George Russell won the Austrian Grand Prix after a collision between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris while they were fighting for the lead.

Verstappen was given a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Norris after he moved over on the McLaren driver while Norris was trying to pass. The Briton was forced into retirement.

It was a controversial climax to a battle over several laps as each complained about the other’s driving.

Russell’s win was Mercedes’ first since the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix. He was under pressure from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in the final laps but was able to maintain his winning advantage.

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz took the final podium position ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, despite a five-second penalty for Hamilton for crossing the white line on pit entry for his first stop.

Almost time for us to clock off, but we'll just take a quick look at the championship standings before we go...

  6. 'In the end it cost both of them' - Hornerpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 30 June

Red Bull's team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports: "It looked like there was enough space up there for Lando. He already had the violation with the four strikes on track limits, but it's one of those things. We will bounce back next weekend.

"You've got hard racers and I think that Lando was getting his elbows out, and there had been contact before with them, but in the end it cost both of them.

"I thought the penalty was harsh, that's racing sometimes."

  7. 'I've had a lot of battles in my career'- Verstappenpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 30 June

Max Verstappen on whether it was a fair fight with Lando Norris: "His dive bombs, he's so late on the breaks, I think it’s the shape of the corner that provides these issues sometimes. It is what it is. It is never nice when it happens.

"I need to look back at why and how we touched of course we will talk about it, its just what happens. I've had a lot of battles in my career. The incident is one thing we’ve done wrong from the strategy and pit stop.

"The car was weird, first stint wasn’t bad but got worse and worse. We need to look into the car."

  8. 'The guy in the car knows best' - Verstappenpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 30 June

Max Verstappen who went from leading the race to finishing in fifth spot after contact with Lando Norris: "I mean of course from the outside, it's hard to see how I break, now I always move my wheel before my break and then you break in a straight line.

"I think the guy in the car knows best. Everyone can have their own opinion, from the outside its easier to judge its what happens."

  10. 'If he says he did nothing wrong, then I will lose a lot of respect for that' - Norrispublished at 16:13 British Summer Time 30 June

It's well known that Lando Norris and Max Verstappen are good friends off the track. On if this will have cause issues between them, he told Sky Sports: "I don't know, it depends what he says, if he says he did nothing wrong, then I will lose a lot of respect for that.

"If he admits to being a bit stupid and running into me and being a bit reckless in a way, then I will lose only a small amount of respect for him. It's a tough one to take when fighting for the win, I was trying to be fair from my side and he just wasn't."

  11. 'He ruined his own race as much as he ruined mine' - Norrispublished at 16:10 British Summer Time 30 June

On Verstappen moving in front of Norris when he was trying to overtake, Norris said to Sky Sports: "It's a rule, you are not allowed to react to the driver and that's what he did three times out of three. Two times I managed to avoid it and the three time he just rode into me. I'm just trying to enjoy my race, he was clearly slower in the end and he ruined his own race as much as he ruined mine. Nothing more I can do, I did my best and it wasn't good enough but not through my own fault.

On what the plan is moving forward, for example, talking to the stewards, he added: "There are rules and if the rules aren't followed there's nothing I can do about that, I just had to do my job and go out and drive, and drive fast, and doing what I did today which isn't good enough for the win.

"I'm just going to carry on with what I'm doing, I'm doing a good job and my efforts, and my improvements from yesterday to today, and onto Silverstone. I'm happy with the team and everything we are doing but I got let down today."

  12. 'A tough one to take' - Norrispublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 30 June

Lando Norris retired from the race after a collision with Max Verstappen for the race win in the closing laps. He told Sky Sports afterwards: "I don't know what to say, I'm disappointed. Nothing more than that honestly. It was a good race, I looked forward to a fair and strong battle, I wouldn't say that wasn't what it was at the end, so a tough one to take. It was a mistake free race from my side, I did a good job."

Mercedes principal Toto Wolff has a giant smile on his face as he chats to Sky Sports. He said the team were happy with third place on pace but he adds: "When they [Verstappen and Norris] started to tangle at front, we thought this could go wrong!"

With the British Grand Prix coming up next week, Wolff says in Lewis Hamilton and George Russell he has "two drivers who love the Silverstone circuit".

Is he wearing his lederhosen underneath his team kit? "Austrians only wear them up in the mountain - this isn't the mountains!" he jokes.

  14. 'We will keep pushing flat out to stay in the fight' - Sainzpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 30 June

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who finished third: “It was about trying to keep up with George, we knew that Mercedes today might have a bit of an advantage on race pace, we tried everything to keep up with him.

“Oscar at the end was coming quick but to get P3 is I think a good result, we can be happy and quite proud of that because the weekend hasn’t been easy for us and to come away with points.”

On stepping up performance ahead of next weekend: “Happy days that there is action up front and see some nice battles. Unfortunately for us, we are still coming off the back of a tough couple of races where we are not quite there to fight for the win yet.

“We are trying to do everything we can to be back on form in Silverstone and the upcoming races to make sure next time we are up there to compete. We will keep pushing flat out to stay in the fight.”

McLaren's Oscar Piastri who finished second at the Austrian Grand Prix: "There's a lot of what ifs and maybes. Obviously, starting from yesterday I know it's only my fourth podium in F1, so close to a win, it hurts. I think second half of the race we were coming on pretty strong, I am happy with another podium, when it's that close you can't help but hurt a bit."

On the British Grand Prix: "It's not my home grand prix but McLaren's, it was a place of good memories from last year. Hopefully we can be at the front. I don't know what happened with Lando and Max. It's our team home race, I'm excited for what is to come."

  16. 'You are always dreaming' - Russellpublished at 15:52 British Summer Time 30 June

George Russell, who secured Mercedes first win of the 2024 season: “Incredible, it was a tough fight out there at the beginning of the race just to hold onto that P3 and I saw on the TV Max and Lando getting pretty hard, I knew Lando would be wanting to get that race win.

“The team have done an amazing job to get us into this fight and you’ve got to be there to pick it up the pieces and that’s where we were.

“I couldn’t believe how close were to Max and Lando, it was a possibility, you are always dreaming but as I said you are so proud to be back on the top step. The team have worked so hard, they’ve made so many strides since the start of the season. The last two races have been incredible so more to come.”

On his second Grand Prix victory: “Absolutely, it’s no secret with Red Bull and Max, and McLaren with Lando are still a little bit out in front. But we are always putting ourselves in that third place position in the last couple of races. If anything happens up front, we will then pick it up. What an exciting time for us.”

On next weekend's British Grand Prix: “We are riding a bit of a wave at the moment, these last three races have been incredible. I think realistically we probably could have won the race in Canada but this makes up for one too many mistakes on my side."
