  2. 'Life in the Championship has been tough'published at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 9 January

For the vast majority of Luton fans this will be a sad day indeed.

Rob Edwards gave them one of the best days in the club's history and then led with honour and dignity during some rough moments.

He took over with the club 10th in the Championship and led them to the play-offs, culminating in the Wembley final win over Coventry City that took them into the Premier League.

And the financial reward that brought has helped towards the cost of the new stadium at Power Court.

The Hatters were relegated from the top flight but not without a plucky fight, and Edwards’ handling of captain Tom Lockyer's cardiac arrest was above and beyond.

However, life in the Championship has been tough and uncomfortable for a number of reasons.

Fifteen defeats already this season isn't good enough, especially compared to the record of the other two relegated sides, who are second and third.

Ultimately the manager takes the blame, and so the man who will be remembered for that glorious moment at Wembley and getting Luton into the top flight for the first time in 31 years departs.

    • Before joining the Hatters he was head coach for their rivals Watford. His contract with the Hornets was terminated after just 11 matches.
    • Luton were 10th in the Championship when he joined, but won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 30 years following play-off victory against Coventry City.
    • Under his leadership the Hatters suffered 24 losses in the Premier League, finishing 18th, before being relegated back to the Championship.
    • On Monday Luton lost 2-1 to Queen Park Rangers, their seventh defeat in 10 matches.
    • Edwards won 32 of his 103 games in charge of Luton.
