  1. Murray too good

    Australian Open

    Murray

Over in Australia, British number one Andy Murray made an impressive start - seeing off German teenager Alexander Zverev in straightforward fashion to reach the second round.

Murray, 28, dominated throughout against the former junior world number one to secure a 6-1 6-2 6-3 victory.

"It was hot so I was glad to get it done in three sets," said the Scot.

  2. Back for more

    Athletics

    Kipsang

The last two winners of the London Marathon, Kenyan rivals Wilson Kipsang and Eliud Kipchoge, will return for another shot at the title in April.

In a sprint finish last year, two-time champion Kipsang was beaten by Kipchoge.

  3. Vidic on a free?

    Football

    Vidic

Anyone fancy this fella on a free transfer?

After failing to make an appearance this season, Nemanja Vidic has had his Inter Milan contract cancelled and is a free agent.

The 34-year-old former Serbia defender joined Serie A side Inter on a free transfer from Manchester United in 2014.

He won five Premier League titles and the 2007-08 Champions League in his eight and a half years at Old Trafford.

  4. Gayle hits out ... on social media

    Cricket

    Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle has written a slightly rambling and rather lengthy post on Instagram.

It's way too long to repeat here but contains lines like. "The real ppl who stand by Gayle worldwide through the so call BS against me in the media, Thank You! To the MEDIA, Thank You all so! The Haters, I Thank you even more."

It would, it seems, relate to the reaction after Gayle asked a TV reporter for a date in a live interview during a Big Bash League game in Australia. As a result of that, he was fined A$10,000 (£4,900) for "inappropriate conduct".

Gayle ended his stint at Melbourne Renegades in the right manner on Monday - smashing a spectacular 12-ball half-century.

  5. Pennant heads to Singapore

    Football

    Pennant

Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has signed for Singapore side Tampines Rovers.

It is a one-year deal and media reports suggest it could be worth about Sg$40,000 (£19,500) a month, which would make him the highest-paid player in the S-League's 21-year history.

"I don't look at it as a lesser league, it's just another chapter in my career," said Pennant, 33.

He has been a free agent since a spell with Wigan last season.

  6. Stokes on the move

    Football

    Anthony Stokes

Anthony Stokes has re-joined Hibernian on loan from Celtic until the end of the season.

The 27-year-old striker played for the Edinburgh side between 2009 and 2010, when his tally of 24 goals in 48 matches earned him a move to Parkhead.

Now Stokes has returned to Easter Road in search of first-team football, having only appeared for Celtic twice this campaign.

  7. Blatter still being paid

    Fifa latest

    Richard Conway

BBC Radio 5 live sports news correspondent

    Blatter

"Sepp Blatter is still receiving his salary as president of Fifa despite being suspended and subsequently banned from football for eight years.

"A spokesman for Fifa's Audit and Compliance Committee told BBC that Blatter will continue to be paid until a new president is elected on February 26.

"Fifa's Audit and Compliance Committee has decided it will stop Blatter's bonuses bring paid to him but not, due to his contract, his salary.

"The bonuses could be stopped because Blatter was not in a position to supervise Fifa."

  8. Not pleasant reading ... despite victory

    Swansea 1-0 Watford

  9. Arresting the decline

    Swansea 1-0 Watford

    Dafydd Pritchard

BBC Sport Wales at the Liberty Stadium

"Having won only one of their previous 11 Premier League games, Swansea sought to arrest their decline by appointing former Udinese manager Guidolin to work alongside interim boss Alan Curtis.

"Former Chelsea midfielder Gabriele Ambrosetti also joined the Swans' coaching staff.

"Guidolin may not have been entertained by a drab first half, but he will have been encouraged to see Swansea take the lead for only the fifth time in 22 league matches this season.

"After a corner was half-cleared, Ki Sung-yueng's fine cross found Williams, who headed in firmly for the first top-flight goal by a Swansea defender since he struck against Everton in March 2014."

  10. Four on the bounce

    Swansea 1-0 Watford

Great news for Swansea, not so good for Watford...

  11. Big three points

    Swansea 1-0 Watford

    Swansea

Now then, to South Wales where I dare say there are a lot of folk breathing a big sigh of relief.

Swansea are out of the Premier League relegation zone after what is best described as a gritty win against Watford.

With new head coach Francesco Guidolin watching from the stands, Swansea edged an uneventful encounter courtesy of a fight-half Ashley Williams' header.

Swansea, now 17th in the table, almost got a second but substitute Bafetimbi Gomis hit a post late on.

  12. Nadal dumped out

    Tennis

And get yourself over to our live text commentary page right here for reaction to what has been one a heck of a contest between Rafa Nadal and Fernando Verdasco.

Fifth seed Nadal is out, after five pulsating sets - fellow Spaniard Verdasco taking the decider 6-2.

Rafa was so hot mid-game, he even did a striptease.

  13. Konta the conqueror

    Australian Open

    Konta

Let's start with a spot of major tennis news from the Australian Open, where Brit Johanna Konta has only gone and dumped Venus Williams out of the tournament.

After Heather Watson's slightly miserable exit yesterday (and defeat for Laura Robson at a minor tournament in the US), Konta's victory over the eighth-seed was a welcome boost for women's tennis in the country - and how she deserved it.

Konta, 24, won 6-4 6-2 in 79 minutes, hitting five aces to Williams' one and winning 71% of her points on first serve compared to just 52 from Williams.

    Fantastic stuff.
