Martha: Could you give my dad a big hello from me? He's a massive fan of F1 (the loudest he shouts is at George Russell through the TV) and I adore him to bits.

Elliot: The first F1 grand prix I remember was the semi-boycotted 05 US GP, not because of its controversy but because I was sat on my dad's lap the whole time - and I've barely missed a race since! I'd like to shout out my dad, Adrian, for the life-long passion, drama and laughs.

  2. More points for Alonso?published at 18:38 British Summer Time 15 June

That would be two-time world champion - and back-to-back Canada winner - Fernando Alonso. The thumbs were pretty evenly split yesterday when I asked whether or not you liked the Spaniard's heavier moustache look. Here it is again in case you want to examine the face fuzz in more detail.

It's been a difficult campaign so far for Alonso and Aston Martin, however, he did score his first points of the year on home soil in Spain two weeks ago. It may only be two but at least he's off the mark. After Saturday's qualifying he said he was happy with his P6 performance, which was set on the C5 medium tyre compared to the C6 soft.

Lewis Hamilton has opted to arrive in style on two wheels this weekend via a bright red Ducati Panigale V4 superbike. He's also wearing everyone's favourite double denim number, the 'Canadian tuxedo'.

Meanwhile, his Scuderia team-mate Charles Leclerc was downcast in the paddock after his shootout display. The Monegasque driver said the pace was there in the car for pole but his own errors scuppered his chances. Leclerc, who came third in Barcelona, starts down in P8 today.

So, Hamilton is starting P5, fellow Brit Lando Norris is lining up in P7, so which driver is the groundhog in the middle of the Ferrari and McLaren? ...

I'm now in my 52nd year and have my dad to thank for my interest and understanding of F1, and many motorsports. We'd sit down together, after Sunday lunch, and await the excitement of the late, great Murray Walker's commentary to entertain us through the afternoon. Great times.

    Richard

Please send happy Father’s Day wishes to my amazing Dad, Mike, who introduced me to F1 some 40+ years ago. One of my most vivid childhood memories is of being woken in the middle of the night (an hour early, as we had forgotten the clocks were changing) for the 1986 Australian Grand Prix, only to see Nigel Mansell’s championship hopes disintegrate with his tire…

  5. Piastri and others waiting in the wingspublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 15 June

What if the on-track battle between George Russell and Max Verstappen does a get a bit fiery? Oscar Piastri knows he has a great chance in Canada to extend his championship advantage over team-mate Lando Norris by potentially pouncing on any dramatics up the front. But he also can't afford to be sucked in to the fight if the Mercedes and Red Bull do come to blows.

Also waiting in the wings should the door be flung open is the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, who qualified in an excellent fourth place, and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

The 40-year-old is taking to the Canadian track for the first time for Ferrari and says he's targeting a podium finish from P5. He certainly knows how to do that, as along with fellow seven-time title winner Michael Schumacher, Hamilton has won a record seven times in Montreal.

  6. 'A podium would be lovely' - Norrispublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 15 June

Lando Norris, who starts in P7 for McLaren: "Turn One is hard to do a lot here, it's a very short run but it's a long race and it's a lot of laps.

"There are plenty of chances and opportunities to overtake and go forward.

"A podium would be lovely and that's our target today but it's still going to be tough."

Formula 1: 'Not perfect' start to season but Norris 'still happy'

Oscar Piastri may have lost out on pole position but at least the Aussie is starting in the podium places today. His McLaren team-mate Lando Norris had a qualifying to forget in Montreal and now finds himself in recovery mode in seventh place.

Norris said two mistakes cost him in the top 10 shootout, errors that team principal Andrea Stella put down to the Briton pushing too hard on the semi-permanent Canadian circuit. Norris also mentioned the revised front suspension layout he is using just hasn't really click into place yet.

F1 correspondent Andrew Benson sat down with Norris earlier this week to chat about his start to the season, his championship rivalry with Piastri and racing his good mate Max Verstappen.

  9. 'I know it’s not going to be a straightforward race' - Russellpublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 15 June

George Russell at the Canadian Grand PrixImage source, Getty Images

Pole sitter George Russell spoke to Sky Sports: "I actually watched it three times in a row last night. I think these laps you can’t really describe it, you’re working in a perfect harmony with the car and the tyres and that’s what you obviously chase every single lap.

"To get it right on the limit on the tyre where you’re not going over the limit one single time it just gives you so much more lap time.

"I think you can probably do these laps 10 times a year but actually being able to do it in Q3 when it matters that’s the key."

On the start: "I’ve watched a few, it will be an interesting Turn One, but like I said yesterday I’ve just got to focus on myself.

"If I make a good clean start then there will be no threat at the beginning but I know it’s not going to be as straightforward race.

"It’s much hotter today unfortunately and we know we tend to do slightly worse in the hotter conditions. I think [Oscar] Piastri is going to be quick, they can go long, they can go short so trying to keep both of them behind us is going to be challenging."

On the tyres: "We will all be starting on the medium tryes, at least the top ten drivers.

"We don’t know if it’s going to be a one or a two stop so we need to sort of be alive to all the situations and be able to pull the trigger when required."

  10. Why Mercedes have performed well in Canadapublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 15 June

George Russell said his pole lap in Montreal had given him "goosebumps" and after letting victory slip through his fingers last year, said he wanted to make amends for what was a "poor race" in 2024.

Mercedes' improved performance is down to the combination of relatively cool temperatures at just over 20C and a low-abrasion track that enables their car to keep its tyre temperatures down.

It had to be these two starting alongside each other after the late drama of the Spanish Grand Prix. Max Verstappen is three penalty points heavier following his contact with George Russell two weeks ago. The Dutchman, who was also given a time penalty, now has 11 points on his licence, one away from a race ban.

Two of those points expire on 30 June, but that still leaves Verstappen with nine until late October. He was unimpressed with questions about his situation during the post-qualifying new conference yesterday, saying it was a "waste of time" and "very childish".

Russell joked he had a few more points on his licence to play with after securing pole, so what will be the two driver's tactics on the rundown to Turn One? Full agression maybe? Or try and keep out of trouble to avoid ruining your race completely?

Mr Saturday has arrived in the Canadian paddock to take his position at the front of the pack today, just like he did 12 months ago in Montreal. Last year didn't quite go to plan for George Russell and Mercedes and the Briton ended up finishing in third place after starting on pole.

His efforts yesterday saw him beat rival Max Verstappen in the dying moments of Q3 by 0.160 seconds to claim his, and the team's, first pole of the 2025 campaign. Russell said his final run was "one of the most exhilarating laps" of his life.

  13. Pit-lane starts for both Gasly and Lawsonpublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 15 June

The pit lane will have two drivers on the starting blocks today. Alpine and Racing Bulls took Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson's respective cars out of parc ferme conditions to make changes, so the pair will vacate their grid spots - P20 for Gasly and P19 for Lawson - and begin their 70-lap race from the pit lane instead.

  15. Tsunoda starts at the backpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 15 June

Nico Hulkenberg has gained a place at the expense of Yuki Tsunoda today, as the Red Bull driver has to pack up his stuff and move all the way to the back of the grid for lights out.

Tsunoda, who qualified in P11, has been given a 10-place grid penalty after he was guilty of overtaking Oscar Piastri on the back straight when a red flag came out during third practice. Piastri was going slowly and carrying damage following his contact with the Wall of Champions.

It's another blow for Tsunoda, who has picked up just 10 points in seven grands prix since his switch from Racing Bulls to replace Liam Lawson early in the season.

  16. Hadjar hit with three-place grid penaltypublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 15 June

Carlos Sainz was furious with his Q1 exit on Saturday and instantly flagged to his Williams team he had been the victim of "massive impeding" during the scrap to make it through to Q2.

The offending car was Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar, who was given misinformation by his pit wall that Spaniard Sainz had already aborted his lap when the two cars came across each other in the first sector.

After qualifying, the stewards found Hadjar guilty of impeding so the Frenchman will now drop down the order from P9 to P12, promoting Alex Albon, Franco Colapinto and Nico Hulkenberg.
