sussex in control against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. The all-rounder made 110 off 204 balls before he was bowled by Jeetan Patel.

Earlier, Chris Nash could only add nine runs to his overnight 112 before he was stumped off Patel.

Ben Brown is currently unbeaten on 42 as the visitors look set to go past 500.

Notts make strong start

Notts opener Brendan Taylor continued his productive season with an unbeaten 55 as they made a solid start on the opening morning against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge.

The Zimbabwean shared an opening stand of 74 with Michael Lumb (26) before the latter fell to Jack Shantry and the visitors made a second breakthrough when Alex Hales (15) was bowled by Joe Leach.

Taylor reached his half century off 66 balls, with six fours, and has now scored over 600 Championship runs this summer.

Northants recover from slow start

Makeshift opener Ben Duckett hit an unbeaten 80 off 92 balls as Northants overcame a poor start on the opening morning against Division Two leaders Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Kyle Coetzer managed only a single before he was lbw to prolific wicket-taker Kyle Jarvis, but Duckett hit two sixes and nine fours in an unbroken stand of 138 with skipper Alex Wakely (47 not out) to lunch.

Hampshire fight back with morning wickets

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand at Lord's:

"Hampshire produced a stunning fightback on the second morning at Lord's to reduce Middlesex to 144-5.

"Having been skittled for 176, the visitors would have feared the worst when the hosts resumed on 59-0 this morning. But Hampshire's best bowling display this season made the most of the life still left in the layer of grass on top of the track.

"Nick Compton remains unbeaten on 42 and he'll hope to lead Middlesex to a minimum 100-run lead."

Gloucestershire continue to struggle

BBC Radio Gloucestershire's Bob Hunt at The Oval:

"Gloucestershire's miserable match continued on the morning of the third day as they were dismissed for 113 in their first innings, with Tom Curran picking up two more wickets to finish with a career best 7-20.

A theatre production company co-owned by the former Fifa presidential candidate Michael Van Praag is to stage a "musical black comedy" about Sepp Blatter.

The play, written and directed by Tom de Ket, is to be set around the days leading up to and after May's Fifa presidential election. Entitled "Fifa Blatter" it is due to be staged in Holland in 2016 or 2017.

Van Praag withdrew from the Fifa election in mid-May and backed Prince Ali of Jordan.

Derby County have appointed England Under-17 boss John Peacock to replace Paul Simpson as first-team coach.

Peacock worked as Derby's academy director for four years from 1998, but has spent 21 years at the Football Association either side of that spell. He is leaving the FA to take the Derby role.

"The chance to work once again at this fantastic club was an opportunity I couldn't decline," Peacock said.

The Rams have also named ex-Switzerland international Pascal Zuberbuhler, 44, as their goalkeeping coach.

Lamela to leave Spurs?

The Daily Mirror report that Tottenham are in talks with at least one Italian club, believed to be Juventus, to sell record £30m signing Erik Lamela.

Talks have opened with Galatasaray over £26m striker Roberto Soldado, 30, while other players signed in the 2013 spending spree - Paulinho, Etienne Capoue and Vlad Chiriches - are also available for transfer.

County Championship prospects - Division Two

Gloucestershire are in a tough position after two days against Surrey, needing another 197 to avoid the prospect of having to follow-on after being reduced to 102-7 at The Oval, with pace bowling prospect Tom Curran taking 5-17 so far.

Further north, leaders Lancashire will be looking for a seventh win of the season as they start a home game against Northants.

County Championship prospects - Division One

Defending champions Yorkshire will start two in a strong position against Division One leaders Durham after an unbroken stand of 138 between Jonny Bairstow (102) and Tim Bresnan (66) guided them to 329-6 at Chester-le-Street.

Middlesex will be looking to build a sizeable first-innings lead when they resume on 59-0 after bowling out Hampshire for 176, while Sussex are 280-3 against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, with Chris Nash on 112 not out.

Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire look to put last week's defeat by Yorkshire behind them as they start a home game against Worcestershire, but they must manage without Stuart Broad, who is away at England's pre-Ashes training camp.

Liverpool hopeful over Benteke

More Liverpool gossip, and the London Evening Standard report that the Reds remain hopeful they will be able to break the deadlock in their talks with Aston Villa for Christian Benteke.

The Standard claim Liverpool will not meet the £32.5m release clause and may look to offer players as part of the deal.

They add Liverpool are now unlikely to pursue Sevilla's £21m Colombian Carlos Bacca - who is destined for AC Milan instead.

Masoe to leave Saints for NRL

St Helens prop Mose Masoe will leave the club at the end of the season and move to NRL side St George Illawarra Dragons on a two-year deal.

The 25-year-old Samoa forward has been in every matchday squad for Saints since his debut in March 2014.

"We're sad to be losing Mose as he has been a popular member of the squad and at the hub of a pack," said Saints head coach Keiron Cunningham.

The Daily Mail report that Liverpool will consider offers for midfielder Lucas Leiva, the industrious 28-year-old Brazil international who has been at Anfield since 2007.

Former West Ham defender Julian Dicks joins new manager Slaven Bilic's backroom staff as a coaching assistant at Upton Park.

The 46-year-old, who had two spells with the Hammers and also played for Liverpool, moves across after a successful season in charge of West Ham United Ladies.

"I met up with Slaven last week and, although we had not met in person for a few years, it was like we had never been apart," Dicks said. "We had a hug and a kiss and sat down and talked all about West Ham and all about football."

It may have happened in the middle of the night, but England captured the imagination by making history on Sunday morning to reach the Women's World Cup semi-finals.

A peak audience of 1.6m watched England's quarter-final win over Canada on BBC One, even though the game kicked-off at 00:30 BST.

Before they face defending champions Japan in Thursday's semi-final, take a look back at the tears of joy and wild celebrations sparked by their 2-1 defeat of the hosts.

Wright-Phillips on target in NYC derby

It was a case of New York, New York last night as the city's soccer derby took place.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored for New York Red Bulls as they beat New York City FC 3-1 in Major League Soccer.

New York City, the franchise team of English side Manchester City where Wright-Phillips started his career, took the lead through Thomas McNamara.

Wright-Phillips equalised for the visitors just after the break before Chris Duvall put them in front and Matt Miazga secured the win.

Casey loses play-off to Watson

Paul Casey lost out in a play-off as two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson won his second Travelers Championship title in Connecticut.

Englishman Casey, 37, finished on 16 under with Watson but was beaten on the second play-off hole.

Casey hit a five-under-par 65 in the final round, while Watson shot a 67.

Both made par at the first play-off hole but then Casey found a greenside bunker with his approach on the second, before hitting his next shot into the crowd. That left Watson to sink a birdie putt to seal victory.

As if reaching the semi-final of a World Cup is not enough reason for celebration, England striker Fran Kirby also has a birthday to enjoy today. The Reading attacker is 22.

Today is also a special day for Simon Brown, the former Durham medium-pacer (46), former snooker player Anthony Hamilton (44) and former Newcastle, Leeds and Republic of Ireland defender Andy O'Brien (36).

Gatlin sets fifth-fastest 200m time in history

Justin Gatlin became the fifth-fastest 200m runner in history as he won Sunday's final at the United States Track and Field Championships.

The 33-year-old American, who has served two doping bans, recorded a time of 19.57 seconds in Oregon.

It bettered the 19.68 he ran in May which, at that stage, was the best in the world.

"I wanted to go out and make a statement, and that's what I did," Gatlin said.

Gatlin has been the dominant sprinter in 2015, having also achieved the quickest time in the 100m (9.74).

Grand Slam for Serena?

In the women's draw, top seed Serena Williams has a Grand Slam in sight.

The 33-year-old begins her campaign for a sixth Wimbledon title that would take her within sight of matching Steffi Graf's calendar Slam of 1988.

"I really don't feel that pressure," said the American, who has already won the Australian and French Opens in 2015.

"Maybe if I would happen to win here, then I might start feeling it."

Fourth seed Maria Sharapova takes on Johanna Konta, one of four Britons in action on day one, in the second match on Centre Court.

Back to Wimbledon and what may well be a testing afternoon for top seed Novak Djokovic.

The Serbian defending men's champion theoretically drew the toughest opponent he could face - 33rd-ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.

They open play on Centre Court at 13:00 BST, with action on the outside courts getting under way at 11:30 BST.

So is Phil Neville the new assistant manager at Valencia or not?

Apparently not. Despite the Spanish club announcing the appointment of the former England defender on their official website, it's not all sorted yet.

Neville has told the BBC that while talks are ongoing, there is a way to go before any deal is done.

The 38-year-old was a coach at Manchester United under David Moyes but has spent the past year working as a pundit for the BBC.

England, World Cups and optimism don't usually go together - at least once the tournament has started.

However, the Lionesses have no fears about facing reigning world champions Japan in their Women's World Cup semi-final on Thursday, according to defender Lucy Bronze.

England reached the last four for the first time in their history with a quarter-final victory over hosts Canada on Saturday.

Bronze, who scored in the 2-1 win, said: "Japan are the favourites, we know that, but we're confident. We know how we can beat them. England are going all the way."
