When a £49m midfielder who is loved and loathed in equal measure steps out for your team, it's easy to forget that you have David Silva pulling the strings there too.

The Spanish maestro put in an "unbelievable performance" against West Brom, according to Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini. Gary Lineker was just as gushing, calling Silva "different gravy" on Twitter.

Goal-scoring captain Vincent Kompany hinted at an edge to City's attitude this season: "We came out knowing we had a point to prove. Obviously there is a lot of favourite teams now and we're not part of it, I've heard."

Sunday is their chance to put that statement to its first proper test as they welcome Chelsea to the Etihad.

World number one Rory McIlroy is putting his best foot forward ahead of his PGA Championship defence this week.

The Northern Irishman has been out of action with an ankle injury since June but has told the Daily Mail , externalit now feels "even better when I swing hard".

There are some fairly gratuitous pictures of said ankle, too, if you fancy taking a look over your breakfast.

    Yaya's back - Pellegrinipublished at 09:09

    West Brom 0-3 Man City

Mulling over your first fantasy football transfer this weekend? Yaya Toure must be back on your list now.

Don't believe me? Just ask his boss...

"We know what he can give to our team in every game," said Manuel Pellegrini.

"Yaya had a strange year last year. It was not the way he normally started a season. He had many problems, with the death of his brother, and then problems with his agent.

"Now he is more calm and we will see the same Yaya that we know."

From taking it on the chin to throwing the toys out of the pram, the art of PR has often escaped football managers.

Tony Pulis's magnanimous acceptance of failure against Man City was an example of how to win over fans, while Jose Mourinho's less-than-dignified potshot at his own backroom staff on Saturday wasn't exactly textbook stuff.

'Rude awakening' - Pulispublished at 08:47

    West Brom 0-3 Man City

West BrombossTony Puliswas refreshingly honest about his decision-making last night, taking the blame for misjudging his tactics.

He explained: "I said to the players after the game I have to take responsibility for this one.

"I played Saido Berahino and Rickie Lambert and that left the midfield too open. It went against the principles I have always worked to and it has given me a rude awakening."
