The rain is getting heavier, and you might wonder why there aren’t any spare wet weather tyres that teams can call upon for conditions such as these. Well, there used to be...

In the past, when Bahrain also hosted the first race of the season, Pirelli would supply what was essentially a free set of intermediates and wets to each team outside of the overall allocation, because if they weren't used then they could be carried over to the race weekend itself. But as the first race this year is in Australia, that wasn't possible because the tyres are dispatched to the events months in advance.

The tyre sets here in Bahrain were released from Pirelli's factory in Romania in December, and so teams had to make their own choices on the tyres they wanted at the end of last year. Only Aston Martin (three sets of intermediates) and Haas (one set of intermediates, one set of full wets) opted to cover off the chance of rain.

Lando Norris is running in the afternoon session on day two so while the McLaren driver waits for his turn in the car, Sky Sports have grabbed him for a quick chat.

"The car was feeling like last year, which is a good start," said Norris.

"We've had our fair share of issues in the past coming to Bahrain, not starting off on the right foot, but things just feel normal, which is a good start.

"A lot of stuff has changed on the car, so for us to just go out and check everything, is a good start to the test. It really doesn't matter if you're first or last on day one, that only matters in Australia.

"You never what fuel loads people are running, engine modes and things like that. For us, it's just checking things and ticking some boxes; the last thing you want is to get to Australia and have some surprises. All good so far."
