United close to Pedro deal

The Daily Mirror reports that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is set to tie up a £20m deal for Barcelona winger Pedro in the next 48 hours - and is now being offered Real Madrid defender Pepe.

Pedro has fallen down the pecking order at the Nou Camp but Barcelona are still holding out for the £24m buy-out clause in his contract.

He has been offered a four year deal with a further one-year option and is keen to move to Manchester United to strengthen his Euro 2016 chances.

York sign Frickley striker Thompson

York City have signed striker Reece Thompson from seventh-tier side Frickley Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the League Two team after a successful trial.

Thompson scored 16 goals in 32 games for the Northern Premier League side last season.

Mertesacker believes Arsenal are ready

Defender Per Mertesacker claims Arsenal's victory over Chelsea in the FA Community Shield at Wembley shows the squad are ready to provide the answers to questions about their title credentials.

"It was a good test for both teams a week before the season," he said.

"It [the Premier League title] is decided by details, and which team can maintain a good spirit, that level of focus which is vital throughout the season. They (Chelsea) have shown it, and we have to step up and do more than last season, so that is the question for us.

"We asked the question to ourselves and you could see we really want to compete and do the next step."

Nicholl issues funding ban warning

UK Sport chief executive Liz Nicholl says any British athlete caught up in the latest drugs scandal to hit athletics faces a life ban from receiving funding if doping is proved.

The Sunday Times published data from 5,000 athletes, which it says reveals an "extraordinary extent of cheating" and Nicholl has expressed concern.

"My thoughts on this is that no matter how unpalatable the revelations are, the truth has got to be told so that the integrity of the sport is protected," she said.

"We have a zero tolerance of doping. Any athlete who has a case to answer is suspended [from the funding programme] and if they are found guilty of a serious doping offence they are banned from receiving the funding for life."

How Peaty won World gold

In case you missed it earlier, Britain's Adam Peaty won gold in the men's 100m breaststroke at the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia to become GB's first world champion in the event for 40 years.

Peaty edged out South African Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh while fellow GB swimmer Ross Murdoch claimed bronze.

Gordon shows musical skill

Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon might be used to directing matters on the field but his attempt at another type of conducting has met with mixed results.

Ahead of boarding a flight from Glasgow to Baku for Celtic's Champions League qualifier against Qarabag, Gordon seized the chance to conduct the Scottish National Orchestra in a performance of Prokofiev's Dance of the Knights from the ballet Romeo and Juliet (also known as the theme from The Apprentice).

Bevington to join Nottingham Forest

The FA's former Club England managing director Adrian Bevington is to join Nottingham Forest, initially as a consultant.

The role will be part-time to start with, though if it goes well, could well be expanded into a permanent, wider role. Bevington worked with England managers such as Sven-Goran Eriksson, Kevin Keegan and Roy Hodgson.

The Reds have been without a chief executive since the resignation of Paul Faulkner, in the wake of manager Stuart Pearce's sacking, in February this year.

Norwich's Mulumbu faces spell on sidelines

Norwich midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu will miss the opening part of the season after suffering a broken metatarsal in the friendly against Brentford on Saturday.

The former West Bromwich Albion midfielder and Democratic Republic of Congo international will undergo an operation on the injury on Monday after picking up the knock in the second half of City's 2-1 win over the Bees at Carrow Road.

City boss Alex Neil said: "Unfortunately Youssouf has a fractured metatarsal which requires immediate surgery. We anticipate his recovery should take several weeks and this is something we will be able to assess further after the operation has taken place."

Defeat for Bedene

British number two Aljaz Bedene is out of the Generali Open in Austria in the first round.

Bedene was beaten 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 6-1 by Austrian wildcard Dennis Novak who was claiming his first win at ATP level.

The world number 256 will play third seed Fabio Fognini of Italy in the second round.

Pogba signs for Partick

Guinea international Mathias Pogba, the older brother of Juventus midfielder Paul, has signed a one-year contract with Partick Thistle, with the option to extend by a further year.

The 24-year-old striker, older brother of Juventus midfielder Paul, moved to Wrexham in the National Conference in August 2010 and after two seasons there transferred to Crewe and signed for Pescara last summer before joining League One Crawley Town.

Mourinho and Wenger set to meet on Tuesday

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and his Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho will meet for the first time on Tuesday since failing to shake hands in Sunday's Community Shield match at Wembley.

The pair are both due to attend a Premier League managers meeting in London on Tuesday afternoon where rule changes and various other issues will be discussed ahead of the new season.

Morgan to get Middlesex break

Benitez expects Bale and Benzema to stay

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez remains confident Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema will both still be at the Bernabeu this coming season despite ongoing speculation about their futures.

Bale has long been linked with a move to Manchester United while Arsenal are believed to be keen on the French international.

"Gareth is a huge player for us and I know that he's happy. I'm not going to talk about offers. Everything is well and he's going to have a good season with us I'm sure," said Benitez.

On speculation about Benzema, the former Liverpool boss added: "My answer is that I think Benzema is going to stay with us. I'm very happy with him. There's no reason to think that he's going to go."

Poznan sanctioned for racist sign

Polish champions Lech Poznan will be forced to play a match behind closed doors as punishment for a racist sign at a Champions League qualifier.

Uefa took action after the offending banner appeared among Poznan's fans in the 2-0 Champions League second qualifying round first-leg win at Bosnian club FK Sarajevo on 14 July.

The club was also given a £35,000 fine.

Lambert eyes England return

Rickie Lambert has told the Birmingham Mail that he hopes his move to West Brom from Liverpool can win him back a place in Roy Hodgson's England set-up.

The 33-year-old, who made his debut for his new side on Friday, made the last of his 11 appearances as a substitute in England's 3-1 win at Celtic Park against Scotland in November 2014 after scoring against the same opposition in August 2013 on his debut.

"You have just got to believe in yourself and hopefully if I play like I did in a couple of seasons at Southampton then there's no reason why I can't get back in there," he said.

"I scored 15 goals and then 13 goals for Southampton and obviously it is over a year since I did that but I have just got to get back to that now. I've just got to ignore the comments and focus on my football."

O'Connor wins world bronze

Siobhan Marie O'Connor wins bronze in the 200m individual medley at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Hungary's Katinka Hosszu took gold in a new world record time of two minutes 6.12 seconds while Japan's Kanako Watanabe claimed silver. O'Connor's GB team-mate Hannah Miley was fifth.

North set to miss warm-up game

British and Irish Lions winger George North is unlikely to play in Wales' first World Cup warm-up match against Ireland in Cardiff on Saturday, 8 August.

The 23-year-old missed the final 10 weeks of last season after suffering his third concussion in a five-month period but he could feature in the return Ireland fixture in Dublin on 29 August.

England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has appeared before a judge on child sex charges.

The 28-year-old, who has played 12 times for England, appeared at Durham Crown Court for a hearing ahead of a trial due to take place on 10 February.

The winger has pleaded not guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child under 16 and another of grooming.

Mr Johnson, from Castle Eden, County Durham, remains on conditional bail.

Rooney gets individual 400m spot

European champion Martyn Rooney has won a British Athletics appeal and has been given an individual spot in the 400m for the World Championships in Beijing later this month.

Rooney had already been selected in the relay and now joins Jarryd Dunn and Rabah Yousif Bkheit who had already been selected for the 400m last week.

"I'm happy that my appeal was successful," said Rooney. "Now I can focus on preparing for the world championships and representing Great Britain to the best of my ability."

Bale to face Tottenham

Gareth Bale will face his old club tomorrow as Real Madrid take on Tottenham in the Audi Cup.

The 26-man Real Madrid squad, including Toni Kroos and Lucas Vasquez, has arrived in Germany ahead of the game at the Allianz Arena in Munich (kick-off 17:15 BST).

Collison to manage Posh youngster

Peterborough United have named former West Ham midfielder Jack Collisonas manager of their Under-21 side.

Hampshire director of cricket Giles White has told BBC Radio Solent that the umpires made the right choice to abandon their One-Day Cup match against Glamorgan over fears of "a dangerous pitch".

West Ham United's Enner Valencia has been ruled out for 12 weeks with a leg injury.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury during last Thursday's UEFA Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie with Astra Giurgiu, as pictured below.

In a statement on their website, West Ham said: "The outcome of a scan is that there is now a very small chance that he will need an operation.

"He will spend the next three weeks in a walking boot and using crutches but if everything goes to plan we hope that he will be available for selection again within 10 to 12 weeks."

Hunt tops the leaderboard

Britain's Gary Hunt has taken the lead in the men's cliff diving at the world championships in Russia, making him the gold medal favorite in Wednesday's final rounds.

Hunt's spectacular three-somersault, four-twist dive off the 27-meter platform was the best-scoring effort of the day, picking up 161.20 points.

That gave him a total of 381.10, ahead of the United States' David Colturi in second on 359.10.

Wales hope George North could return in their World Cup warm-up in Ireland on 29 August as the Northampton wing has been out for almost five months out after suffering concussion.

West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster is set to miss the start of the Premier League season as he continues his recovery from a cruciate knee ligament injury which he sustained in March. But the 32-year-old is busy continuing his rehabilitation.

Ferguson admits to nerves before testimonial

He might have terrified opponents during his playing days but Duncan Ferguson admitted to being wracked by nerves ahead of his testimonial game between Everton and Villarreal at Goodison Park on Sunday.

"I was very nervous, more so because I didn't know if the shirt was going to fit," the 43-year-old told the Liverpool Echo.

"I'd not had chance to put it on. So that was one hurdle I had to overcome.

"It was nerve-wracking but it was a proud day to play in front of these fans and for my family to be here and to play in front of the chairman and these top players, it was really amazing. I wish I could roll back the clock 20 years."

Quintana to take part in Vuelta

Tour de France runner-up Nairo Quintana will compete in the Spanish Vuelta, which starts on 22 August.

The Colombian, who rides for the Movistar team, will be joined by former Vuelta champion Alejandro Valverde, who was third in this year's Tour.

Quintana crashed out of last year's Vuelta following his victory at the 2014 Giro.

No rest for United stars

It has emerged Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal had a non-too-pleasant surprise for his players when they returned from their pre-season tour of the United States last Thursday.

After spending 18 days away from home, the United squad found their return to their families had been delayed - by an additional training session.

Although physically, the light session was a good idea after an eight-hour flight from Chicago, the United players were not too happy at the prospect of spending more time on the training ground after the number of double sessions they were put through in the USA.

Leicester defender Robert Huth is pleased to be reunited with new Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri - the man who gave him his Premier League debut in 2002 while the pair were at Chelsea.

"I was only 17 at the time and he let me train with the first team from just before my 17th birthday." said Huth, who scored the first of his side's goals in Saturday's pre-season win against Birmingham at St Andrew's.

"That was good first team experience at that young age and he gave me my debut.

"He's slightly different in that he likes to set up a little more defensively and start with a clean sheets. That's something we're keen to do - stay solid - and maybe score a few more goals. The way we finished last season was tremendous and we'll try to keep it tight at the back and score a few more goals up front."

Bournemouth are on the verge of re-signing the Ivory Coast international Max Gradel from St Etienne. The former Leeds winger is having a medical ahead of the move being completed.

He previously spent time on loan with Bournemouth in 2007/08, has played over 40 times for Ivory Coast and scored 17 times in Ligue 1 last year as St Etienne qualified for the Europa League.

Here's more about Connor Wickham who has become Crystal Palace's fourth signing of the summer after his move from Sunderland.

The 22-year-old joined the Black Cats for £8m in 2011 from Ipswich, where he made his debut aged just 16 years and 11 days.

He scored 15 goals in 91 games for Sunderland and helped them avoid the drop in 2013-14 when he netted five in their last six games.

But the England Under-21 international struggled to make a consistent impact at the Stadium of Light and was loaned out to Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday during his time in the north-east.

West Ham forward Enner Valencia has said on Instagram that he does not require surgery following a potentially serious injury on Thursday night.

The club said on Friday that the 25-year-old had suffered what "appears to be a significant injury to his right knee and right ankle" in Thursday's Europa League draw against Astra Giurgiu and refused to put a time-frame on his return ahead of a meeting with a consultant.

"I would like to thank everyone for the support and the affection shown on this difficult moment. Thanks God, today I received great news as I won't need surgery, all the best!" he wrote.

Bojan nears return

Stoke manager Mark Hughes has told the club website that striker Bojan Krkic is progressing well from his knee injury but the Spaniard will take more time to regain full match fitness.

The former Barcelona forward suffered a cruciate ligament knee injury in an FA Cup tie against Rochdale in January, ruling him out for the rest of the season but made his return in Sunday's Colonia Cup defeat against Portugese side FC Porto.

"It's obvious at the moment that he is not quite there yet and he understands that but with the progress he is making then he will get there very soon, but it's one of those things that will certainly take a bit of time," Hughes added.

Austin will 'probably' leave

QPR striker Charlie Austin - and midfielder Leroy Fer - are likely to leave the club in the summer transfer window, according to boss Chris Ramsey.

The pair sat out QPR's pre-season friendly against Atalanta on Sunday.

"People are very interested. We know it's a financial situation where the players, given the right offer, will probably go," Ramsey told BBC London 94.9.

'Amateurs'

Hull City chairman Assem Allam is clearly not one to refrain from speaking his mind, branding the Football Association as "amateurs" after his plan to rebrand the club was blocked.

Allam wanted to rename the Championship club Hull Tigers, but the change was rejected by the FA Council in July.

Stephenson died last month, aged 62.

Hendry pleads guilty

Former Scotland and Blackburn Rovers captain Colin Hendry has pleaded guilty to harassing his ex-girlfriend.

Hendry, 49, admitted sending unwanted text messages and emails to beautician Sarah Kinder after she ended their relationship in March.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson insists the Reds will banish any thoughts of their previous visit to the Britannia Stadium when they start the season at Stoke City this weekend - the venue where they lost 6-1 in the final game of last season.

"There couldn't be a better place for us to start and put what happened there last season to bed once and for all," the midfielder told the club website.

"The lads who were playing that day will remember it for quite some time. It was a horrible day for everyone involved. We have a determination to do better and to improve as a team. We are focusing on the future and that is the first game at Stoke."

Leeds United are set to sign wingerStuart Dallas from Championship rivals Brentford for an undisclosed fee.

BBC Radio Leeds reports that the 24-year-old Northern Ireland international will have a medical with the Elland Road side on Monday.

Dallas played under Leeds head coach Uwe Rosler when the German was in charge at Griffin Park.

Roberto Soldado looks likely to leave Tottenham for Villareal for a £11 million transfer fee making a loss to the London club of £15 million, reports The Mirror.

Tom Daley is celebrating today after recovering from a poor start to win his second medal of the 2015 World Aquatics Championships with bronze in the men's 10m platform event.

It was his first individual World Championship medal since 2009 and came after he won team gold with Rebecca Gallantree in the team event.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill feels Arsenal could mount a strong challenge for the Premier League title, following the champions' 1-0 defeat to their bitter rivals in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

"They've started well, they've got a good squad and I think they'll be one of many pushing at the top this season," the 29-year-old told the Chelsea website.

"Let's be fair, the game's been won on a piece of individual play to smash it in the top corner, but chance-wise we had the majority of the play," the England defender said. "I think in terms of possession we had the majority of the game but it's the scoreline that matters and we're disappointed with that."

Celtic concern over Azerbaijan pitch

Celtic are waiting for information on their next Champions League venue after reports in Azerbaijan claimed Qarabag's pitch is badly damaged.

Reports have claimed that the pitch is heat-damaged and that up to a third of the surface is unplayable, although other reports claim the damage is only cosmetic.

Celtic fly out to Baku on Monday with a 1-0 lead ahead of Wednesday's third qualifying round match.

A Celtic spokesman said: "We are aware of the issue as regards the pitch in Baku. At the moment we are seeking reassurances over the quality of the surface."

Dzeko deal on

ESPN is reporting that Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko move to Roma is edging nearer.

"City were holding out for a fee of €30 million for Dzeko while Roma were willing to offer €20m plus bonuses," it reports.

Lord Coe has promised the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will react robustly to the allegations of doping in the sport.

Lord Coe, currently standing to become the next IAAF president, said the world governing body "takes these allegations extremely seriously" and "will issue a robust and detailed response to them".

World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) president Sir Craig Reedie said his organisation was "very disturbed by these new allegations... which will, once again, shake the foundation of clean athletes worldwide".

Rocked by doping allegations

One of the big stories today comes from the world of athletics, though it's not one the sport will be proud of.

Figures obtained by the Sunday Times, and verified by the BBC, show an "extraordinary extent of cheating" by athletes at the world's biggest events.

Among many things, the figures reveal...

• A third of medals (146, including 55 golds) in endurance events at the Olympics and World Championships between 2001 and 2012 were won by athletes who have recorded suspicious tests. It is claimed none of these athletes have been stripped of their medals.

• More than 800 athletes - one in seven of those named in the files - have recorded blood tests described by one of the experts as "highly suggestive of doping or at the very least abnormal".

Off to a flier

It has not taken long for Christian Benteke to get up and running at Liverpool, the striker scoring on his first appearance since joining the club from Aston Villa for £32.5m.

After the hosts posted 182-9 from their 50 overs at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff, the umpires called off the match when Hampshire batsman Jimmy Adams was hit by a rising delivery.

"The one that hit me was pretty extreme but fortunately there's no damage done. If ," Adams said.

'Disaster'

Jose Mourinho - you've probably heard of him - has branded the Wembley pitch "a disaster", criticism which the FA has accepted.

After losing to Arsenal in the Community Shield, Mourinho said: "The pitch was so bad and so slow. It was a disaster."

The FA responded by saying the pitch was not as "mature" as it should have been for the season curtain-raiser.

An FA spokesperson said: "We appreciate the feedback on playability and will continue to improve the quality of the pitch, which we have every confidence in as it matures."

Di Maria on the move

Angel Di Maria has arrived in Doha for his medical with Paris St Germain.

The Argentina international, 27, touched down in Qatar late on Sunday night and posed for photos with fans at the airport in the country's capital.

He is expected to complete his transfer later today.

Boy dies during baseball game

Some shocking news overnight from America, where a nine-year-old boy has died after being accidentally hit in the head by a bat during a baseball game.

Kaiser Carlile was struck by a warm-up swing while acting as the Liberal Bee Jays' batboy - a youngster who carries and arranges equipment.

The game in Wichita, Kansas was against the San Diego Waves in the National Baseball Congress World Series.

Carlile, who was wearing a helmet, was taken away in an ambulance and his death was confirmed on Sunday.

Welcome back

Cheers or jeers? That's what we were all wondering when Wayne Rooney returned to Goodison Park in an Everton shirt to play in Duncan Ferguson's testimonial.

Turned out it was the former, with the England captain - who made 77 appearances for Everton before joining Manchester United for £25m in 2004 - being given a standing ovation.

In front of 34,718 fans, he came on for the last 15 minutes against Villarreal. "I didn't know what to expect with the reception, but the fans were great," Rooney said.

The Blues had more shots on goal than Arsenal but just two were on target - an Oscar free-kick and a Kurt Zouma header.

"The best team lost. And the defensive team won," Mourinho said.
