The fact that Manchester City have recruited Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph and are still likely to sign Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg suggests that Manuel Pellegrini has learnt the lessons of last season and will play the vast majority of this term with one striker and an extra body in midfield.

Argentine trio Sergio Aguero, Pablo Zabaleta and Martin Demichelis are back after being granted an extended summer break following their Copa America commitments, but are unlikely to feature in Saturday's final friendly in Stuttgart. That means the next season blueprint may be put on hold in Germany.
