Football union helps skater

German speed skater Claudia Pechstein is to get financial backing from the world footballers' union as she bids to win damages after a doping ban.

The five-time Olympic champion has no connection to football, but Fifpro said her case highlighted its own concerns about the Court of Arbitration (CAS).

Pechstein, 43, was banned for two years in 2009 over irregular blood results, but she never failed a drugs test.

CAS rejected her appeal against the International Skating Union's ban, but in January, a Munich court ruled Pechstein could go ahead with a lawsuit demanding more than £2.8m in damages over lost earnings.

Haimona's Italy blow

Italy's World Cup preparations have been dealt a blow, with a setback for fly-half Kelly Haimona in his recovery from an arm injury.

Haimona broke his arm during Italy's final game of the Six Nations campaign against Wales in March, but the injury has not healed properly.

He has now left the Azzurri's World Cup training camp to continue his rehabilitation, having been told that he cannot do any contact work for the next 30 days.

Blades' Baxter given suspended drugs ban

Sheffield United midfielder Jose Baxter has been given a five-month ban for a failed drugs test.

Baxter was suspended by the club in May after he failed an out-of-competition test, but denied any wrongdoing.

The midfielder was found guilty at a Football Association personal hearing.

However the remaining three months of the ban have been suspended for two years so he is available for the Blades' first league game on 8 August.

From Cobra to Caldwell

On the same day boxer Carl Froch announced he is hanging up his gloves, Steven Caldwell has announced his retiring from football.

The former Scotland defender, 34, was captain of MLS side Toronto FC after playing in England for Newcastle, Sunderland, Burnley, Wigan and Birmingham.

QPR pre-season result

QPR have lost 1-0 to AS Monaco in a pre-season friendly in Chatillon, Italy.

The Loftus Road club shouldn't feel too bad though. They will receive 20% of the transfer fee for Raheem Sterling going to Manchester City. That's 20% of £49 million...

'Starc should be fine'

More team news ahead of the second Ashes test at Lord's on Thursday:

Mitchell Starc is winning his battle to be fit for the second Ashes Test at Lord's, says Australia captain Michael Clarke.

Starc took pain-killing injections for an ankle injury during last week's first-Test in Cardiff and has, according to the skipper, reacted "positively" to treatment ahead of the start of the second Test on Thursday.

"Spending a bit of time with the Australian physio, he's confident that, although it's a short turnaround before the second test, there's been a lot of positives that have come out of the last couple of days since he was cortisoned, and things are going really well there," Clarke told Melbourne radio station Triple M.

"Starcy obviously had some ankle pain and had an injection to bowl in the second innings, but the positive again was the fact he was able to bowl and do what was needed for the team."

Teenager Gray pens new deal with Birmingham

Birmingham City's teenage winger Demarai Gray has signed a new three-year contract at St Andrew's.

Birmingham-born Gray, 19, came through the academy system at the Championship club and made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in October 2013.

The England Under-20 international has played 52 times for Blues and scored seven goals, including a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Reading last December.

"It is our biggest signing of the summer so far," boss Gary Rowett said.

Curran takes five on debut

Surrey's teenage debutant Sam Curran took three more wickets in the afternoon session to finish with figures of 5-101.

The 17-year-old finally broke a seventh-wicket stand of 151 between Sam Billings and Calum Haggett when he trapped Billings lbw for 99. Haggett was the final man to go for 80, his highest first-class score, to give Curran his five-for as Kent were all out for 336.

Surrey began their first innings after tea and moved quickly to 37-0.

And another big bit of transfer news... Robin van Persie has officially completed his move from Manchester United to Fenerbahce for an undisclosed fee.

The Netherlands striker, 31, was unveiled in front of about 10,000 supporters inside the club's stadium.

He said: "I promise you one thing - I will do everything in my power to help Fenerbahce win as many trophies to make you happy. Let's do it together."

Van Persie spent three years at United, scoring 58 goals, after signing from Arsenal for £24m.

Speaking about his new signing, Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini described Sterling as "one of the best attacking players in world football".

Another fascinating session at Chester-le-Street saw Jamie Harrison's half-century rescue Durham from 55-7 to post 148 all out.

Coming in at number nine, Harrison hit 53 as he took Durham to a lead of 264. However, with conditions still tough for batting, Warwickshire face a difficult evening session to give themselves a chance on the final day.

Now, after almost a decade of highly paid foreign managers - era of Hiddink, Advocaat and Capello - Russian football authorities have decided to switch to home-grown coaches.

The RFU is planning to announce a new head coach within the next couple of weeks and they have already said he will be Russian.

The main candidate seems to be CSKA Moscow's coach Leonid Slutsky - called "the Russian Mourinho" - who led the club to back-to-back victories in the Russian league during last three seasons. However, Slutsky can only dream of a salary that Capello had.

As expected, the Russian Football Union (FRU) did not disclose the amount of compensation that Fabio Capello has will receive for the termination of his contract.

Some RFU bosses called it an unprecedented contract - both for its value and length - and said on Tuesday there has been "mutual agreement" on the parting but what concessions did Capello make?

Reports in Russia suggest the former England manager has received 15m euros (£10.7m) in compensation, meaning they managed to "save" about 8m euros that Capello was apparently due.

Kirby 'does not know' transfer fee

While Manchester City have been busy splashing out £49m on Liverpool's Raheem Sterling, last week England striker Fran Kirby joined Chelsea for what was reported to be a British women's record fee.

The transfer was reported to be worth between £40,000 and £60,000 - though Kirby says she's unaware of the figures involved.

"I'm not here to worry about the money," she said. "There is some pressure, but that comes with playing for a top side. I've just got to make sure I'm playing well."

BreakingJenkinson signs new deal

Full back Carl Jenkinson has signed a new contract with Arsenal and immediately re-joined West Ham United on loan.

Women's Super League must capitalise on England, says Moore

The Women's Super League "needs to capitalise" on England's recent success at the World Cup, says Birmingham midfielder Jade Moore.

The 24-year-old was part of Mark Sampson's squad, who finished third at the recent tournament in Canada.

Record crowds turned out on Sunday to watch the first domestic matches held since the players returned home.

"Everyone always says supporters come when you achieve something," she told BBC Sport.

Moses 'in Chelsea's plans'

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has hinted that Victor Moses may be in Chelsea's plans for the Premier League campaign after the Midlands club were unable to extend his loan spell at the Britannia Stadium.

The Nigeria international winger netted four goals in 23 appearances while on loan at Stoke last season.

"I think Chelsea have taken a view on Victor," said Hughes, in Singapore with Stoke for the Asia Trophy. "What they're thinking is that they would possibly like to keep him although if they go into the market again, they could change that idea.

Wimbledon sign Iron striker Taylor

League Two side AFC Wimbledon have signed Scunthorpe United striker Lyle Taylor for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old scored four goals in 25 appearances for the Iron last season, and spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Partick Thistle.

"I was interested in Lyle as soon as I heard that Scunthorpe might want to let him go," Dons boss Neal Ardley said.

The Herald are reporting that Celtic have wrapped the facade of their ground with the largest piece of stadium branding in the history of British football. The design wraps both ends of Parkhead and stands 21 metres tall and 202 metres long.

Moore wants 1,000 games as a manager

Ronnie Moore wants to reach the career milestone of 1,000 games as a manager and wants to achieve that feat while in charge of his current club Hartlepool.

Moore, 62, reached the 28th anniversary of his first managerial appointment at Tranmere in February this year.

He has since managed 857 matches during his career with Rovers, Rotherham, Oldham and Pools.

"I've been in football all my life, it would be nice to stay here and get to 1,000 games," Moore told BBC Tees.

India too strong

India have beaten Zimbabwe by 83 runs in the third one-day international to win the series 3-0.

India scored 276-5 in 50 overs with Kedar Jadhav 105 not out and Manish Pandey hitting 71. In reply, Zimbabwe were skitled out for 193 in 42.4 overs, despite an impressive knock of 82 from Chamu Chibhabha.

Michu cuts ties with Swansea

Swansea manager Garry Monk has confirmed that Spain international Michu will not play for the club again.

Michu took the Premier League by storm in his first season in English football in 2012-13 when he scored 22 goals following his £2m move from Rayo Vallecano.

But his second season was disrupted by injury and the same happened again when he was on loan at Napoli last term.

"He won't be with the squad this year," Monk told the South Wales Evening Post. "I now think we have kind of moved on as a squad. We had a big transition last year."

Michu - who had a year remaining on his Swans contract - is now free return home to Spain, with reported interest from Granada and former club Rayo.

Northern Ireland striker joins Wigan

Wigan Athletic have signed Northern Ireland strikerWill Grigg from Brentford for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.

The 24-year-old spent last season on loan at MK Dons where he scored 22 goals, including two against Manchester United in the League Cup.

"He's a proven goalscorer at League One level and had a superb season last year," said Wigan boss Gary Caldwell.

Maxwell to replace injured Finch

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has agreed to extend his deal with Yorkshire to replace injured compatriot Aaron Finch.

The 26-year-old was due to join the Australia A squad in India but will instead remain at Headingley after Finch returned home with a foot injury.

He will now be eligible for all three formats of the game, although New Zealand's Kane Williamson will join Yorkshire for their final four Championship fixtures.

Woolford swaps Lions for Blades

Midfielder Martyn Woolford has been reunited with manager Nigel Adkins after agreeing a two-year deal to join Sheffield United.

The 29-year-old spent the last two seasons at Millwall, scoring 11 goals in 79 appearances, and becomes Adkins's first signing of the summer. The duo previously worked together at Scunthorpe.

Motta eyes Inter return

Paris St Germain midfielder Thiago Motta has revealed he is open to a return to Inter.

The Italy international is under contract with the Ligue 1 champions for another season but is a reported target of several European clubs this summer.

Motta's former clubs Atletico Madrid and Inter are keen to acquire the 32-year-old's services and the Brazilian-born player has fuelled transfer speculation by telling Gazzetta dello Sport: "I get the impression that a cycle is coming to an end for me.

Ricketts sees bright outlook

Coventry's new signing Welsh international defender Sam Ricketts says it was the club's potential that persuaded him to sign after being released by Wolves.

The hugely experienced 33-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at the Ricoh Arena after two years at Molineux.

"The size and potential of Coventry is obvious," Ricketts told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire. "It's such a big club and there's plenty of ambition there."

Spieth has high golf IQ

Jordan Spieth's "golfing IQ" makes him a leading contender for the Open Championship at St Andrews, according to Sir Nick Faldo.

Spieth, 21, was out practising at St Andrews yesterday (see the piccie below) but chose to play the John Deere Classic in the US at the weekend - a tournament he won - instead of practising links golf at the Scottish Open.

Ex-European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley believes Spieth's chances of winning a third major of 2015 could be hindered by his preparation.

But Faldo said: "Jordan has got this great ability - many people play practice rounds with him and the next day he'll be talking about the golf course and they'll have missed everything he's talking about, all the little subtle slopes.

"He's obviously got a very high golfing IQ and he takes a lot on board."

Australia bowler Peter Siddle, who could feature in this week's second Ashes Test later this week if Mitchell Starc fails to recover from an ankle injury, has been talking to the media.

Yesterday, England's James Anderson said Australia's players rejected the offer of a post-match drink after the first Test, which England won by 169 runs.

"This is the fifth Ashes series I've played in and it's the first time anyone has gone for a drink after just one Test," said Siddle. "It's interesting coming from Jimmy as at the Oval (in 2013) he said 'I don't know why we do this, I can't stand this'.

"It's interesting comments but we know what Jimmy is like."

French rider Warren Barguil, who has been in decent form, is struggling. He gets off his bike just past a feed zone and heads to the side of the road. He looks a little bashed up but after catching his breath is back on his bike.

Australia news conference

Australia may have lost the first Ashes Test, but bowler Peter Siddle expects a different result at Lord's in the second Test, which begins on Thursday.

"We need to perform better with bat and ball," said Siddle. "Our standards over the last couple of years have been high quality but we let that slip in Cardiff. I remember in 1997 we lost the first Test and still won the Ashes. We will be playing strong and aggressive cricket and we will be looking to level the series.

"What we have been is very consistent with our bowling and our line and length but we were not anywhere near our normal high standards - and that showed. But the boys are upbeat and want to turn things around - I can see a different contest this week."

Stoke in Singapore

Mark Hughes has revealed Ryan Shawcross and Philipp Wollscheid are both ruled out of their match against Everton.

"Ryan has a little bit of trouble with his back, which will hopefully clear up quickly, whilst Philipp has had a bit of stiffness in his hamstring," he said.

England opening batsman Adam Lyth says he will not change his style of play in the second Test of the Ashes, which begins on Thursday.

Lyth, who made scores of six and 37 in the opening Test, said: "I've just got to play my way and if it's there to be hit I will hit it and if it's a decent ball I will leave or defend it.

"You have to play to your strengths. I'm an attacking batsman but I respect the conditions and the bowling. I've played here [at Lord's] quite a bit so fingers crossed I will get some runs this week."

Britain's Charlotte Henshaw has broken her own European record to qualify for the SB6 100m breaststroke final at Tollcross Swimming Centre.

Henshaw clocked one minute 37.45 seconds to beat her previous mark, set last month, by 0.11 seconds.

But she finished second to 13-year-old heat winner Tiffany Thomas Kane of Australia (1:36.59), while Ellie Simmonds also qualified for Tuesday's final in third.

Widnes sign Wolves centre Bridge

Super League side Widnes Vikings have signed Warrington Wolves centre Chris Bridge on a two-year deal from 2016.

The 31-year-old, who has been at Wolves since 2005 after joining from Bradford, was out of contract in November.

Bridge has represented Ireland and England at international level and his versatility has seen him play at both full-back and half-back.

Adeyemi agrees loan move

Leeds United have signed Cardiff City midfielder Tom Adeyemi in a season-long loan deal, with a view to a permanent move.

Adeyemi, who made his league debut for Norwich at the age of 17, previously played under Leeds boss Uwe Rosler during a loan spell with Brentford.

"I feel my body is finally healed from the surgery I had last year. They say it takes you four to six months to get back but I know other athletes who say it takes over a year and I think they are closer to being right.

Former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Xavi has hit out at Real Madrid for failing to give departing captain Iker Casillas a fitting send-off before his switch to Porto.

A tearful Casillas appeared alone in the Bernabeu stadium press room on Sunday, though after much criticism from media and the fans the club responded by organising an official presentation yesterday.

Xavi, who received a glittering farewell ceremony when he left Barcelona to join Qatari side Al Sadd last season, told Spanish paper La Vanguardia: "It cannot be that maturing Spanish athletes are not shown sufficient respect, that people neglect to value everything they have done for their sport and instead focus on their defects, sometimes with malicious intent."

Xavi, it should be noted, is a close friend of Casillas.

Fisher hopes advance planning pays off

Englishman Ross Fisher says he hopes his advance preparation will pay off when the 144th Open Championship starts at St Andrews on Thursday.

Fisher ensured he can enjoy a relaxed build-up by playing two practice rounds on the Old Course last week, before playing in the Scottish Open at nearby Gullane.

"I can now take it pretty easy Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. I don't have to go out and take a look at the course as much as the people flying over from the United States," he said.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes seems pleased with new signing Glen Johnson, saying the ex-Liverpool and England defender is "a proven, experienced player and this is a great move for him. I have been really impressed by what he has said to me".

Uncertain future

Jenson Button has revealed that his future at McLaren remains uncertain, despite claims from Ron Dennis that he will still be racing for the team in 2016.

Dennis, the McLaren CEO, said: "Jenson has a two-contract with McLaren. We are not even thinking about other drivers at the moment."

But when asked if the comments from Dennis were an indicator that he would be in Formula 1 next year, Button said, said: "It is not a given, no - there are always options everywhere."

It is understood that while Button, 35, signed a two-year contract at the end of last season, the second year relies on McLaren taking up an option on the 2009 world champion.

Tiote refused visa

Bad news for Cheick Tiote - the Newcastle midfielder is training back on Tyneside after being refused a visa to join the rest of the squad in the United States.

The Ivory Coast international was not among the party which jetted out to America and head coach Steve McClaren has since confirmed he did not travel because of an administrative issue.

McClaren told the Chronicle: "He has had visa complications and trying to get him over the visa issue has been difficult, but it wasn't successful. He is training back home."

Tiote was given a seven-month jail sentence suspended for 18 months and 180 hours community service in October 2013 after admitting possession of a fake driving licence - though it is not clear whether this had anything to do with the 29-year-old failing to get a visa.

"Froome rode this stage after the Criterium du Dauphine and said it's pretty tough. It certainly looks that way from the stage profile, and if Froomey says it's a hard one, it really is. Sometimes after a rest day your legs can feel pretty weird - after racing full gas for nine days and then having a day without that high intensity you can feel pretty lethargic.

"There's a flat start so a good chance for a breakaway to stay away on Bastille Day, but on the final climb we'll see the first real showdown between all the contenders for the yellow jersey."

Claudio Ranieri threw his hat into the ring within five days of Nigel Pearson's departure from Leicester, although it took the bookmakers and some reporters quite a while to take his claim seriously with the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Martin O'Neill the talk of the town at the time.

It's fair to say there's been a mixed reaction from fans to the appointment. Some are concerned his approach and footballing philosophy is so vastly different to Pearson's that it'll take a while to transition the squad, while others welcome his contacts within the game with a view to pushing the club on.

'Love him or hate him'

Nice words about Froch from boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, who reckons the Nottingham fighter's greatest moment was his fifth round stoppage of Canada's Lucian Bute in 2012.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has suffered a broken wrist and could miss the start of the Premier League season.

County Championship prospects - Division One

Warwickshire will be hoping for runs from their lower order when they begin day three on 167-7 against Durham at Chester-le-Street, trailing by 147 runs.

A draw seems inevitable between Middlesex and Somerset following a third-day washout at Merchant Taylors' School, with the visitors 185-8 in their first innings.

Middlesex are currently third in the table and their first priority will be to take another wicket and earn maximum bowling bonus points.

Pratley named Bolton captain

Bolton have named midfielder Darren Pratley as their club captain for the new season.

The 30-year-old former Swansea, Brentford and Fulham player has been at the club for four years and missed the second half of last season because of injury.

Two IPL teams suspended

Two teams have been suspended from the Indian Premier League after team officials were found guilty of illegally betting on matches.

A panel appointed by India's top court has given a two-year suspension to the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.

It has also recommended life suspensions on Chennai official Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals' Raj Kundra from all cricket-related activities.

Controversy swirled around the 2013 editions of the league with former India paceman S Sreesanth and two other Rajasthan cricketers arrested on suspicion of taking money to concede a fixed number of runs.

Sreesanth, who denied any wrongdoing, was subsequently banned for life by the Indian board.

Paris St-Germain's Uruguay international striker Edinson Cavani is the "prime target" to replace Fenerbahce-bound Robin van Persie, 31, at Manchester United, reports Talksport.

Decent pay-off

Capello, who managed England at the 2010 World Cup, took over as Russia coach in July 2012 and had extended his contract until the end of the 2018 tournament.

He took the team to the World Cup finals in Brazil last summer but Russia were knocked out in the group stages.

The team's form has not improved since then and they suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Austria in their Euro 2016 qualifier on 14 June, leaving them third in their group with eight points from six games.

Reports suggest Capello - one of the most well-paid managers in international football - will be paid compensation of 930 million roubles (£10.5m).

BreakingCapello sacked

Fabio Capello has been sacked as coach of Russia.

The former England boss has been axed three years before the country hosts the 2018 World Cup finals.

"The Russian Football Union and the head coach of the national team Fabio Capello have mutually agree to terminate his employment agreement," the union said in a statement.

No successor for the 69-year-old Italian has yet been named but local media in Russia have quoted sources saying CSKA Moscow coach Leonid Slutski is likely to take over.

Manchester United's arrival in Seattle caused barely a ripple of interest last night.

Although there were around 20 youngsters in the lobby of the team hotel when Louis van Gaal and his players arrived at 17:20 local time (01:20 BST), the number was well down even on their last visit to the city in 2011.

Irritated at the amount of travelling involved in last year's tour to the US, this time Van Gaal has gone for an out of the way location 10 miles from Seattle itself, in Bellevue.

With a population of 122,363 according to the most recent census in 2010, Bellevue was voted the second best place to live by USA Today in 2014 - Newton, Massachusetts was the first.

'I want to be remembered as a warrior'

Speaking on BBC Radio Five live about his decision to quit, Froch said: "I'm going to be in my 60's looking at kids in the super-middleweight division thinking 'I could do him' but I've got to be realistic. I've got nothing left to prove and I'm bowing out on top."

More importantly, Froch confirmed he would not be following in the footsteps of Joe Calzaghe by signing up for Strictly Come Dancing.

'My bones are aching'

In the world of boxing there's a pretty massive story - Britain's four-time world super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has retired.

The 38-year-old - who won 33 of his 35 fights, with 24 victories by knockout - has not fought since he knocked out George Groves with one of the best punches you'll see to retain the WBA and IBF titles in May 2014.

"I have nothing left to prove and my legacy speaks for itself," he said.

"I turned 38 last week. My joints and bones are aching. If the desire was there, I could fight again but there's nothing motivating me."

Garbutt up for grabs

Everton are planning to send left-back Luke Garbutt out on loan, just a week or so after the England under-21 international signed a new five-year deal.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez said: "He is someone we wanted to keep because he's got a terrific future and he's got probably the best left-back he could learn from here in Leighton Baines.

"This pre-season will tell us a lot but the idea is for him to go out on loan and gain important experience."

It's been 11 years since Claudio Ranieri last worked in England but the chap they call the Tinkerman is back.

It's good news for those who enjoy an entertaining press conference, with Ranieri - who has not worked in England since leaving Stamford Bridge in 2004 - always well worth watching when he's in front of the cameras, if only for his comedy facial expressions.

The Italian has a big job on his hands, taking over from Nigel Pearson, a man controversially sacked in June despite keeping the Foxes in the top flight.

"Since I left Chelsea I have dreamt of another chance to work in the best league in the world again," Ranieri said.

He'll be hoping for a better outcome than his last job - he was sacked as Greece coach last year.

Moving day

First an update on what will surely be the biggest deals involving two English clubs this summer - the £49m transfer of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool to Manchester City.

The 20-year-old will undergo a medical at the Etihad this morning and the deal could be finalised soon after. Apparently Sterling is going to earn £200,000-a-week. We're not jealous. At all.
