Surrey have won the County Championship Division Two title despite drawing their final game against Northants at The Oval.

The 13 points gained were enough to ensure they will go up as champions after rivals Lancashire had to settle for a draw in their game against Essex at Chelmsford.

Surrey were set 215 to win the game, but after Jason Roy hit 77 off 35 balls, a halt was called with their score on 125-5.

"The curtain has come down on a great season for Yorkshire. The champions notched up win number eleven-a record for the championship. With this defeat coupled with the Hampshire win at Notts, Sussex were relegated.

"They were set 309 to win, but were destroyed early doors as pace duo Bresnan and Broioks shared six wickets.

"There was high emotion as the Yorkshire players and crowd paid tribute to Mike Yardy as he came out to bat for the last time in a Sussex shirt before retirement.

"He made 41 to hold up the victory charge and there was also a spirited 47 from Zaidi, but then Rashid mopped up the tail with three wickets as Yorkshire completed victory by 100 runs. Sussex bowled out for 208."

Sussex have been relegated from Division One of the County Championship following a 100-run defeat by champions Yorkshire at Headingley.

Following Hampshire's win against Nottinghamshire earlier in the day, Sussex needed to at least draw their game, but defeat ended their five-year stay in the top flight.

"County Champions Yorkshire are closing in on a record 11th win Championship win of the season after blasting away the Sussex top order.

"Knowing that defeat will consign them to Division Two cricket next season, Sussex haven't shown the necessary resolve so far.

"Hampshire faced an anxious wait to see if their efforts had been enough to preserve their First Division status after defeating Nottinghamshire by eight wickets at Trent Bridge.

"The southern county secured the victory they knew would keep their hopes alive, after chasing down a victory target of 200 on the final day of the County Championship season.

"Openers Jimmy Adams and Michael Carberry had laid the foundation for the win by putting on 89 together on the third evening and after a watchful half hour they took their stand into three figures.

"Adams moved to his 50 from 81 deliveries and Carberry followed shortly afterwards, running Stuart Broad for back-to-back boundaries to the vacant third man area to reach the milestone.

"The opening stand reached 129, at which point Jake Ball struck with two wickets in as many deliveries. Adams chopped on to his stumps after making 70 and then Lions captain James Vince was cleaned up first ball by his fellow squad member.

"Carberry’s half century had arrived in 110 deliveries and he made sure there was no way back into the contest for the hosts as he unleashed a flurry of shots, before scampering a single to mid on to clinch the contest.

"Carberry closed on 84 not out and Will Smith was unbeaten on 34 at the end. The outcome left the victors sweating on news from Headingley, where their survival hopes depended on Sussex losing their match against Yorkshire. Nottinghamshire’s defeat, their first loss in eight matches, confirmed their third place finish in the table."
