Nicholl issues funding ban warning

"We have a zero tolerance of doping. Any athlete who has a case to answer is suspended [from the funding programme] and if they are found guilty of a serious doping offence they are banned from receiving the funding for life."

Minichiello says he reacted with initial "confusion", adding: "My question is, why has nobody acted upon it and who should have done that?"
Urging the sport's governing body to examine its "internal mechanisms", Minichiello added: "This information has been gathered and data collected on athletes going back a while, but nobody has acted upon it."

How has Adam Peaty been able to dominate breaststroke events?
Eighteen months ago few in the sport, let alone outside of it, had heard of the City of Derby swimmer but he began to show his potential at the British Championships last year, winning 50m breaststroke gold and claiming silver over the 100m and 200m distances.
Then came a stunning Commonwealth Games 100m gold, a 50m European gold and world record, which really made the leading athletes take note.
Rebecca Adlington describes him as an 'animal' in reference to his incredible beast-like performances both in land-based and water-based training while GB's head coach Bill Furniss calls Peaty the 'perfect professional' and 'ultimate athlete'.

Morning Mr President

Andy Murray is back in action this week, in Washington. And it seems he's warmed up for the tournament by visiting the White House.
"Got the chance to visit the White House yesterday!" wrote Murray on Instagram. "Was a very cool experience👍 unfortunately President Underwo...Sorry Obama wasn't there."
That, for the uninitiated, is a little House of Cards quip - a TV show in which a character called Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, is president.
Ipswich sign 'the new Delap'
Football
Some footballers like to compare themselves to Ronaldo, others to Messi. Not many say they're "the new Rory Delap".
Ipswich Town's new signing Jonas Knudsen, however, says that's how he is known by some in his native Denmark because of his long throw-in ability.
Left-back Knudsen, 22, joined Town from Esbjerg on a three-year deal on Friday.
"My dad also did it when he played," he said. "When you're a kid you look up to your dad. I see him make the throw ins, and as a little kid I did it and now it's one of my good things."
Former Stoke City midfielder Delap was famed for his long throws.

"It's not ideal travelling to Romania three days before the season start but we've got to deal with it," he told the club website.
"We've got good enough players to go to Romania and win the game comfortably. I'm looking forward to both games - I enjoy playing football so of course I'm looking forward to playing."

Cahill believes Arsenal can challenge
Football
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill feels Arsenal could mount a strong challenge for the Premier League title, following the champions' 1-0 defeat to their bitter rivals in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.
"They've started well, they've got a good squad and I think they'll be one of many pushing at the top this season," the 29-year-old told the Chelsea website.
"Let's be fair, the game's been won on a piece of individual play to smash it in the top corner, but chance-wise we had the majority of the play," the England defender said. "I think in terms of possession we had the majority of the game but it's the scoreline that matters and we're disappointed with that."

Take action

Minichiello says he reacted with initial "confusion", adding: "My question is, why has nobody acted upon it and who should have done that?"
Urging the sport's governing body to examine its "internal mechanisms", Minichiello added: "This information has been gathered and data collected on athletes going back a while, but nobody has acted upon it."
This is a story that is - pardon the pun - going to run and run.

Maybe England World Cup winner Bobby Charlton, manager of Preston in the 70s, or former Scotland captain Colin Hendry, Blackpool boss a decade ago.

Meanwhile, Glamorgan's One-Day Cup match against Hampshire had to be abandoned because of a "dangerous pitch".
After the hosts posted 182-9 from their 50 overs at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff, the umpires called off the match when Hampshire batsman Jimmy Adams was hit by a rising delivery.
"The one that hit me was pretty extreme but fortunately there's no damage done. If ," Adams said.
'Disaster'
Football
Jose Mourinho - you've probably heard of him - has branded the Wembley pitch "a disaster", criticism which the FA has accepted.
After losing to Arsenal in the Community Shield, Mourinho said: "The pitch was so bad and so slow. It was a disaster."
The FA responded by saying the pitch was not as "mature" as it should have been for the season curtain-raiser.
An FA spokesperson said: "We appreciate the feedback on playability and will continue to improve the quality of the pitch, which we have every confidence in as it matures."

Cheers or jeers? That's what we were all wondering when Wayne Rooney returned to Goodison Park in an Everton shirt to play in Duncan Ferguson's testimonial.

In front of 34,718 fans, he came on for the last 15 minutes against Villarreal. "I didn't know what to expect with the reception, but the fans were great," Rooney said.
As for the game itself, the Spaniards won 2-1, with ex-Blues striker Ferguson coming on in the 83rd minute.

'Best team lost'
Football
How does Jose Mourinho view the result? He thinks the best team lost, obviously.
The Blues had more shots on goal than Arsenal but just two were on target - an Oscar free-kick and a Kurt Zouma header.
"The best team lost. And the defensive team won," Mourinho said.
"If you want to be pragmatic, like I normally am, I say in a simple way, they score, they didn't concede. Well done. Congratulations.
"Other clubs, other managers you say are boring, that they park the bus, I don't agree with that. I say they were very well organised and because of that I give total credit."
A compliment then, but a very backhanded one.

Advantage Gunners?
Football
So did Arsenal strike a big psychological blow in beating Chelsea in the Community Shield?
It may not surprise you to learn that Arsene Wenger thinks they did.
The Gunners had not beaten a Blues side managed by Jose Mourinho in 13 previous attempts.
"It was important for the team to get that hurdle out of the way," said Wenger, though he claimed it wasn't such a big deal for himself. "For me? No," he added, "because it is Arsenal versus Chelsea, it is not the two managers. It is two teams who play against each other."
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's goal secured a 1-0 win against the Premier League champions at Wembley.
