While plenty of players are making moves today, Robert MacIntyre takes a frustrating step backwards at the fourth.
He's paid the price for a poor second shot that picked out the rough and he's dropped to four under par.
Steady from partner Harris English though, and he remains in touch.

Li Haotong rolls in a seven footer for birdie on the third to get to within one of the lead, but it's disaster again for Brian Harman who misses a tiddler for par so makes a bogey to go along with his double at the first.

There's a huge amount of different nationalities playing in The Open this year, but two dominating right now.
There are seven Americans in the top 14 and five players from England - the other two coming from China and Northern Ireland (bet you can't guess who that is?).

Scottie Scheffler's eagle putt from 50 feet comes to rest about four feet past the hole.
And the world number one misses the one on the way back!
Par-par start for Scheffler, who is now in a share of the lead after Matt Fitzpatrick's eagle three.

That's some way to bounce back from a short miss for par on the first!
Matt Fitzpatrick is off to the left of the second green in two, but the Englishman chips over a little mound and straight into the cup!
We wait to see what Scottie Scheffler, who has an eagle putt shortly, will do but for now he's in a share of the lead.

One of the (many) brilliant things about Royal Portrush is the amount of vantage points from which to watch the action unfold.
The dunes that frame the holes provide great viewing spots but what's your plan of action? Are you in the pack, following your favourite player's every move?
Or are you finding a spot like this one that affords terrific views down the 17th fairway to the green, with the 13th next to it and 12th in the distance... there's the added bonus of the 18th fairway directly behind you...

Nice response from Brian Harman on the second as he makes a birdie to get one of those shots back he lost on the first.
Mentality has never been a problem for the American left-hander.

Rory McIlroy's feeling it today - and he's showing it on the seventh as he winds up and launches an absolute monster of a drive.
Just the 370 yards!
If you ever get the chance to attend an event McIlroy's playing in just go down to the range and watch him hitting driver - it's like a different sport!

It was an unwanted opening bogey on the first for Tony Finau, but he quickly made amends with back-to-back birdies.
That's five under for the 35-year-old, who started his tournament with rounds of 70 and 68.

Scottie Scheffler had 11 one-putts in the second round. That's the best of his major career.
A couple of years ago, his putting was his Achilles heel. But in September 2023, he got in touch with putting coach Phil Kenyon. Within a year he'd won a second Masters title, Olympic gold and seven PGA Tour events.
This year he's won three times, including the US PGA Championship.
I spoke to Phil about the work he's being doing with Scottie prior to this week and also picked up a little advice for putting on links greens.

Scottie Scheffler strode off ahead of Matt Fitzpatrick as they left the first green, the gap between them having doubled in the space of one hole. A sign of things to come today?

When you make a mistake, minimise the damage and that's exactly what Justin Rose has done at the eighth.
It's only one shot gone, which could have been a whole lot worse after scrubbing around in the rough throughout the hole.

It's been a sound start from Tyrrell Hatton, who can't quite find the cup from 20 feet for birdie but does extend his streak of pars at the beginning of his third round.
Rasmus Hojgaard three-putts from 30 feet, with the par putt from less than four feet never troubling the hole. A bogey for the Dane.
Such has been the quality of scoring elsewhere, that's dropped him into a tie for 15th.

We're not seeing anything of Harris English and Bob MacIntyre but they have both navigated the second and third holes without any change to their scores.
They stay four and five shots back respectively.

Rory McIlroy took the opportunity to study the leaderboard just short of the fifth green so he knows Russell Henley and Justin Rose have made big moves too.
On Thursday and Friday, McIlroy was chatting away to Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood as he went round.
He's all business today - although he is still acknowledging the amazing levels of support on each hole.

Another par for Rory McIlroy on the sixth hole with another nice lag putt from a mile away - 50 feet if you're interested - leaving him a just a two footer for a three.
Funny one this, as Rory is three under through six which is a great start, but a combination of being so far behind Scottie Scheffler and having two great chances to be a couple of shots better off means there's almost a sense of disappointment about the place.
Golf eh!

That’s an unforced error from Matt Fitzpatrick. He hit a pretty good first putt, obviously ran a little fast but that’s more to do with nerves more than anything else.

Scottie Scheffler is bidding to become just the fourth player to win a Masters, US PGA Championship and Open before the age of 30, after Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
This'll be his final chance - Scheffler turns 30 next June, before the 2026 Open at Royal Birkdale.
A great tee shot from the world number one on the second, a par-five he could easily reach in two.

One fan shouts "Rory's gonna get ya" as Scottie Scheffler plays his second shot at the first.
Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick are safely on the green in two, but with long birdie attempts to come.
Scheffler is safely in for four, but Fitzpatrick misses from about four feet for a par and drops back to eight under.
Scheffler has a two-shot lead.

Justin Rose has got a fearsome lie down right side of the eighth hole after his tee shot.
Oh yikes, what happened there? He yells "Fore" as his attempt to clip it out shanks further right and into the spectators down the side of the fairway.
A promising round is stalling somewhat here.
